"RuPaul's Drag Race" hopeful arrested for assault on Florida Mayor

Eugene Ornelas Jr. as his drag persona Chyna

Considering the buzz it ignited, I guess it's not a surprise that RuPaul's Drag Race would be the first Logo (AfterElton's parent company) program to run into one of those reality TV scandals. Eugene Ornelas, Jr. is one of many drag performers hoping to be a part of the show's next season (along with his drag persona, Chyna) and he was just arrested for allegedly attacking Mulberry, Florida Mayor Julian Mullis.

Chyna lives with Mullis and his two children, but while the police report says that the two are in a relationship, Mullis describes him as a "roommate" and is talking about resigning because of the focus on his personal life. Allegedly, the two got in an argument after Chyna brought a stranger home, leading to Chyna throwing a beer bottle at Mullis.

The intersection of drag, reality TV and local politics certainly makes for an ... unprecedented scandal. We'll have to keep an eye on how this develops.

In the meantime, check out the video below of how St. Petersburg local news WTSP covered the story, which includes a look at the RuPaul's Drag Race casting site and a clip of Chyna performing. What do you think? Do they manage to follow the story fairly?

    Pretty fair

If neither of the participants in the fracas are going to talk to the press, this is pretty much what you get and was a reasonable story from the television station. It is reasonable for the people in that town to be concerned that their mayor, a father of two small(?) children, has someone living in his home that unstable.

I suppose it exposes my own biases that "unstable" and "drag queen" are usually redundant.

    This is wild.

I feel horrible for those children. 8(

On the bright side, it's some much needed Drag Race publicity.

    Bound to happen

Sooner or later  it was bound to happen.  If it's for real it's a shame for the children they have to be a part of it. If it's for publicity for her then she's one of those to whom I have no sympathy. Reality shows are the death knell to most relationships these days. ( Please don't even bring up the Bachelor/Bacherlorette it's pathetic ). I don't know who said it but it's so true today. Fame earns you nothing but a lack of privacy.

What does his being a drag performer have to do with the fight?

There is no reason for the local news to discuss Eugene Ornelas, Jr work as a drag queen at such length in such a short piece. It is nothing to be ashamed of.

Unless Orneals was performingly secretly and hiding it from his boyfriend or the drag performance was some how the cause of the fight,  why go there except to sensationalize the story?

People have a lot of prejudice and misconceived notions about drag and the media is fully aware of the effect of putting in the clips of Orneals performing.

Being a drag performer doesn't make you more likely to throw a bottle at your boyfriends head.

Having too much to drink, being high and/or having a rotten bad temper might.

I'm not excusing the guys behavior (who brings a trick home when you live with your boyfriend and his kids, that's just crazy?).  He also clearly has had issues before so maybe his boyfriend made the right decision getting him arrested.  Maybe he'll get some help.

It felt to me like the in-studio coverage was trying to connect his being a drag performer with him being violent or a criminal and that does not sit right with me.

Drag queens are no more likely to be "unstable" than cops or school teachers or your local parish priest.

I'm glad no one is talking to the media, I hope they continue NOT to give them a story. It's a matter between the two of them and the police.

For all we know the kids could be perfectly fine, we shouldn't assume.

    Agreed

His status as a Drag performer makes no difference whatsoever  other than to inflame media attention. They are two men in a relationship. period.
