Gay Neo-Nazi Movie "Brotherhood" Wins at Rome Film Festival

Thure Lindhardt

Over the weekend, the Danish film Brotherhood snagged the best picture award at the Rome Film Festival. Directed by Nicolo Donato, the movie is about a secret love affair between two members of a neo-Nazi group. You know, your classic "self-hating gay racist falls in love with another closted gay racist and all sorts of wacky adventures happen" gay romantic comedy. Or perhaps it's a little darker than that.

Director Nicolo Donato

The movie stars Thure Lindhardt as Lars, a former soldier who falls in love with his neo-Nazi mentor Jimmy (David Dencik) after he joins Jimmy's group of racists. Given that neo-Nazis aren't exactly known for being gay-friendly, their affair carries a great deal of risk for the two men. I haven't found out much more about the plot at this point, but we'll definitely be reviewing it when it gets released.

BTW, I couldn't help but groan after reading how dismissive Noel Sheppard was over at wingnut site Newsbusters apparently just because the movie is about two gay men who aren't the usual stereotypes Sheppard expects his gay characters to be. Said Sheppard about the plot and the award:

So, the couple falls in love after performing raids on homosexuals? And such a plot line is worthy of top honors at a film festival?

Well, yes, Noel, at least according to the people who have actually seen the movie.

Now this sounds like a interesting film

Nothing wrong with a good gay conflict film aslong as its done well, I remember watching a film about a jewish neo-nazi a good while back now so if its half as good as that I shall be happy.

In the last months there has

In the last months there has been a very worrying amount of violence against gays in Rome, mostly by neo-nazis (or more appropriately neo-fascists). Plus, the parliament failed to approve an anti-homophobia bill. So maybe the award aims at raising the consciousness about all that, and rightly so.

Thure Lindhardt

I fell in love with Thure in Angels & Demons earlier this year. He was the best thing in the film.

This film looks interesting and seems similar to another film called Eye's Wide Open, in which two men who belong to an anti gay community (orthadox Jews in EWO), fall in love. I'm looking forward to it.

Thure

If it's of any importance, I can inform you that Thure is openly gay.

Whether he is single or not, I can't say.

Single?

He isn't.

Thure is dating a professional dancer (who is actually currently competing on the Danish version of 'Dancing with the Stars') from what I hear they have been together for a while.

Anyway, I think the movie looks great, and will definitely be watching it at some point.

Hmmm....

.... somehow I don't think that's going to have a happy ending.  Looks interesting though.

Do the following:

* Take any theme from World War II, particularly the holocaust and Nazis.

* Add in other minorities.  For example Jew or German Nazi is also black, gay, crippled, mentally challenged, handicapped, transexual, alcoholic, or otherwised challenged.

* Tack on a melodramatic sad ending bathed in angst. Suicide and cancer are always a plus.

* Profit!

Curious. Very Curious

I must say this is an interesting premise. It allows for some great character conflict.

I love the fact that they aren't conforming to the typical gay stereotypes. I hope the film allows to show gay people in an equally complicated yet humane light as such a film would have done with heterosexuals. It would be good to see a couple of thoughtfully written, morally ambiguous gay characters.
