Brothers & Sisters scoop: Kevin ain't the only 'mo on the show!

Yesterday Greg Hernandez posted a very interesting interview with Brothers & Sisters' creator Jon Robin Baitz. Baitz has puh-lenty to say about the show, but by far the most interesting quote was that Kevin is "...not the only gay person in the family. There are other things to look forward to in addition to Rob Lowe's brother. I think by the season finale, you'll understand that, where it's going."

Then AfterElton reader Kong Chang tipped me off to just who joins "our team" and I have to say, I was surprised. Baitz's earlier comments had got me wondering, but the answer (revealed in the season finale on May 20th) was not the one I expected.

So just who is the other gay Walker? The answer is after the jump! Only look if you really want to know!

It's Uncle Saul! Bet you didn't see that one coming!

So what else did Baitz have to say? Greg has it has all on his blog, but here are a couple of tidbits including that we haven't seen the last of Scotty (Luke Macfarlane) and that Jonathan Lapaglia, originally cast to play Kevin Walker (Matthew Rhys), was petrified of kissing another guy. Oy! Baitz said LaPaglia asked him, "'Am I going to have to kiss boys?'" and then added, "He seemed riddled with terror that someone was going to jump out and kiss him. And he's a really nice guy!"

Oh, good grief. Not another straight boy who goes all knock-kneed over kissing a guy! Thank goodness the role went to Rhys. (And I hear Kevin and Eric do get a little action in before the season ends!)

BTW, if you discuss this in the comments, please don't give away the surprise that Saul is gay in the subject line. Comments that do give it away in the title will be deleted! Thanks!

    OMG!!! Is this true?? Isn't

OMG!!! Is this true?? Isn't he like in love with Holly or something? It seemed that way to me anyway.

I just read this at Ask

I just read this at Ask Ausiello: Question: It's been forever since you have given us some Entourage scoop.— Alex Ausiello: Lloyd's finally getting a boyfriend — and he works at Foot Locker! The role is currently being cast, which means he won't show up until next season (starting in June). I didn't think he was gonna get a boyfriend because his role isn't meant to be that big. But I'm glad that he is!

    Rex suggested that might happen

when we did our last interview with him. Glad to see it's true!

    Yes, Anonymous writer

it's all true of what you're reading. It's all in the sides. There's more to it, but that's the big revelation!!!

Big shocker and big revelation! Will talk more in the Spoiler section of the B&S Forum if you want to know what else takes place in episode 23 where we find this out.

OMG, that is so out of the blue!

So that means he is bisexual(unless the Holly thing was a facade). A Bi guy on prime time is about god damn time. ... But I still can't believe that Saul likes men(it doesn't help that I still see him as the very evil Arvin Sloane). Maybe he is the one who deflowered Tucker Booth lol

    I also see him as

I also see him as Sloane all the time! Even though he is a good actor he will always be evil Sloane ;)

I am really looking forward to see this, I really really didn't expect it. I wonder if they had planned this from the beginning or just thought of it recently?

    Makes total sense to me

I thought Saul and Holly had absolutely zero chemistry together and their romantic scenes always made me uncomfortable. I guess they made Saul uncomfortable too!

Having him explore his sexual orientation so late in life will be interesting.

    I love that the show

will be doing an older gay guy. That will be much more interesting that another young guy just coming out.

    I was confused when

I was confused when Saul and Holly got together because I had just assumed Saul was gay anyway. I feel somewhat gratified.

    Duh!

Saul is perhaps past middle-aged, single, and hasn't had a family - ever.

I guess the show is taking  a stance on the biological vs. environmental debate on the cause of sexual orientation.

Personally, I'm not at all enthused that they're making Saul gay.  The writers have enough on their hands keeping Kevin interesting w/o becoming tiresome.  Plus, Saul hasn't exactly been an integral character, despite being a member of the Walker family (though not technically a Walker).

More ammo for the anti-"homosexual agenda" crowd.

P.S.  I was an Alias fan too.  Maybe they can bring in Michael Vartan as Kevin's next love interest.  He is a "serial dater," you know.

    Now Michael

Vartan would be an interesting addition, but how about with Saul? A little father/daddy thing going on, eh?

    Michael Vartan

Michael Vartan is unfortunately tied to a pilot. If it gets picked up, I don't see him coming onto B&S anytime soon. However, I would **love** to have Michael Vartan play one of Kevin's love intrerest. :)

    Re: Who is gay

The show has clearly come down on the "biology" side of the debate re: the causes of homosexuality (see everything related to Kevin), and I don't think Saul's coming out would change that at all. He's not just waking up one day and saying, "Gee, I think I should go for the mens." Rather, Saul is visited by an old "friend" and it's pretty clear they had a romantic past--though presumably a secretive one as the friend was married. Saul comes from a generation where the stigma of being gay was so great that many men and women stayed deeply buried in the closet well into adulthood and beyond, and I think it will take the unexpected visit by this man (who also asks Saul to pay him a visit after having recently separated from his wife) for Saul to finally face his emotional/psychological truth. I look forward to this storyline about an older character finally coming to terms with his sexuality, and in particular his interactions with Nora and Kevin are sure to be interesting.

    actually, not so surprising...

Saul has always struck me as a mysterious character. I've always gotten the impression that he was keeping something about himself hidden or locked away. In the early episodes, he seemed kind of shady. Then the show abandoned that, but further developed him only in terms of his relationships with other characters: protective big brother, loving uncle, trivia questioner at Game Night, suitor whose intentions with Holly were ambiguous at best. We never saw very much of who he was. I guess now we know why.

Not thrilled about who is gay

I'm not surprised but I was really hoping that it would be one of the women in the family. I love Kevin. He's a great character. And there's Scotty (whom it sounds like we'll see again, that's nice to read), Chad & now Jason. They've done a fantastic job with making all of these gay characters different from each other and so very human. It would have been nice to see the same kind of writing with a lesbian character. That said, I'm sure Ron will do a fantastic job.

    Me too

I was hoping it would be Rebecca of some sort since her romance with her professor didn't pan out so well, I thought maybe they would make her the gay one down the road. But oh well, I'm still watching the show, and although episode 17 didn't excite me, the last 2 were good, and we have 4 more episodes left to go! Now I'm hoping story for second season will start leaking because I'm sure they're already planning out the stages since they have to start shooting in late July/early August.

    "No More Lies"

Remember when Nora wigged out on Saul and demanded that there be "no more lies". At the time she was referring to Rebecca but at the same time, it's like she was giving permission, or demanding, that Saul fess up to her...
