"The Simpsons" outs another character

On last night's Simpsons Homer Simpson started another business, "Sweet Conclusions", where he offered to handle relationship breakups for other people. It gave the show an opportunity to bring back Homer's gay ex-roommates, Grady (played by Scott Thompson) and Julio, and to out a popular character. It also gave the show a chance to clear up another character's sexual orientation (or just raise more confusion).

Find out which Springfield resident was outed after the break!

When Grady calls Homer to book his breakup services, he mentions that he's dating someone new just as Duff Man steps out of the shower and playfully snaps his towel at Grady. Considering how Duff Man parodies the way beer marketing is often drenched in machismo, seeing him in a relationship with Grady strikes me as very subversive.

Until now, most of Springfield's gays have lived up to various gay stereotypes. I don't have a problem with that since there's a lot more to the characters but it's great to see The Simpsons add a gay who brings some diversity in the mix. That struck me even more in the club scene where Homer breaks the news to Julio: while you can find some stereotypical images in there, that's not all you see among the clubgoers.

The episode also outed Homer's co-worker Lenny as straight. There's been a lot of speculation about Lenny and Carl's close relationship (is it a bromance or a romance?) and last night we learned that Lenny had a girlfriend, Doreen. Then again, Lenny breaks up with Doreen as soon as we meet her, so who knows ... maybe he was freeing himself up for Carl?

I've done my share of complaining about The Simpsons over the years, but the past couple seasons have been really strong, and the subtleties of outing Duff Man is a good reminder of the show's overall quality. What did you think?

    Yay so awesome

And he's hot in a cheesy kind of way. BTW did Homer say this was his ex- college roommate?  The only roommates he ever had in college was the three nerds... not that this show has ever been big on continuity, in fact its complete lack of continuity is used to parody the average TV show. This just seemed odd because we know Homer didn't go to college, except for that one episode where he was with those guys. Still love this show after all these years!

    Just an ex-roommate...

IIRC, Homer lived with Grady and Julio during one of the times he and Marge broke up.

    Well, the actor who is

Well, the actor who is playing Duff Man now, at least.

BTW I completely agree, Lyle. The Simpsons has been really good for the past couple seasons. Too bad nobody watches it anymore.

    Duffman

Duffman might not stay gay though... he's not a character so much as a marketing tool. One of the previous episodes even has him saying 'Duffman never dies, only the actors who play him'

    If the outing you're

If the outing you're referring to is Duffman's, then it's not new. Duffman has been outed before. I think he stated that he was in a committed homosexual relationship once. Only to later be seen with a woman.

This can be explained by the fact that there are several actors at any given time portraying Duffman. So this isn't his outing, unless it's yet another, as yet to have been seen "gaying it up", Duffman.

In short, at least one Duffman has been known to at least be bisexual for a while now.

    Yep

Yes, in "Homerazzi," the restaged photo of an anniversary dinner has DuffMan cannoodling with Booberella... and Bart says that he's supposed to be in a committed gay relationship.

    Great news!

That's awesome. I love how matter-of-fact The Simpsons is about gay characters now.

I still don't believe that Lenny's straight though...
