Wanda Sykes, "Noah's Arc" and "Greek" among the NAACP Image Award nominees
The nominees for the 40th Annua NCAAP Image Awards were announced this week and the nominees include out comedienne Wanda Sykes (The New Adventures of Old Christine), Project Runway (where Jerell was the last gay standing this season), Noah's Arc: Jumping the Broom and as gay author E. Lynn Harris. The acting categories include nominations for actors in gay roles such as Greek's Paul James, The Wire's Michael Kenneth Williams and In Treatment's Blair Underwood (who is also nominated for his performances in The New Adventures of Old Christine and Dirty Sexy Money). Gay inclusive network ABC got the most nominations, with Ugly Betty falling behind only Tyler Perry's House of Payne in the nomination count. octobercountry (1368 points) (311 posts) on Fri, 2009-01-09 17:13.Well, there was that episode with the gay monkeys... heh, heh... I'm still very disappointed that the show was dropped; I really enjoyed that one, and think that if it had gone on a bit longer that surely some gay characters would have been introduced. I'm like a superhero, with no powers or motivation... Yeah, the chimps -- but thatSubmitted by

giovannif7 (1699 points) (358 posts) on Fri, 2009-01-09 18:04.Does the fact that Victor Garber is in the cast of Eli Stone count? He's the main reason I watch the show.
He's great, but he's not openly gaySubmitted by

Sonja SohnSubmitted by
DaisyViolet (319 points) (64 posts) on Fri, 2009-01-09 14:54.I hate to be 'that person' but I have to point out that Sonja Sohn from The Wire plays Kima Griggs, most definitely a lesbian, so more than 'gay-adjacent'. Though she was wonderfully adjacent to some foxxy ladies, so I guess in that sense it does work...

octobercountry (1368 points) (311 posts) on Sat, 2009-01-10 02:50.Which LMA book did your quote come from? (Sorry, this was directed to DaisyViolet, if I wasn't clear...) Which reminds me... did they ever talk about her over on AfterEllen? Surely LMA was gay... I'm like a superhero, with no powers or motivation... Great NewsSubmitted by
Richard (45 points) (9 posts) on Fri, 2009-01-09 15:44.I'm glad there's so many gay characters and actors being nominated for the NCAAP Image Awards. I've always been a huge fan of Wanda Sykes, so it's cool she's being embraced and not shunned by anyone. Here's another example that being gay/lesbian in Hollywood isn't going to ruin a star's career. fingers crossedSubmitted by

It's the NAACP not the NCAAP!Submitted by
Hephaestion (385 points) (89 posts) on Sat, 2009-01-10 19:17.I'm a little shocked that no one has commented that the wrong name of this award is given in the article above. It is the NAACP, not the NCAAP. Julian Bond, a hero to many of us, just stepped down as president of the NAACP. and he has been very pro-gay, including for gay marriage equality. I see him from time to time here in DC and he is as nice and as smart as they come. Thanks for the catch! Fixed now.Submitted by

How ironic! Me brought up by the KKK liking this postSubmitted by
Richard Ashcraft (330 points) (65 posts) on Sun, 2009-01-11 16:04.Finally a post on Afterelton.com that doesn't seem obsessed with sex and has some very intelligent and witty responses. All the more ironic is that I was brought up by the KKK and do not consider black men sexy in the least, despite my now more liberal views. But wouldn't it be more PC for the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People to use the name National Association for the Advancement of African-Americans. NAAAA! Ah, PC! The scourge of truth-tellers everywhere. Reply to OctoberCountrySubmitted by

Sorry so slow with this, I don't get online much on the weekend!! The LMA quote is from Little Women~ crusty old Aunt May says this about Jo, who was very dykey, no doubt, but I think LMA herself was straight, or at least forever unable to come out, maybe even to herself. I dunno if they've ever discussed her on AfterEllen~ I much prefer it over here with the boys (far fewer discussions of awesome new folksingers zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz) She is too fond of books, and it has turned her brain~ Louisa May Alcott Thanks for theSubmitted by
octobercountry (1368 points) (311 posts) on Mon, 2009-01-12 22:03.Thanks for the information---guess it's been a while since I've read Little Women, or I would have remembered that! I don't know... From her journal entries that I've read, etc., I did get the impression that LMA's natural orientation was toward being a lesbian. I don't know that she ever explored those feelings in any way, but at the same time she also apparently had zero interest in men. But, who can say at this late date; I don't think concrete evidence is really there, so it is all supposition. (This, as compared to someone like children's author Noel Streatfeild, whose attraction toward women seems well documented.) Alcott's work is sentimental in the extreme, typical of the mid-to-late Victorian time period from which it dates, but I still do enjoy pulling her books off the shelf every once in a while for a re-read. At least her novels are not quite of the truly gag-inducing variety of sentimentality present in an Elsie Dinsmore! Hey, nice to see visitors from AfterEllen over here! I have to confess, I've almost never visited that site. I imagine that it is full of women talking about their feelings and things like that, and as you know guys don't do that sort of thing. Ha! I'm like a superhero, with no powers or motivation... |
