News, Reviews & Commentary on Gay and Bisexual Men in Entertainment and the Media

Queerview television guide for July 17

This is one of the gayest weeks for talk shows, with Hairspray and Chuck and Larry opening in movie theatres this weekend.

Live with Regis and Kelly (Syndicated) Check Local Listings
Today (NBC) 7:00 AM EDT
Good Morning America 7:00 AM EDT
The Daily Show with Jon Stewart
Hairspray hype continues today with John Travolta appearing on Good Morning America and Live with Regis and Kelly. Michelle Pfeiffer stops by Today while Christopher Walken talks with Jon Stewart.

The View (ABC) 11:00 AM EDT
Kristen Chenoweth visits the View couch today. Chenoweth's always fabulous but I've got my hopes up that she'll be talking her new show, Pushing Daisies. Daisies is the show I am dying to see because it comes from the mind of out creator Bryan Fuller.

Absolute Wilson (Cinemax) 6:30 PM EDT
Cinemax takes a look at avant-garde director and stage artist, Robert Wilson in this documentary. Wilson, best known for collaborating with Philip Glass on Einstein on the Beach, has a reputation of pushing what theatre can be. Absolute Wilson includes interviews with David Byrne, Philip Glass and one of the last interviews with Susan Sontag.

Without Prejudice (GSN) 9:00 PM EDT
GSN's latest series is a mix between reality TV and game show, where five people pass judgments on strangers, letting their prejudices come out. I didn't see any gay contestants in the preview clip, but the series' producers has worked with a variety of anti-discrimination groups, including GLAAD.

Rick & Steve The Happiest Gay Couple in All the World (Logo) 10:00 PM EDT
The second episode has Rick and Steve participating in each other's lives more, with Steve visiting a Gay Men-za meeting and Rick joining a monster truck rally. Meanwhile, Kirsten and Diana practice caring for a baby when some friends take a vacation. However, nerds should beware -- this episode contains a fiendish trap to out your true nerdiness to whomever you watch TV with. You'll recognize the trap, just remember not to laugh at this incredibly nerdy line until it is explained to the rest of the audience. It's too late for me, but save yourselves!

Kathy Griffin: My Life on the D-List (Bravo) 10:00 PM EDT
Kathy heads overseas in tonight's episode where she makes an appearance on Graham Norton's show, to promote the DVD release of My Life on the D-List in the UK. I can't wait to see what happens when these two irrepressible personalities meet.

The Late Show with David Letterman (CBS) 11:35 PM EDT
Late Night with Conan O'Brien (NBC) 12:30 AM EDT
If you feel up for some discussion on I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry Adam Sandler is scheduled to talk with David Letterman and Jessica Biel will be visiting Conan's couch.

    Kristen Chenoweth

has been named to play Dusty Springfield in a biopic.   I haven't heard anything more in a few months so it will be interesting to see if she mentions it.  Love Dusty!

    Watching TV

I watched Without Prejudice and was thoroughly disappointed.  The show runs 90 minutes long and is very slow.  It was boring yet there is a lot to talk about.  I'll concentrate on Michael, the young black closeted contestant.  Michael is a struggling fashion designer that makes $19,000 a year, travels around the world with an evangelical group and helps children in South America.  Where is the money coming from for him to travel around the world and do the things that he does?   He owns a clothing company by the way.

One of the women panelist pretty quickly suspected he was gay.  So did I.  She was saying things I was thinking until she became crazed about gun rights.  When Michael said he didn't believe people should own guns because his father was killed she went off.  It was surprising since she seemed normal.

