News, Reviews & Commentary on Gay and Bisexual Men in Entertainment and the Media

Queerview television guide for October 9

The Martha Stewart Show (Syndicated) Check local listings
Attention Mad Men fans! Today out actor Bryan Batt stops by to talk up his critically praised show and cook up some recipes from the 60s. Sounds like a good inspiration for a classic cocktail party.

Ugly Betty (ABC) 8:00 PM EDT
After last week's cliffhanger, I should be getting excited about the potential of a soap mystery ... but I wonder if we've been spoiled by this season's cast changes. (Hopefully, the Betty writers will pull a curve ball.) And if the question of who has pushy hands at the top of the stairs disappoints, at least there's the promise of Coach Diaz (Eddie Cibrian) in the shower.

Survivor (CBS) 8:00 PM EDT
Yikes! This week sees a tribal shuffle, one based on how people ranked the importance of fellow tribe members. What does that mean for the budding bromance of Charlie and Marcus? Will it throw a wrench in the most compelling aspect of the season thus far?

The cast of Kath & Kim

Kath & Kim (NBC) 8:30 PM EDT
Taking its cues from an Australian sitcom with a gay following, Kath & Kim combines Selma Blair and Molly Shannon as a mother and daughter with terrible taste, poor decision-making skills and ... uhm, unorthodox priorities. While tonight's premiere isn't perfect, I can see potential in this one. Besides, Mikey Day is just adorable as Kim's dim-but-dedicated husband. Will Kath & Kim make good companions for the similarly taste-challenged gang from Camden?

ER (NBC) 10:00 PM EDT
When I heard that Dr. Pratt (Mekhi Phifer) had died in the season premiere, I figured that'd be the last we'll hear about his gay brother, Chaz (Sam Jones III), but I've been hearing rumblings that we'll be seeing a decent amount of Chaz in the upcoming weeks. Fingers crossed we see more of Chaz this season than we have in the past.

Jason O'Mara as Life on Mars' Sam Tyler

Life on Mars (ABC) 10:00 PM EDT
Speaking of remakes, here's one adaption that went from looking disastrous to promising. Mars follows Sam Tyler a police detective who finds himself transported from 2008 to 1973, a time that feels like a completely different world. The original series had its moments of gay inclusiveness and it'll be interesting if ABC's version also explores how gay culture changed radically in the 70s.

The Sarah Silverman Program (Comedy Central) 10:30 PM ED
Silverman's two-night season premiere continues tonight (the show regularly will air on Thursdays) with Sarah trying to sue the entire nation of Mongolia as Steve finds a surprising audience for his short films.

The Tonight Show with Jay Leno
Who could possibly get me to recommend Leno's stale (and more than occasionally gay-baiting) humor? None other than MSNBC anchor Rachel Maddow. The woman who made me kinda like Pat Buchanan is probably one of the few people who could make Leno tolerable for me, though there's plenty of opportunity for Jay to say something totally cringe-inducing.
