Will Lily Tomlin get her own "Desperate Housewives" spin-off?

If you told me yesterday that I'd be getting excited at the possibility of a Desperate Housewives spin-off series, I probably would have wondered what color the sky is on your planet. That, however, was before I heard that it's Wisteria Lane septuagenarian Karen McCluskey (Kathryn Joosten) and her sister Roberta (Lily Tomlin) who are hoping to get their own show.

The spin-off series would reportedly take inspiration from gay-fave sitcom The Golden Girls and have the sisters living with two other women in Miami. So far, Housewives creator Marc Cherry is not involved in the potential spin-off.

I remember being pretty excited when I heard that gay icon Tomlin would be appearing on Desperate Housewives and while she was great, she never got the kind of screen time that would have made her role really memorable. Hopefully, they would get the time to shine in a series of their own and maybe, get to solve more mysteries together.

If such a spin-off were to happen, that does raise the question of who would play Karen and Roberta's roommates. Might I suggest one of my favorite underappreciated older actresses, Amy Hill (best remembered for playing Margaret Cho's grandmother) for one of the roles?

Amy Hill, in and out of her grandma drag

What do you think? Are Karen and Roberta interesting enough to justify a series of their own? Would you watch such a show? Most importantly, who would you like to see as part of a new Golden Girls?

A good idea that won't happen

This will never happen, but I'd love to see Betty White involved as the mother of one of the characters.  Her comic timing is still impeccable.

    Hows about

Cloris Leachman? She maybe a bit too old for it (83), but I'm sure her bawdy humor would be welcome. And she was a show stealer on Dancing with the Stars.

Having Betty White or Rue McClanahan make a guest appearance maybe nice, but not initally since it would seem as too much like a copy of the Golden Girls.

Joan Rivers (75) would be in the right age range and I can see her fill the Blanche role.

    Two others

I have two older elegant ladies I'd love to see take on those rolls.

    Julie Andrews and June Lockhart.

Two of my favorite actresses from years gone by.

    Amy Hill

I love Amy Hill!  She was also hilarious as the butch lesbian in Julie Brown's Comedy Central show Strip Mall

    together

The two of them together on DH was great. I'd love to see Roberta be out.
    Kathy Bates for a roommate..

I could see the two of them

I could see the two of them opening up a Senior Citizen's Detective Agency.  One the my favorites would be Christine Baranski, as perhaps the elegant, but bawdy, daughter of one of them.  What about Pixie Dixie Carter?

    Casting the spin-off

I'm not sure if she'd be up for it, but I'd love to see Carol Burnett tackle a new ensemble scripted comedy/dramedy. Aside from guest roles on Desperate Housewives and Law & Order: Sport Utility Vehicle, I haven't seen her in much lately, but I have a feeling she'd be wonderful working with Tomlin and Joosten.

    I would watch it.
