Pat Boone: Some of Donny Osmond's best friends are terrorists
In an apparent bid to join the Sally Kern club, Pat Boone recently compared Proposition 8 protests to the recent terrorist attacks in Mumbai: "What troubles me so deeply, and should trouble all thinking Americans, is that there is a real, unbroken line between the jihadist savagery in Mumbai and the hedonistic, irresponsible, blindly selfish goals and tactics of our homegrown sexual jihadists. Hate is hate, no matter where it erupts. And by its very nature, if it's not held in check, it will escalate into acts vile, violent and destructive." You might recall that Boone recorded a homophobic robocall for a Republican Governor in Kentucky late last year. Sexual jihadists? Did I blink when the gay war against heterosexuality was declared? I thought marriage equality was about gaining the ability to take care of our partners with as much help as opposite-sex spouses get from the government. I guess I was wrong about that. Or maybe Boone is speaking about an issue he does not understand at all. Boone isn't the only celebrity commenting on equal marriage rights, however. Read about Donny Osmond's recent comments (and more about Boone's crazy logic) after the break. Boone brings up plenty of crazy in his attempts to justify his conclusion: "Oh, I know the homosexual "rights" demonstrations haven't reached the same level of violence, but I'm referring to the anger, the vehemence, the total disregard for law and order and the supposed rights of their fellow citizens. I'm referring to the intolerance, the hate seething in the words, faces and actions of those who didn't get their way in a democratic election, and who proclaim loudly that they will get their way, no matter what the electorate wants!" Isn't it cute how he uses quotes to marginalize things like making sure the person you love has health care? Well, see here's how he sees the whole issue (emphasis Boone's): "Every homosexual citizen has the same, identical rights as any other American. The Constitution says nothing about marriage, and shouldn't. Marriage is not a governmental creation; it is a time honored and biblically ordained institution that is subject not to the government but to the will of the people."
Donny Osmond in an Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat Donny Osmond has also posted a comment about gay marriage, prompted by a fan's question. Osmond makes the "some of my best friends are gay" excuse, even saying those very words, without any sense of parody. "There are many gay individuals that are members of our church. I know many of them. In fact, some of my best friends are gay. You ask how I react regarding their marriages. Well, I do support our Church leaders who say that we can accept those with gay tendencies in our church as long as they do not act upon their temptations. Everyone has tenancies to succumb to temptation, but we all have the same standard given to us by our Father in Heaven. Whether we may be tempted to be immoral with members of our own sex or of the opposite sex, we are expected to live chaste lives." So basically, he's saying he knows gay people and doesn't treat them badly personally but he believes they should have less rights than others. Boone's column earned him the silver medal as Keith Olbermann's "Worst Person in the World" last night. Osmond, meanwhile, hopefully has some heartfelt conversations to face with some of those gay friends. Submitted by on Tue, 2008-12-09 15:54. |

Pat Boone????
He's still alive? Damn. Oops, there I go with my violent, sexual-jihadist terrorist tendencies again
Carl
OH...WOW
donny osmond. i didn't know he had such views. gay tendencies? WTF
hmmm....
Nice to know that we, Americans who happen to be gay, are now jihadists trying to force our opinions on others. It just makes me just shake my head sometimes when people who appear to me good-hearted spew venom like a fountain at times.
insanity is nothing new for PAT BOONE
Ah, yes...
I, For One, Am Fed Up With the Crap!
This game of "Who are the REAL haters and bigots" that people like Boone insist on playing.
Let's suppose that a church decides to put up a big ol' "NO FAGS ALLOWED" sign on its door. Well, as appalling as it is, we'd have to respect their right to exclude whoever they wanted. Who'd want to belong to a church that doesn't weed out its undesirables?
But let's suppose this same church decides that EVERY other public place should carry that same sign? And let's suppose the state decided to put this idea up to a vote? And through a dishonest ad campaign, and with no coherent explanation for WHY such a sign should be displayed at all times, this proposed idea became law?
Because that's exactly what proposition 8 was: A giant "NO FAGS ALLOWED" sign, written into law.
And Boone and other wackadoodle homobigots are shocked, SHOCKED, I tell you! that we're pissed.
There was no reason why "traditional" married couples couldn't peacefully co-exist with legally married gay couples. None. The perceived threat was purely imaginary.
Supporters of Prop 8 saw a group of people getting something which they felt that group of people didn't deserve. That was it, pure and simple. It was motivated by nothing more, and nothing less, than a hostility towards GLBT people.
I really would like to know: What, exactly, was our response to this SUPPOSED to be?
The only people stupider than the ones who say, "If you were really tolerant, you'd be tolerant of my intolerance' are the ones who say, "Your reaction to my bigotry confirms that I was right to be a bigot."
The "real haters and bigots" are the same frakkin' people they always were. It's just that the targets of their bigotry got fed up with it.
(Whew. I'm not usually this long-winded. I need a break. Now...)
I'm sure I left something out of this rant. Hopefully someone else can add to it.
I always thought...
