"Battlestar Galactica" spinoff "Caprica" to include gay characters according to executive producer
Great news gay fans of science fiction! It looks like Torchwood's Captain Jack might not be the only gay in outer space much longer! In an AfterElton.com/AfterEllen.com Live Chat conducted Thursday night with writer Jane Espenson — best known for her work on Ellen, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and Battlestar Galactica — a reader asked if Fox's Dollhouse would have any gay characters or storylines.
That prompted a reader to ask:
Hmm, not much to go on, but Espenson is not only a writer for Caprica, but one of the executive producers so I'd assume she wouldn't tout this if she wasn't pretty certain it would come to pass. It's definitely something we'll keep an eye on! Espenson also answered a couple of questions about Lt. Gaeta on Battlestar Galactica.
And that prompted a reader to follow up with:
And Espenson signed off with this plug for Caprica.
And gay characters! Gay science fiction characters! Espenson answered more questions about Gaeta, plus questions about Oz's being homophobic on Buffy the Vampire Slayer as well as her thoughts on whether American television will ever have a gay male relationship on par with Willow and Tara from Buffy. Great news
Sweet but...
But...
As soon as Gaeta was suddenly announced as gay he went crazy leading the revolution and came to an unhappy end.
The only other gay character I can think of on BSG was Admiral Caine from the Pegasus, and she wasn't exactly stable either.
I hope they lift their game on Caprica.
We also got a Gay Admiral on BSG
Yea for their being gay characters on CAPRICA. As always, it'll be interesting to see how they are handled; are they going to be as interestingly written as the rest of the series regulars or just window dressing on the show?
And this isn't meant as a knock against lesbians, but are the gay characters just going to be women, which most straight genre boys don't have a problem with, or are there also going to be some male-on-male action to challenge them as well?
Oh, and did anyone notice we had a (presumably) gay admiral leading the rag-tag fleet on the BSG finale last night?
Totally noticed
I have ot say firstly, that the finale of BSG was one of the most memorable sci-fi pictures ive seen. It was beautifully done.
About CAPRICA. Thank goodness, but to be honest I dont think I'll enjoy the show. The whole reason I loved BSG was because it was a space-opera. Caprica probably will be on the ground the whole time. Ill still try it thought to find out.
And to Jody. I totally noticed the gay admiral at the end. yay for him :)
