Coming soon to a theater near you: a remake of The Women

Can the magic happen twice? 1939's The Women was a movie with an all-female cast and sharp-tongued dialogue delivered by the likes of Joan Crawford, Rosalind Russell and Hedda Hopper. Needless to say, it has become a camp classic.

Murphy Brown-creator Diane English has been trying to get a remake of The Women made since 1995. After all that time, the project is finally going to happen and will begin filming in August. This remake is expected to star Annette Bening, Jada Pinkett Smith, Candice Bergen, Meg Ryan, Debra Messing and Eva Mendes.

Diane English may not have seen much success since Murphy Brown, but from what I remember of another series she wrote, Love & War, she certainly can write sharp dialogue. Love & War also had English writing for actresses embraced by gay audiences like Annie Potts and Joanna Gleason. (If only I could confirm this memory on YouTube...)

What do you think? Is The Women too much of a classic to try to remake? Does this cast have the potential to live up to the original?