...Donny Osmond had gay tendencies. Musical Theatre, rhinestone studded Elvis suits....he dressed in drag one halloween as (get this) Marie....just saying....
Notice how he says "we may be tempted to be immoral with members of our own sex..." I can imagine he's been fighting his own tendencies his whole life. Can there be anything tackier than saying you are best friends with members of the group of people that you think are sinners and shouldn't have the same rights as you? When is his glass wall going to shatter? And it really sucks that I know that today is his birthday. He's 51.
And I second it...Pat Boone is still alive???
I say we take the warning labels off everything and let nature take it's course.
Hey, Marie's been divorced,
Yeah, I am pretty sure...
...she's gone through 3 by now. I don't imagine the church gives her too much grief because of the amount of tith they get from her. They do like their celebrities...
I say we take the warning labels off everything and let nature take it's course.
Do they believe in the Bible?
.
Yes but when Society turned
Yes but when Society turned against them about it one of their Prophets had a "Revelation" and they stopped doing it, which led to the splitting off of FLDS which still practise Polygamy, along with White Supremacy. LDS dropped the fact they considered Black people unpure with another "Revelation" from one of their Prophets. They also had little problem with Lesbianism till the 50's.
I can actually think of several Non-LDS (Or FLDS) Mormons who were No on 8 though, like that Baseball player and his wife, or Chelsea Handler's Mother. And wasn't there an openly Gay and Monogamous Mormon on Survivor called Rafe a few years ago, whose family supported him? I'll have to look into non-LDS Mormons. I'm Irish and we don't have the Religion here, but Prop 8 led me to become interested in it. It certainly makes that South Park episode more enjoyable :)
"In spite of language, in spite of intelligence and intuition and sympathy, one can never really communicate anything to anybody"-Aldous Huxley
Alternately...
A Mormon student in one of my college history classes challenged this when a professor told us about the revelation about polygamy. According to her, the church's position still believed in polygamy but believed that peacefully bowing to the laws of man was what God wanted more (with an eye on changing the laws of man). I have no idea if that's a new bit of spin or if she was speaking for some alternate group of Mormons.
Polygamy
Polygamist Elitism
But even early in the history of the Mormons, polygamy was generally reserved for higher ranking men in the church and discouraged for average members. Joseph Smith and Bringham Young both practiced mass-polygamy while publicly trying to restrain the practice by others.
This corresponds to a certain sort of elitism. Since polygamy supposed leads to a higher level of salvation, it was a perk for higher-ranking men. This still holds true in the splinter sects that practice polygamy (in defiance of the law) today. It is very common in polygamist communities for late-teens boys and young men to be driven out of the communities because they are perceived as competition for the women. Obviously there aren't enough women available for every man to have multiple wives, so many men will inevitably be disenfranchised by the system. In a rather Darwinian system, older, higher-status men try to horde the available women for themselves.
The girls of course have to be raised to accept the idea of sharing husbands with other women. There may be some advantages (he's not there to boss her around all the time) but there are also many disadvantages.
This is all consistent with life in the ancient world though, and this is all based on Old Testament fundamentalism. Of course, in those days polygamy was all about status. A man who could afford to have multiple wives (and the resulting children) was visibly more prosperous than a man who could afford only one, or couldn't even afford that. Wars were often motivated by a desire to increase the available pool of women (and reduce the pool of men) to allow for more wives.

Am I mis-reading his quote?
In some ways this means we're making progress
I went to a display of photos from the civil rights era and one thing that stuck in my mind is that although these people were steadfastly non violent, their opponents' smears and accusations got ever more vehement in direct proportion to the success of the movement. Here's hoping it's the same for us and that they fear our growing power and dedication because they know in their hearts they are on the side of prejudice and hate.
Nous Sommes Tous Sauvages.
Homos vs Heteros (Friend or foe)
It all comes down to just going to war and having war-type tactics to back us up. It seems that our peace and love tactics and getting our fair share of the All-American pie, got lost either in some serious L.A. traffic or just in our gay translation, that might have equal something way beyond our needs or means.
I feel that it's now time to just be our trueselves, you know the kind of people that want to-turn-the-entire-world-gay-with-us-selves. Even though that is far from the truth, that is what many of our heterosexual peers feel about us. It seems that we are always pushing and forcing our gay agendas down everyone's throat. Even though I know it's far from the truth but it seems that many of the people that we have worked with, live in the same neighborhoods with and basically share the same hopes and dreams with feel that we have this need to spread our gay thinking and our gay logic by simply asking for just a spec of what it feels like to be an 'alleged' hetrosexual.
My conscious can no longer allow, alleged heterosexuals to get away with jumping the fence, from time to time, especially with lame excuses such as, being gay for experimental purposes. An even better one is the whole being on drugs and alcohol excuse. It seems early on, I realized that you don't have to be gay to have gay sex because I was noticing that several straight people were having more gay sex, than I could ever have or imagining having. You have to remember that everyone that claims to be straight or heterosexual aren't. It's just seems a tad easier to comply to the traditions that was set before you and so on.
