News, Reviews & Commentary on Gay and Bisexual Men in Entertainment and the Media

"Krod Mandoon" and the sleazy Biclops video clip

We've had a fair bit of discussion here on the site about Comedy Central's Krod Mandoon and the Flaming Sword of Fire. We gave the show props overall for being fairly funny, but seriously marked it down for the cliche, sex-obsessed character of Bruce (Marques Ray).

After watching the first couple of episodes, a fair number of readers had a different take on Krod and the character of Bruce finding him to be funny, non-offensive and treated much like every other character. Those opinions led to a spirited discussion in the comments which basically amounted to "We'll agree to disagree." Or as it's known in my house, "You're still wrong but I'm tired of arguing about it."

Last week's preview for Krod Mandoon included a creature called a Biclops that made it seem that this Cyclops would be bisexual. As you can tell from this "hot tub" scene from tonight's episode, that is definitely the case.

So the show has now given us two queer characters both so far defined by their overt sexuality that is played for laughs and creeps straight guys out. Nice that.

And pity the poor bisexual male. Not counting Roger the Alien on American Dad, I count one other significant bisexual character currently on U.S. television — Andrew from Sit Down Shut Up, the sex-obsessed drama teacher who hides in locker room lockers and dreams of a half man/half woman lover. Because that's what bisexuality is all about after all.

Somehow I just can't find any of this very funny.

Looking for a bright spot

Well, if I try and look for a bright spot in that clip, I guess we can go with Sean Maguire in a hot tub, wearing less than he normally does on the show.  Oops - I may have just defined myself by my sexuality.  Uhh, how many circles can I take this in before I dig myself to China?

As awful as the gay and bi characters are on this show, I find myself laughing at it - and it could be that I wasn't expecting much, or it could be that really, all the characters are bad - Krod's a lovesick idiot, she's a slut, he's a slut.  They're all pretty much bad archtypes and I guess I don't see our gay as any different from the others.  And I thought Biclops was kind of clever.

Now, Andrew on Sit Down, Shut Up - don't get me started.  Now I've got a 30 minute block in my animation I have to fill with something.

Your Expectations = too high

Why are we expecting this to be a good representation of any of these rolls. tHey're not being homophobic. All of the characters are really shamelessly bad caricatures of their roles!

It's supposed to be insensitive. It's supposed to be stupid and dumb. that's what this whole show is about. Stop looking for good gay characters in parody shows and ask why there aren't more of them in major primetime shows. Or ask why there isn't a bigger array of gay male types on tv that's supposed to be taken seriously instead of this. That's the real issue that needs addressing. not this.

We address thaose issues all the time. Covering that

doesn't mean it's not also worth looking at the messages sent by shows like this.

There are two kinds of parody shows...

Those that cleverly parody the inane, the foolish, and the retrograde forces in society (see John Stewart, Stephen Colbert, MY NAME IS EARL, THE SIMPSONS, etc.), and then are those simply that reinforce society's worst, most simple-minded prejudices and bigotries for cheap, easy laughs (see Andrew Dice Clay, Larry the Cable Guy, and, often, KROD MANDOON). I know which kind of parody show I'd rather watch. I'm done with KROD.

You guys are going waaaay

You guys are going waaaay over the top as usual.

I think that's going to be my recurring phrase on this Blog, I'm sure it's going to be on my tombstone or something ;).

This is horribly insensitive

This is horribly insensitive to Cylopses everywhere. Not only that, but wouldn't a Biclops have two eyes? Aren't we all bicylopses?

Mask

I'm far more disturbed by the Biclops' uncanny resemblance to Eric Stoltz in "Mask" than I am by anything else.
