Mamma Mia! Meryl Streep, Colin Firth and Pierce Brosnan to sing ABBA on the big screen
Get ready for the next Broadway musical to go from stage to the big screen. Mamma Mia!, the incredibly popular musical that uses music from ABBA to tell the story of a bride-to-be trying to figure out the identity of her father, is currently filming. While the idea of Mamma Mia! on the big screen sounds fun, the casting of this movie really makes this exciting. Meryl Streep will be playing Donna, the bride's mother, while Amanda Seyfried (from Big Love and Veronica Mars) plays Sophie, the young woman trying to figure out her paternity. Meanwhile, Pierce Brosnan, Colin Firth and Stellan Skarsgård play Sophie's three daddies. (Firth plays Harry, the British banker who turns out to be gay.) If my memory is correct, only Christine Baranski has another movie musical on her resume. You can get a taste of Streep's singing voice on A Prairie Home Companion, where she sings "Goodbye to My Mama" with Lily Tomlin. Colin Firth, meanwhile, recorded a song with Rupert Everett on the soundtrack for The Importance of Being Earnest. Mama Mia! hopes to hit theatres in November 2008.
