Seven Gay TV Shows Overdue for a DVD Release

As great as it was to see the life of Pedro Zamora dramatized last night in Pedro, seeing a scripted version of his Real World days made me think about how long its been since I've seen the real Pedro on The Real World: San Francisco. That Real World season is one of the series' most memorable, largely because of the young man we lost so soon after we realized how special he was ... and, yet, the only Real World seasons available on DVD is the first New York season and the shark-jumping Las Vegas season.

That got me thinking of other gay TV shows that linger in my mind that aren't available on DVD, but seem worth revisiting. Here are six more shows that deserve to be found on DVD store shelves.

Brothers (Showtime, 1984)

Long before Queer as Folk or United States of Tara, Showtime broke ground by giving us the first sitcom to include a gay character whose sexual orientation wasn't ignored after he came out. Brothers introduced us to the life of Cliff Waters (Paul Regina), a Philadelphia man who comes out on his wedding day and tries figure out his life from there, with help from his supportive (but sometimes clueless) brothers and his gay friend Donald (Phillip Charles MacKenzie). I know I'm not the only one who'd like to see the landmark series become available again and it certainly deserves to live on.

The Tracey Ullman Show (Fox, 1987)

When I started researching this list, The Tracey Ullman Show didn't quickly come to mind as a candidate. I figured such an amazing and well-regarded series must have had a DVD release that I just missed, but it turns out that the show that helped launched the Fox Network (which memorably included awkward teen Francesca and her two gay dads) isn't available on DVD. That's very sad to hear, considering the great sketches (like the time Francesca learns cynicism by working a shift at a Mexican fast food joint) that haven't been seen in years.

Pasadena (Fox, 2001)

Back in 2001, Pasadena creator Mike White was only known for his indie hit Chuck & Buck. While both Pasedena and Chuck & Buck got plenty of critical praise, it wasn't enough to keep Fox from giving the soap a Friday night time slot of doom. Now that he's better known thanks to movies like The Good Girl and School of Rock as well as his recent stint on The Amazing Race, perhaps its time to see if audiences would be more willing to check out the cult hit.

It's All Relative (ABC, 2003)

While multi-camera sitcoms are often looked at as dinosaurs, It's All Relative broke ground that hasn't been repeated thus far. It's All Relative followed a young couple whose families clashed: his parents were conservative Catholics while her parents were the gay men who adopted her. Comedies featuring gay parents are still rare (even rarer, It's All Relative cast two openly gay actors — Christopher Sieber and John Benjamin Hickey — in the roles) and a DVD release of It's All Relative would help address that void.

Lace (1984)

In the 80's it was rare to see a sweeps month without some kind of trashy mini-series full of sex and scandal and Lace is the one that lingers in the pop culture memory for its memorable line, "Which one of you bitches is my mother?" Following Phoebe Cates' search for her mother (among three women who conspired to hide which one was pregnant) Lace is classic TV camp and its legendary line shouldn't be allowed to fade from memory.

The Life and Loves of a She-Devil (BBC, 1986)

While I'm on the topic of campy mini-series, might I push for one of my all-time favorites? While most Americans are more familiar with the movie starring Roseanne and Meryl Streep, the BBC version goes to dark places the American movie didn't dare to approach and the dramatic flair of Julie T Wallace makes this mini-series one that deserves to be seen again.

The Life And Loves Of A She-Devil

is available on Region 2 DVD.

It should have been a Region 0 disc but... it's not. It is dated but I still love it.

    TV shows on DVD

QUE PASA USA.  About a Cuban Miami family.Unbeknown to the partents, their son is gay.  Some really hilarious scenes. One has the clueless parents finding the son's poppers in the fridge and when they try a "sniff test"...so so funny.

    Some of My Best Friends

I'd like to see this on DVD. Alec Mapa was hysterical, and Danny Nucci was adorable. The weak spot was Jason Bateman trying to act a gay character, but I enjoyed it just the same. The difference between Bateman and the two gay dads on It's All Relative for me reinforces the notion that gay actors should be playing the gay roles. Brothers on You Tube

Interesting series. I got introduced to this show by that post you link to.

giovannif7 has been uploading some episodes from VHS tapes and you can see them on YouTube. Here is an easier to find link:

Its funny and it tackles the gay issue in some surprising manners.

How can anyone forget Lace, seriously I miss the "miniseries event". Its All Relative I remember very fondly as well.

    Great choices, great shows.

    Thank you, Lyle!

I really appreciate the Brothers DVD endorsement. Hopefully we can generate a new wave of interest so that Showtime will consider re-releasing the show. And thank you, netogeno, for providing the YouTube link - hopefully lots of folks will get a chance to check out some of the episodes. For anyone who hasn't yet, please go to:

    Rags to Riches (1987)

I'm upset that "Rags to Riches" (1987) was not included on the list. It was a tv musical drama which will never be released because of the musical rights involved. I love that show so much.
