IMHO "Brothers & Sisters" (3.18): "Taking Sides"

I knew this episode was in trouble when, in the opening scenes, Kevin went through security at the courthouse while Nora nagged him on the phone about coming to her "meet your half-brother lunch." His response? To leave his cell phone with the security guard so he could talk to Nora instead of Kevin.

This was bad because A) it meant of course we were in for another Walker get together B) we were about to see the Walker children again dodge Nora and C) Kevin just leaving his cell phone was just plain silly like too much about this show of late.

Sure enough, we then get a cavalcade of the Walker children brushing Nora off one at a time. At least Tommy has a decent excuse since he's being arraigned in court for embezzling money from Ojai. And I guess Kevin has to be there to defend him because he's ... oh, right, he's working for Senator McCallister now. Maybe he just wants to be there to gloat to see karma get Tommy back for firing Kevin.

Naturally, Tommy's troubles are being kept secret from Nora for now since we know a big get together is coming. She'll learn the news there and we'll have a big scene of Walkers yelling and carrying on.

What follows next are a bunch of scenes and storylines I just can't get that involved in. JuBecca are still struggling to keep Holly from coming between them. Good luck with that, kids! Plus we get to see them kiss twice while Scotty is nowhere to be seen.

A commercial comes on featuring Scott Bailey as hot centaur and I get interestedand a little weirded out by my interest!

Bring him on the show — as a centaur!

But then we are back and have Nora and Ryan together as Nora explains why none of her children not to mention most of the viewers want to see him. Wait, she says they just don't have time to see him. Same difference. Well, I still don't want to see him. As a consolation prize, Nora offers to get Ryan his own private tour of Ojai. Woo hoo!

The episode finally picks up a bit when Julia confronts Tommy outside the courtroom after realizing he really is an embezzling scumbag. She speaks for millions of viewers when she says he can't come home and "isn't wanted." We don't see much of her, but now I heart Julia although maybe she could've let Tommy come home one more time and then Lorena Bobbitt-ed him

Trust me, Tommy. You don't want to come home!

Then Sarah, Saul and Kevin yakkity yak about the case and I fall asleep for a little while. When I wake up Ryan is meeting Rebecca at Ojai and gets off a great line when Rebecca asks what he's doing there and Ryan says, "Didn't you get the memo? It's take your illegitimate child to work day." Go, Ryan! We then learn "Pears are amazing!"as Rebecca gives him the tour. Hmm, is there a spark here? Might Ryan later get a tour of the rest of Rebeccas fruits?

She looks ripe! I wonder if she has a loser boyfriend who used to do drugs?

A haggard Rob Lowe then appears, rubbing our collective noses in the fact he died but didn't stay dead last week. Kitty and Robert then yakkity yak that he needs to tell his kids he took on the Grim Reaper and won, but he wants to protect the little angels from the truth about how hard life is so they can instead be crushed slowly when he runs for Governor and keeps ignoring them.

Then we've got Sarah and Justin yakkity yakking about Tommy's situation. Justin won't help Tommy because Tommy didn't speak to him when he had his drug problem but Sarah he says he did it out of love. And I change the station out of boredom, but then I feel guilty and change it back because it would be wrong of me to copy someone else's recap and post it here. That's something Tommy would do.

The better to eat you with, my dear!

Sarah goes to discuss the situation with Holly and I'm hoping for a Holly/Sarah smackdown like we had with Nora/Holly, but it's more yakkity yak. And FYI, Kevin forbade Sarah from doing this, so naturally she does it anyway. Sarah comes off really bad here, ignoring Kevin's advice and making really stupid arguments as to why Holly should drop the charges.

Then we see Robert taking on his kids at Wii bowling with his disapproving ex and Kitty looking on, causing Robert to quip "This is why I never understood polygamy." Classy, Robert! Kitty grabs the Wii remote and says it's time to play Wii Lorena Bobbitt and Robert runs shrieking from the room. Okay, that doesn't really happen, but we do get this great grimace from Lowe as he Wii bowls.

Not another gutter ball, damn it!

Holly and David yakkity yak about why she is bringing down Tommy and Rebecca shows up and, despite telling Justin she wouldn't interfere, she asks Holly to drop the charges ... not for Tommy but for her, so she can stay with Justin. No, no, no, Rebecca! That's not how you appeal to Holly! Didn't you see The Lord of the Rings? Use the promise of ultimate power to sway her to your side! Yes, first you have to find the one ring, but you'll still have a better shot.

Then we cut to Kevin and Sarah yakkity yak and Sarah gets off a good one liner when she says "You'd think I'd know what to wear to one of these "meet your half-sibling shindigs by now." Ha! I think the Walkers should all show up dressed like the Von Trapps! That would scare Ryan away but good.

Look! It's Scotty! He's here to deliver some totally pointless dialogue, but he looks cute doing it.

Luke: Ha, I win this week! I had fewer lines to memorize than you!

By now everyone has gathered to meet Ryan for dinner and I crack up when Ryan comes in and everyone in unison says "HI!" in the most fake voice ever. Later Ryan chats with Sarah and says "I guess history gets rewritten a lot down here, doesn't it." That's two great lines for Ryan. I'm starting to like this kid.

This whole dinner party is really only happening so Ryan can "accidentally" tell Nora about Tommy's arrest, which prompts Sally Field to deliver one of her great emotional scenes that includes her giving Tommy the slap we've all been dying to.

