"As the World Turns" Cancelled as of September 2010

In sad, but not entirely unexpected news, it was announced this morning that as of September 2010 As the World Turns would go off the air 54 years after the show first debuted. For fans of U.S.  television's first gay supercouple, Luke Snyder (Van Hansis) and Noah Mayer (Jake Silbermann), this is obviously very sad news.

From the time the two teens first met in Oakdale to their first kiss to the kissing ban to kissing again to their finally "doing it", Nuke as they are affectionately known, had many viewers cheering for them to find some measure of happiness together. And while few would argue that the powers that be frequently aggravated many a gay fan with how they handled the couple, I think it's fair to say that without Luke and Noah on ATWT there very well might not be a Kyle and Oliver on One Life to Live today.

As regular readers already know, a recently blinded Noah is headed away for a while to deal with his accident. But with ten months remaining before the show's end, perhaps it's not too much to hope that the show will give us one more first — the first wedding for a gay male supercouple.