It never dawned on most people that have problems with gay people, that we are just being our true selves by wanting marital status, that is equal as that as our heterosexual counterparts, whether they are faking it or not, we want that right to be able to go to Vegas on a whim and marry are best friend for kicks. To later have the entire thing annulled within a few hours and even minutes. Everyone should have the right to be as miserable as many so-called-heterosexual-legally-married-couples are or pretend to be in public or for the cameras.
Being single, I have the luxury of really evaluating several couples around me and it seems most of the straight married couples are so truly unhappy. I'm actually in the middle of a divorce, yes that of my very straight brother and his soon-to-be 'exe' wife. It seems that both of them are the least people that would argue that gay men and women should be able to marry and divorce because from day one, they took those vows for granite and basically made a mockery of marriage.
Even though, I don't plan on getting married anytime soon, I just would love to know that if Mr. Right came along, I could legally marry him and have our nupitals recognized and treated like that of my miserable straight counterparts.
To even mention Pat Boone and Donnie Osmond in the same article brings to mind so much nostaglia for me. Instantly, I think of a damn stork delivering a baby down a chimmel and a mother in an apron and dad with a tin lunch box coming home from work. Pat B. who is a very tiny man and you know what they say about tiny men and their BIG ideals, just think Hilter, Napolean and so on. It seems Mr. Boone is viewed as a symbol of America and ranks up there with Apple Pie and the American Flag. It seems his bigot views shouldn't surprise anyone but believe it or not, I wouldn't expect anything less from him. I wasn't in open-mouth shock when I read that he compared gay people and terrorism because from day one he built a career on family-values and anything good and holy. Even though he built a career on covering popular songs, he wasn't a fan of secular music and even called it the 'devil music' at one time and spoke out about it. Speaking of pop music, it seems that Donnie O and his clan were considered the All-American family, so to have these two Pat B and Donnie O very red, and very white and very blue patronic symbols of America on display, is fitting but enough to make me throw up a bit in my mouth. All I have to say is the fact, that both men have been around more gay men and women than they would ever imagine, being a part of the gayest industry in the world, Show Business. I can't imagine Donnie's career being as big as it was without the aid of gay men and sexually confused women. I'm pretty sure he has more than just 'gay friends', (wink, wink) because he is a bit too comfortable with his drone-like sexuality, that still in his late 40's earlier 50's he flaunts.
There isn't a Friday or Saturday night in any city, any gay bar in America, without a guy that favors Donnie O. You know the type, super preppy and outgoing, the biggest and whitest teeth you have ever seen and no matter how old they get, they still have this boyish charm, that makes you pay attention. Pat B. on the other hand is the creepy short guy that you wish would go away but still, if he wasn't so creepier you might give him a shot or at least a second look because in Pat B. younger days he wasn't bad too look at, just annoying with his 'goodie two shoes' attitude. I think most people just sat waiting for some kind of scandal to come his way or out of his goodie two shoes closet.

Come on, give Donnie a break. He's just looking after his fan base. He can't help it if they're a bunch of raving lunatics. Or maybe he's still emotionally crippled by having sat one too many times on Paul Lynde's lap at all of those ABC Christmas parites in the '70s. As for Pat Boone, didn't we just establish that he played a man who turned into a woman in "Goodbye Charlie"? What does his church have to say about sex change operations? On a positive note, he did play Pastor David Wilkinson in "The Cross and the Switchblade" (not to be confused with "The Crotch and the Switch Hitter," which is due out on DVD this Christmas, and which, I believe, also co-stars Erik Estrada). Wilkinson's the Divine (insert your own joke here) who had a vision of America in a worldwide recession and at the mercy of ruthless homosexuals and environmentalists. Of course he had this "vision" in 1973, but still, he saw it coming long before George Bush!

And speaking of hot air, Camille Paglia is weighing in on Proposition 8 at Salon.com. Here's a sample of the drivel of the day:
"In their displeasure at the California vote, gay activists have fomented animosity among African-Americans who voted for Proposition 8 and who reject any equivalence between racism and homophobia. Do gays really want to split the Democratic coalition? I completely agree with a hard-hitting piece by the British gay activist Mark Simpson (which was forwarded to me by Glenn Belverio), "Let's Be Civil: Marriage Isn't the End of the Rainbow." Simpson, who has been called "a skinhead Oscar Wilde," is famous among other things for a riveting 2002 Salon article that put the term "metrosexual" into world circulation. I appreciate Simpson's candor about how marriage is a very poor fit with the actual open lifestyle of so many gay men, which is far more radical. Marriage may be desirable for some gay men and women, but at what cost? Activists should have focused instead on removing all impediments to equality in civil unions -- such as the unjust denial of Social Security benefits to the surviving partner in gay relationships."
At least she ends on a positive note. Then, without blinking, she goes on to pay a loving tribute to such gay icons as Dusty Springfield, Barbra Streisand, and Judy Garland. It just goes to show how scattershot and scatterbrained her increasingly unreadable column has become.
Camille Paglia is an annoying, pretentious twit.
My Question is This:
Why are these two still in show business?
