Out Australian singer Anthony Callea keeps going strong

We've written a little about Anthony Callea, the Australian Idol runner-up who came out this past March, but we haven't followed his career closely. Now thanks to RJ, we've got a little closer look at his current career for you.

Callea's been quite busy since coming out. Right now he's getting ready to perform in an opera, Dead Man Walking, based on the book by Sister Helen Prejean (which also inspired the Susan Sarandon/Sean Penn movie.) After that he's scheduled to take on the role of Mark in a Perth production of Rent. Wow, can you imagine any of American Idol's final two performing in an opera?

Callea was also the runner up in It Takes Two, which sounds like an Australian version of the Celebrity Duets show Fox aired last season. Callea and his partner, radio host Jo Stanley, placed second in the competition. They got that far performing of hits like "Shake Your Groove Thing", "S.O.S." and "Call Me."

    My Idol

Swoon. He is so sexy.  He would crush the competition on American Idol, no doubt.

    I agree...

I've been a fan of Anthony since his first album came out almost 2 years ago. i had to send to Australia to get that one as at the time, nobody carried it here in the US. I have is second album which I like even better than the first. And as Evan said, he's SEXY!!! If he ever breaks up with Paul, I'll fly to Melbourne and take his place! :)

I'm a much more recent fan...

...since seeing him on It Takes Two, via YouTube. It's hard to believe it's been 3 years since he was runner-up on Australian Idol (which he should have won, btw). The record label is sure taking its sweet time to decide to promote him outside Australia. Good thing he has such great fans on his forum helping to spread the word. Where would we be without the internet, huh?

    Always a fan

It was actually his performance of "The Prayer" that got him so far through the show. The first time he performed "The Prayer" I heard he was not well but still did such a challenging song.

My partner and I saw him recently in a live performance, both he and his support act did a brilliant show.
