Rumorama: What's the future for "General Hospital"'s gay doc?
Since most soap opera news sites hurt my eyes, I usually get my fill of behind-the-suds rumors from message boards. Over at the Television without Pity forums, one poster is reporting that Jason Thompson (who plays the Chief-of-Staff on both General Hospital: Night Shift and the daytime mothership) told fans that we can expect a third season of Night Shift. Even better, gay head writer Sri Rao should be returning for the third season. That mixes interestingly with the rumor that Kyle might start working during daylight hours (possibly bringing his boyfriend, Eric, with him) once this season wraps up. That rumor didn't leave me very happy since (back in my soap geek days) I learned to avoid any soap where (current General Hospital Executive Producer) Jill Faren Phelps is in charge. (A lesson that has saved me lots of money from not having to replace TV sets broken by flying objects.)
So. I'm hoping the next time we see Kyle it'll be on a new season of Night Shift, but I'm curious how everyone else is feeling about Kyle and Eric. If you could choose, would you wait until a new season of Night Shift is ready to see Kyle again (under the same writer who created him)? Or would you rather see Kyle head to the daytime soap and go up against Nuke (even if that means a new creative team for Kyle)? Since we haven't had much of a chance to talk about Kyle and Eric, I'd love to hear how you're feeling about their current storyline. I'm enjoying their story so far ... not only do Adam Grimes and Chad Allen have great chemestry together, Night Shift has nicely demonstrated why they would be drawn to each other. Let's discuss it in the comments, and take our Night Shift poll after the break! Submitted by on Tue, 2008-10-07 09:12. |

I'm torn. On one hand I
I'm torn.
On one hand I want more soap to jump on the gay character bandwagon.
On the other hand, GH has had a reputation of the writers being a bunch of misogynist macho frat boys who love death and guns and that nice characters or hospital characters don't stand a chance anyway. So even if he joined, he likely wouldn't be used much anyway.
However, I do think that they probably would "only" underuse him (as opposed to turning him straight or into a serial killer), so I figure, what's the harm? When in doubt, I'm in favor of more soaps having gay characters, even if they might only be used as bit players.
I partly agree with Lola
I haven't watched the daily GH since 1983, and based on comments I've seen at other, soap-based forums, the show is pretty much just a gangster soap opera--I have difficulty seeing how Kyle would fit into such a mix.
Obviously, I suppose they could have him get involved with one of Sonny's henchmen; that assumes that Chad's character doesn't make the transfer, opening the door for Kyle to find a romance elsewhere.
Clearly, I'm not quite sure how I feel; I'd hate to wait a year to see what happens with Kyle, and I suspect Adam Grimes would appreciate the work; but unless they're going to fully or even partly utilize him, I don't see the point. But I would like to see more gay characters on daytime, and Kyle is such a terrific character that has potential....

I LOVE the relationship
Since We're Talking Rumors....
What I've heard was that GH/NS, which will end in a big cliffhanger in a few weeks will be back in January and will run for 26 weeks if not more. The show is a huge hit so SoapNet/ABC want to take advantage of it. Because of that, no one is leaving the show and the cast will remain intact, including leads Robin and Patrick, who will leave the mothership and make GH/NS their full time home. To repeat, however, this is just a rumor because there is also still talk that Kyle and Claire will both go to the mothership. There are also rumors that the network is so happy with the writing of Sri Rao that he will take over the writing at GH or co-head write with embattled current head writer Bob Guza, who many feel need a break... or a handler. So, it seems like there are a lot of rumors, but no solid facts about what the show plans to do or where the characters will be going. But with GH/NS coming to a close, I suspect we'll hear some news soon.
I'm torn about what I'd like to see happen. I really like GH/NS and I'd like the keep the current cast and writing team as it is. OTOH, I'd love for Kyle to make a home at GH, but ONLY if Bob Guza is not at the helm. Kyle is a major character on GH/NS. We see him at work, his family life and his romantic life. At GH, he'd be a supporting character with minimal story, like most of the hospital staff. That's the way it is on that show when you're not afflilaited somehow with the mob. But if Sri Rao were to take over or at least co-head write the show, the 'hospital' would probably be a bigger factor in General Hospital and Kyle (not to mention a lot of other characters) would be used more effectively and actually be a viable, used character on the show. As much as I want to see more gay characters on daytime, I don't want them if they are just wallpaper or filler without storylines.
I'd Love.....
I'd love to see Kyle on GH after NS has ended, but I guess, like most of you guys, I'm torn because I'd hate to see them change him; reduse him to just filler or worse. (We all remenber what happend with Lucas.) You know that'll happen under the current writing staff.
But my fears will lessen if Sri Rao comes on, so we just have to play the wait and see game.
PERFECT MOMENT, PERFECT KISS, YAY GH NIGHT SHIFT
Thanks to Anthony for capturing and posting the Kyle and Eric clips.
I totally waited up for them.
Fabulous!
May G.H. Night Shift continue to write such lsold moments for Kyle in the very near future and beyond.
Daytime G H - FEH!
