The best film costume of all time? Really?

In Style magazine and British TV channel Sky Movies have conducted a poll asking, "What are the best film costumes of all time?" The winner is a striking green dress worn by Keira Knightley in 2007's Atonement (pictured above).

Now, it's a stunning gown, and one that effectively captures the eye. But looking at the rest of the list, I have to ask if it's a bit early to decide that that is the best film costume of all time. Let's take a loot at the rest of the selections:

In second place is the dress Marilyn Monroe wore while standing over a subway grate in The Seven Year Itch:

In third place was the little black dress worn by Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast at Tiffany's:

Fourth place went to the outfit sported by Olivia Newton-John in the closing number of Grease:

The rest of the list includes the ensemble Kate Winslet wore when Leonardo DiCaprio took her "flying" over the bow, Diane Keaton's outfit in Annie Hall, the glittery number that Nicole Kidman sang "Diamonds Are A Girl's Best Friend" in Moulin Rouge, Liza Minelli's Cabaret costume, Cate Blanchett gown from Elizabeth: The Golden Age and Vivien Leigh's Gone with the Wind dresses:

See what I mean? Every other costume on this list has had a few years (or decades) to establish itself. Additionally, these are all films that have made a strong impact on the pop culture landscape, so these costumes bring to mind the associated effects those films have had on our culture. Most of these costumes are iconic enough that there's money to be made in selling merchandise inspired by them.

Atonement, meanwhile, arrived in theatres a month ago and hasn't received a wide release yet in the States. So far, it just hasn't had the chance to make that kind of impact, and there hasn't been the time to see if that impact will last. Doesn't it seem a bit much to declare it greater than some of these costumes, which have had the chance to prove their ability to endure? I'm certainly curious as to who the respondents of this survey might have been.

What do you think? Is Knightley's Atonement dress so great a costume it towers over the others on the list? Are there any great costumes that belong on the list that are missing?

that green dress is pretty, but something about it is not sitting well with me....oh, right....i feel like it should be filled out a bit and er...keira is not filling it out...it just does not seem to fit her...

    Behind the Green Dress

"It takes a village (to make Village People)"

Earlier in the film, Knightley plunges into a fountain to retrieve pieces of a vase.  When she pops back out of the water, her slip is clinging to her form in a most provocative way.  That's the "dress" I would have chosen for the list.

It's not easy being the green dress

I agree -- after all the hype I saw about the damn dress I expected it to jump off her bones and do a soft-shoe, and it's really just given a few nice shots and is pinned to a library wall for the rest of its time on screen.

I guess the people who voted

I guess the people who voted had not seen an older movie for a while, they appear to have movie amnesia. There are a couple in the list that were trully more relevant. And I love Keira, but the dress...eh...needs...eh...something. Not the best dress for her phisique.

    NO!

The dress is cute and all, but come on! it needs time.

    >I'm certainly curious as to who the respondents of this survey might have been<

The marketing department behind "Atonement".  This list is just a thinly-veiled promotion for the movie, just like EW's "best action movie" list last summer that just so happened to pick "Die Hard" number 1 right at the same time the next "Die Hard" movie was going into theaters.

In other words, In Style got a nice check from Focus Features to run this article.

    yeah, no

In six months everyone will be all "green dress? What?"

Also Vivien Leigh's Gone with the Wind dresses? No, the memorable one for me is Carol Burnett's curtain-rod Gone with the Wind dress - THAT'S the one I'll continue to remember.

    I would also add another

I would also add another Marilyn Monroe dress. Her pink one with a huge bow in back during her "Diamonds are a Girl's Best Friend" number. Madonna copied this for her "Material Girl" video.

Is there a reason why the list only includes female wardrobe although the title is gender neutral? Otherwise I'd put in John Travolta's Saturday Night Fever white pantsuit and a few more but I'm in a bit of a hurry.
