Queer Black Cinema offers a monthly chance to support Black LGBT filmmakers

Finding gay stories in entertainment is tough, but the picture continues to improve (thanks mostly to cable and reality TV). If you're a gay person of color, however, finding yourself reflected in movies and television is even more challenging.

If you're in the New York area, there's a promising resource in Queer Black Cinema, a monthly film series that showcases work by Black LGBTQ filmmakers. QBC not only screens films but also offers a way to learn more about films that depict queer Black stories. The most effective way to encourage stories that don't get told often enough is to commercially support those stories when they do get told; a regular event like QBC makes it easier to give that kind of support by helping get the word out on what's out there. Our sister site offered a more thorough look at the organization last year.

QBC's film series events happen once during every fourth week of the months at the LGBT Community Center. The group is also hosting a Pride benefit on June 17, featuring the premier of Christopher Street (Christopher Street was part of our Gay Teen Guide to Summer Fun) along with music performances. Christopher Street gets an encore screening on June 21 that will include a Q&A with series creator Dwight O'Neal.
