The Week in Gay Geek: Cho's Sulu, cute Shojo boys and Tarzan's a hottie

  • Must-See Geek TV?
PC Magazine lists its Ten Favorite Geeky TV Shows with the Russell T Davies-led Doctor Who being named second. (But The Big Bang Theory? Really?)
  • Attack of the Heroes chatter
Gamer TV network G4TV will be airing repeating the latest episode of Heroes on Saturdays. It will be followed by a half-hour talk show discussing Heroes. I have to admit I'm intrigued -- G4 has occasionally shown awareness that gamers can come from a variety of demographics, including gays, so I wonder if the show's homerotic tendencies will ever get discussed. On the other hand, G4's coverage of the San Diego Comic Con never looks like the event I've attended.
  • Tokyopop's quest for the cutest shojo boy
Comics publisher Tokyopop is asking who's the cutest shojo boy? I'm more of a Viz reader myself, but I'm happy to see the boys from Gravitation in the mix, but why don't my boys from Fake get some love? Too bad the cutest boy from a Tokyopop comic -- Noah from 12 Days -- isn't included in the mix.
  • Link of the week:
Last weekend, Pappy's Golden Age Comics Blogzine discovered how the Burn Hogarth sometimes looked like gay erotica. Doesn't the example above look like some geek pin-up? He's beautiful! He's buff! He reads! Is there a collected edition out there?

    Desire Drawn in Ink

Those are erotic drawings of Tarzan.  Muscular men reading is a big turn on for me.  I looked at Burne's profile on Wikipedia and there is no mention of a girlfriend or wife.  In Europe he was called the "Michelangelo of the comic strip."  He had an extensive knowledge of varying subjects.  This all leads me to believe that he was gay and probably single most of the time.

Burne got rave reviews for his artwork and teaching, I'll have to check out some of his stuff.

Yes, Hogarth was gay, or at least I've been told so by another proeminent gay comics artist.
Lyle, you can find a copy of Hogarth's origin of Tarzan at Amazon for cheap: http://www.amazon.com/Tarzan-apes-Burne-Hogarth/dp/0823050602

    Homoerotic?

You mean like Mohinder and Matt living together in a domestic partnership and raising a daughter? That kind of homoerotic?

The show has a segment of its audience that loves finding homoerotic subtext in the characters' interactions. The producers acknowledged that audience at San Diego this year. It's kind of like a slash/ship community, only this requires the show give them material to work from. Over at television without pity, the Heroes boards has a subforum devoted to "HoYay" that has links to fanvids that illustrate it better than I can explain.

Overall, with the way the show plays to that audience, I think it'd be odd omission on a show that spends 30 min/week on Heroes.
