News, Reviews & Commentary on Gay and Bisexual Men in Entertainment and the Media

Queerview television guide for the weekend of November 30

Friday

My Night at the Grammys (CBS) 8:00 PM EST
Fans of the Grammys might want to check out this collection of memorable performances from The Grammy Awards, including Elton John's duet with Eminem.

This Film is Not Yet Rated (IFC) 10:00 PM EST
Last summer, Kirby Dick gave filmmakers a chance to challenge the Motion Picture Association of America and the way it rates films with this documentary that asked if the MPAA holds films to the same standards. Kirby made a case that the agency censors gay content more harshly than similar opposite-sex scenes.

Saturday

Saturday is World AIDS Day and cable networks like Sundance, Logo and Showtime are observing the day with plenty of content that explores the way AIDS has affected peoples' lives. There's more to be found, so make sure to check TV schedules.

AIDS-themed movies on Logo
Logo has a selection of films dealing with AIDS today including Longtime Companion at 10:30 AM EST, It's My Party at 12:30 PM EST, Behind the Red Door at 3:30 PM EST, In the Gloaming at 5:30 PM EST and Jeffrey at 7:00 PM EST.

The Ride: Seven Days to End AIDS Marathon (Logo) starting at 7:30 AM EST
Logo revisits two-and-a-half hours of this docu-series following a group of cyclists participating in a 585 mile AIDS/Lifecycle race.

Stephen Fry: HIV & Me (Sundance Channel) 2:00 PM EST
In a two-part documentary, Stephen Fry explores current attitudes towards AIDS and HIV. Fry asks why attitudes towards HIV have become apathetic, talking with a teen who lives openly with HIV. He also visits San Francisco to talk with Armstead Maupin about the AIDS crisis in San Francisco and visits a rural clinic in Africa.

Beat the Drum (Showtime) 3:00 PM EST
This 2003 drama examines various ways AIDS is affecting South Africa through the eyes of a young orphan who leaves his AIDS-ravaged village to encounter a wealthy lawyer and a truck driver who also have the disease.

3 Needles (Sho Too) 9:00 PM EST
The lives of three people affected by AIDS intertwine in this drama that has a pretty impressive cast including Chloe Sevigny, Shawn Ashmore, Stockard Channing, Lucy Liu, Sandra Oh and Olympia Dukakis.

Torchwood (BBC America) 9:00 PM EST
Tonight's season finale comes from the same writer as "Day One", Cyberwoman" and "Countrycide", which might be a warning to some or a promising sign to others. Me, I'm going to spend the next few weeks I don't find myself wondering who the new character Freema Agyeman is playing when season two debuts on January 28.

The Graham Norton Show (BBC America) 10:00 PM EST
Oh, I'm sure this will be interesting -- this week Graham is chatting with the original Dukes of Hazard gang.

Sunday

Desperate Housewives (ABC) 9:00 PM EST
Yep, "Something's Coming" is finally here. Who will survive a tornado hitting Wisteria Lane? At this point, for me, there just can't be enough victims, too many of them annoy me silly.

Tin Man (Sci-Fi Channel) 9:00 PM EST
The Sci-Fi Channel's new telling of The Wizard of Oz debuts tonight with Alan Cumming as this re-imagined O.Z.'s version of the scarecrow. (I'm also looking forward to seeing Kathleen Robertson -- recently from IFC's The Business -- looking fabulously wicked as Azkadelia.) Check out a preview of the mini-series after the break.

American Dad (Fox) 9:30 PM EST
Francine becomes a surrogate mom for gay neighbors Terry and Greg, enraging Stan to the point of kidnapping the baby and taking it to a state where gay couples have no family protections.

Brothers & Sisters (ABC) 10:00 PM EST
Ken Olin, Danny Glover and Chevy Chase guest star for Kitty and Robert's wedding. This looks to be the last new episode until next year, so be sure to get your fill of Kevin and Scotty.

24th Day (Logo) 10:00 PM EST
AfterElton Hot 100 pick James Marsden is held hostage by a former trick (Scott Speedman) seeking the ex-lover who might have put him in contact with HIV.

Comedy Central's Last Laugh '07 (Comedy Central) 10:00 PM EST
It's time for Comedy Central's annual look back at the past year. As usual, the gay friendly Lewis Black is a part of the show -- I'm expecting an appropriately hilarious rant about Larry Craig from the constantly-exasperated comedian.

    Wish I could watch

Stephen Fry's "HIV & Me", maybe it will hit the video stores eventually. Recent news report from Canada indicated that the number of new cases of HIV in gay males seems to be rising in North America, a very disheartening statistic that does not show the gay community in the best of light. Hopefully increased awareness among gay youth through education efforts will reverse this trend (the increasing use of recreational drugs is not helping the situation though). Cheers JBE

    FREEMA AGYEMAN on TORCHWOOD

Most of us fans of DOCTOR WHO and TORCHWOOD have known for months that Freema Agyeman will appear in three episodes of the new TORCHWOOD series as Martha Jones, the same character she played on DOCTOR WHO. Months later she will return to the TARDIS on DOCTOR WHO. Rumor has it that Rose's return for the last three episodes of the DOCTOR WHO season will be part of a grand finale that will also feature Captain Jack Harkness, Sarah Jane Smith, and K-9. All of them are purported to be joining forces to battle Davros--creator of the Daleks. No confirmation from BBC or the show's producers; so for now this is just a rumor.

    I've complained about the

I've complained about the Captain Jack of Torchwood missing most of the qualities I adored about the character on Doctor Who -- and the contrast was hard to miss stateside when the "Sound of Drums" three-parter was airing at the same time as Torchwood. I know that it's Martha Jones who'll be appearing on Torchwood next season, I'm just really, really hoping that when Martha appears on Torchwood she doesn't lack the qualities that make her such a great character.

I get the feeling we're headed for a grand RTD finale as well, which is exciting for the grandness of it all (tho' I'd love to see Mikey return with Rose) but I'm enjoying RTD's Doctor Who so much, a part of me dreads it changing in any way.
