New "Melrose Place'" characters announced: Can you imagine a "new Matt" that isn't gay?

Scoopmeister Michael Ausiello has some news about the new bunch of residents at Melrose Place and it's hard to miss that there's no mention of the "new Matt", Auggie, being gay. Instead, he's merely described thusly: "A hunky hippie, this recovering alcoholic is willing to give everybody the benefit of the doubt."

Now, I could give the new Melrose producers the benefit of the doubt...

Perhaps they see Matt's defining characteristic as the easygoing nature that earned him the nickname "doorMatt". I may primarily remember Matt as one of the few gay characters on TV at the time, but it's fine if they see him differently. However, all other new Melrose Place guys sound pretty heterosexual and a return to Melrose would be missing something if they didn't include a gay man.

Matt or no, there'll be some gay representation in this redux: the "new Amanda", Ella, is described as "omnisexual" and occasionally has sex with David, the son of original Melrose resident Jake Hanson. So I'll be surprised if there's more to Ella than talking about saucy girl-on-girl action while only having serious relationships with men.

What do you think? If they are losing a gay central character, does this change any interest you might have had in the new Melrose Place?
