ATWT Update: Luke and Noah swimmingAs the tease earlier this week promised on As the World Turns, Luke (Van Hansis) and Noah (Jake Silbermann) inadvertently wound up wet and shirtless in each others arms where sparks were clearly flying. The episode ended right there — of course — but promises to pick up there again today. No doubt, we'll have lots of "Oops-that-didn't-mean-anything-and-I'm-not-really-turned-on" blustering from both parties. But how wrong they are!
Van Hansis also did an interview recently with Soap Talk hosted by Lisa Rinna. Hansis comes off great, and Rinna ... doesn't. Here is a little of their exchange when the topic turns to when Hansis learned he would be playing a gay character:
Cruel? Is she for real? Clearly, Rinna is known for her deep thoughts and insight as opposed to her big ta-ta's.
The interview gets considerably better afterward and Hansis is great. I especially liked what he had to say about Luke's getting a love interest and what really matters is that it's with a good person. Submitted by on Fri, 2007-08-10 12:31. |

Rinna's comments
I'm totally loving Luke/Noah on ATWT!
In regards to Lisa Rinna's comment, I honestly think she had a point. One should be informed of what is expected of them BEFORE they are given the job. Yes...it is cruel and not respectful, perhaps Van Hansis would not WANT to play a gay character. He's well within his rights to be uncomfortable playing a gay character..
It was a very sneaky thing to do.
Hansis not knowing Luke would be gay
I have a clean copy of the Soap Talk interview somewhere in my archives. I'll upload it if I can find it.

I actually agree with you. In fact, I don't think we have all the information. By not telling an actor such a huge part of his/her character, the producers did a disservice to both the actor and the show. For example, if Hansis was uncomfortable, the acting would definitely be compromised, lowering the quality of the show. This would definitely be true if a kiss or other intimate scene was planned.
Because of American attitudes, playing gay is, for better or worse, similar to having a nude scene. As far as I know, it is customary to let an actor know that s/he will sppoear nude during auditions so that s/he can decide if it's an appropriate role. Imagine the mess had Hansis been a homophobic fundie Christian. Since you're not allowed to job applicants their religious or political beliefs, revealing the gay aspect was logical.
In other words, I'm sure the info was available. Even if they didn't tell Hansis at the audition (since the scene he had to perform probably had no gay contents), his agent probably knew.
I Don't See The Problem Here
Hansis knew early on, practically from the start, that Luke was going to be gay. Like he said himself, if he didn't want to do they could've found someone else. And since they hadn't shot any scenes yet there certainly was time to do it. People are making it seem like he was tricked into something.

I don't see how it was a cruel thing. Gay actors play straight all the time. They're supposed to be comfortable kissing someone of the opposite sex but it's "cruelty" when a straight actor has to kiss a member of the same sex or play gay?
Riiiight.
Anyway, I saw the clip and
