"High Society" Shows How Low the CW has Sunk When it Comes to Gay Visibility

The CW is an U.S. television network with the motto TV to Talk About.

When it comes to gay male visibility, the CW doesn't have much to talk about.

There, barely there, need a microscope to find

In fact, they kind of suck. They also apparently think you are as dumb as a box of rocks. Why do I say that? Because I just spent two hours watching their new reality show High Society.

These people think they are better than you.
They aren't no matter how stupid their eyewear.

It was like spending two hours in the sewer. Except the sewer is less sh*tty than this show.

The CW thinks you'll be interested because HS is about wealthy, Manhattan socialites who are ostensibly pretty and interesting. It's like Gossip Girl, but "real." If everyone on Gossip Girl were utterly vapid, amoral and stupid all the time.

Skinny Bimbo #3: We're rich blond New Yorkers, so poor and ugly people should care about what we do.
Skinny Bimbo #1: Skinny brunettes are people too!
Skinny Bimbo #2: Did you just hear something?
Skinny Bimbo #3: No, it's just you and me here.

Really they think you'll be interested because most of these people behave awfully. This includes Paul Johnson Calderon who is gay — and NOT to be confused with JP Calderon. Usually it would be a good thing to have a gay man on a show, but in this case it definitely isn't.

PJC: I'm known as the King of the Bowties!
World: Actually, you're known as the King of the Self-Absorbed Pricks.

Paul says most people call him PJC. I'm guessing that stands for Pretty Jerky Creep. In the first two episodes, PJC:

  • tells his mother he needs $50,000 to get an apartment of his own. When she warns him he's spending his money too fast, he calls her "Mussolini." She gives him $25,000 out of his trust fund that he then spends on clothes, drinks and a fancy hotel where he takes a bubble bath.
  • tries to throw a drink in someone's face, misses and hits someone else. He then throws another drink at the person he meant to hit. When the police are called, he flees in cab.
  • drives around in a limousine and says "I do what I want, when I want, and if you don't like it ... peace." He then throws a half-full beer can out of the window.
  • He has been to rehab twice and has reportedly been caught on videotape stealing purses.

His mother, Melissa Johnson Michael is absolutely certain PJC is on the right track and never has more than one drink an evening. He actually drinks like a fish. She also hopes he'll settle down with a nice guy like Anderson Cooper. She seems so clueless about parenting, I wonder if she actually knows how babies are made.

The last thing Melissa Johnson Michael got right about being a mother.

PJC is a self-absorbed, narcissistic, revolting excuse for a human being. He also gets more screentime in the first two episodes than pretty much any other gay man on the CW.

On the upside, PJC is not the worst person on this show, as hard as that is to believe. That "honor" goes to socialite Jules Kirby who is also racist, homophobic and classist. She also wants to work for the U.N. Unless it's finding grenades by walking around Cambodian fields while wearing high heels, I don' think the U.N would have much use for her.

All the makeup and glam lighting can't hide what's on the inside, Jules.

In 2008, AfterElton.com asked CW President Dawn Ostroff, about her network's lack of gay representation. She told us: “It’s almost like in some ways it’s such a non-issue for [our audience] that it’s not even an issue whether or not you see it.”

At the time we thought her answer was remarkably clueless, but now that we've met PJC, I really really wish she had stuck with the "not see it part." Because this is much worse.

Seriously, Dawn? That's your thinking?
No wonder you okayed this piece of crap.

So all this time I've been hoping the CW would add a gay character to The Vampire Diaries or Supernatural or even Beverly Hills 90210 and this is what I get instead?

Thanks for nothing CW!