Michael is the third closeted black man (Stephen, Real World Denver and Dr. Boogie, Shear Genius) I've seen on reality TV this year.  It seems that when gay men want to hide their sexual orientation that they subconsciously behave in a way that draws attention to their orientation.  All three are super religious in an effort to wash away their homosexuality.  This is very common for gay men that have low self-esteem.  During the Catholic sex abuse scandal several years ago a former priest said that 1/3 to ½ of Catholic seminaries are populated by gay men and women.  This is a long-standing problem dating back at least 800 years in Christian denominations.  I have no idea why people still believe in superstition.  Michael and Dr. Boogie (Stephen never said what he did) work in industries that are gay-friendly.  They all act in an effeminate manner.  Stephen on the first episode of the Real World was seen unpacking and folding his clothes the entire episode.  Dr. Boogie was a walking stereotype of gay men; lisp, tart retorts and all.  Michael when a pretend contestant stole money he called his friend on his cell phone to talk about it and acts very shy and easily wounded. The final three contestants were placed in a pretend situation of what they might do if someone stole money.

The producers brought in a pretend contestant to steal the money.  All three told a production person that this fake contestant stole money.  During the time when the fake contestant left the room and when the production person came back in the room Michael and Marline called their friends to talk about it.  Immediately all three male panelists called Michael out on that saying it was not something a man would do and to handle the problem on his own.  It pissed me off that Michael and Marline called someone.  It wasn’t a life altering decision.  The situation shows how weak Americans are that they have to call someone because of a trivial yet common dilemma.

One of the panelists, a Latino guy, was overt in his racism.  He didn’t like anyone that wasn’t Latino.  This Latino man had tan skin.  He was very clear that he didn’t like black people and to a lesser extent white people.  What’s strange about that is Marline is white and Hispanic.  Hispanic is term to describe people that speak Spanish.  He kept her in because she was Hispanic.  If Michael had a Spanish name like Miguel Hernandez would he have thought differently about him?

Michael ended up winning.  I’ll watch Without Prejudice when they have openly gay contestants on to see the reactions from the panelist.

I was watching the last 30 minutes of Without Prejudice while watching Rick & Steve which wasn’t a good idea.  I wasn’t in a good mood because of how disappointing Without Prejudice was.  I love the attention to detail that the makers gave to this show.  Kristen and Dana have a rainbow flag outside their house so does Chuck and Evan and they also have a tiny lawn gnome.  Chuck and Evan’s bed is circular with a picture of a muscular man/ figurine above the bed.  They have pictures of muscular figurines all over the house.  Rick and Steve go to a psychologist to patch up their relationship and enhance their sex lives.  The psychologist instead brings them apart and then tells them that he’s available.  They both talk about who they would fantasize about in bed.  Rick said to Steve that he fantasizes about Elijah Wood and he still has his baby teeth.  LOL  Kristen and Dana were in bed talking about lesbian stereotypes.  I actually was disturbed when they immediately had sex afterward.  It’s because Kristen is so butch while Dana is feminine.  It perpetuates the heterosexual archetype in gay relationships.  They made up some straight jokes which were pretty funny.  Evan was talking with Chuck in bed about his direction in life.  Evan kept sighing and questioning his role in life which was cute.  I think Evan and Chuck are going to steal the comedic spotlight from the main characters.

D-List was really funny this week and mostly positive.  I’ll say the negative first.  Gay Londoners, what is up with them?  There were a few cute ones and three muscular ones there while Kathy was roaming the streets of SOHO.  Who is influencing them, McNulty?  When she was walking around SOHO with Graham Norton a gay fan came up to her and gave her a book.  She looked through the book and said “This is a lot of words.”  LOL  She said about Graham “He’s like the Jay Leno of England… but funny.”  Did anyone else notice how Kathy was waiting at the top of the stairs when Perez Hilton came to her house and that she pretended that she wasn’t?  I love how she tries to hide the fact that almost everything about her life is planned out and that she tries to cover it up.  When she arrived at the E! studios (they broadcast D-List in England) their lawyer gave Kathy a long list of words she can not say.  She pretty much threw the list out the window saying “That’s not what makes this flower flourish.”  Next week is the season finale.  I don’t know why Bravo doesn’t order more episodes when the show is a hit and has been on for three seasons, six episodes is not enough.