Do it again, but harder!

During this diatribe Tommy pretty much attacks everybody and says so many awful things that if he were my brother, I'm not sure we'd ever get past this. The Walkers should kick him out and be done with him, but I can already anticipate the big family dinner where they weepingly welcome him back to the fold.

Cut to Ryan and Rebecca yakkity yakking; Justin oversees this and suddenly thinks something is going between the two because that is so logical.

Then Nora and Saul yakkity yak, blaming each other for what happened with Tommy and accusing each other of being weak and dealing with lies. It's actually pretty uncomfortable and real, but again I'm left wondering how these people are going to actually get along the next time they get together.

You suck! No you suck!

And then Rebecca and Justin are fighting and wait, wait, are they going to break up? Yes! Yes! Rebecca storms out and goes to Holly and tells her to go after Tommy. Yay, things are looking up!

We cut back to Ryan and Nora who have a nice little scene together, but unfortunately it looks like Ryan is sticking around, meaning even less screentime for Kevin and Scotty. Oy.

Robert finally sits the kids down to tell them he wasn't just sick, but that his ticker gave out, he threw up a little and collapsed, but it's okay because he's fine now!

Robert: I'm fine kids, really. Let's ... ooh, what's that tingling in my arm? Can't breathe...
Kids: Yay, Daddy is dying after all just like ABC promised!

Both kids go "Boo!" about his being better and say they want a new daddy, and even suggest Rob's brother Chad Lowe as a replacement Showing she's very shrewd, the daughter (whose name I couldn't recall if my life depended on it) points out that ABC can get Chad for a fraction of the cost and with the family resemblance, viewers might not even notice the change.  Then the little boy points out they'd be just as happy for Kitty to stay single so she can sleep with a string of fading names brought in to prop up ratings. He even suggests bringing Steven Weber back, saying the potential conflict between Kitty and Sarah would be great.

Yeah, I was pretty bored this episode. Can you tell?

We end with Justin going to Sarah saying that all he could think about the night before was using and she invites him to move in. Finally, we cut to Ryan "dropping by" to check on Rebecca who had been this close to calling Justin. She invites him in and thus ends another episode of Brothers & Sisters Mostly Kevin and Scotty Free.

Yes, I'm a little bitter. But it's not just the lack of Kevin and Scotty that earns this episode a down arrow for me. It's because I hardly care about what is going on here. I feel like this Ojai Tommy/Holly thing has been playing on for far too long and, by the way, which of them am I supposed to be rooting for? I don't much like either one.

Sarah has drifted off into either hectoring people or trying to defend Tommy for some unknown reason, but at least that means she has mostly shut up about Greenotopia. Saul really just shows up to trade accusations with Nora. Robert is hardly at all likable these days as he was lying to Kitty left and right and the only reason he's even around is because he conveniently had a heart attack before she booted him out.

Frankly, beyond Nora and Scotty, there just aren't too many people on this show that I like right now. Maybe the title should be Brothers & Sisters & Other Assorted Annoying Pains in the Ass

I thought the episode was

I thought the episode was far better than the last week's 2 hour fiasco that focused on Robert McCallister's pseudo death.  But this episode isn't that great either...and it was mediocre at best, but at least B&S is presenting a whiff of a main plot brewing...a main plot that we haven't seen all season long.  So, it's like a nice change of pace.

Episode was maybe a B

While I didn't hate this episode, the recap was definitely better than the actual show.  (I have a cold right now, and when I saw the caption for the picture of Luke, it set off a laughing/coughing jag that nearly killed me.  Thanks a lot!)

I liked seeing Kevin be at least somewhat lawyer-ly again.  Yes, I am still so very, very bitter.

Rebecca's reply

I also kind of liked Rebecca's reply to Ryan saying, "Didn't you get the memo? It's take your illegitimate child to work day." - she says [paraphrase] "oh, I did that last year".

Michael will love that website

That's a pretty twisted product website to be marketed at straight dudes.  But anyone who has the hots for Scott as the centaur (I'm glancing your way, Jensen) will love the giveaways on the site.  You've got wallpapers of the Centaur, and in the most twisted possibility, they provide green screen footage of the Centaur from the commercial, so you can splice in your own video of you "doing things" with the Centaur.  Possibilities are endless.

Ryan's a gay vampire?

Is that his secret??

I didn't think the episode was THAT bad.  (I didn't think it was that good either)  I don't take away points for being Kevin/Scott lite, cause although I do really like Scotty, I can not stand Kevin.  One of my list favorite characters, right behind Robert, and Tommy.

Well, at least the Liveblog was fun

Michael kept us all entertained for the liveblog.  Otherwise, I may have fallen asleep during this one.  I'd like to think that they're writing their way out of a hole right now, solving problems so they can get back to the core of the show - the Walkers.  And they have several problems:

  1.  Balthazar has to go - he's been trouble on set and in his personal life.  They have to write him out carefully so as not to mess up the family dynamic.
  2. Walker Produce has to recede - the business needs to go very background, because once Tommy is gone, the need for the business to be so front and center is gone.
  3. They have to break up the Senator and Kitty - they have a new storyline coming for her, but the relationship has to end in a way that lets their values stand.
  4. Ryan became a necessary plot device to make Rebecca work out 2 years ago.  Now they have to integrate him, and create a new Walker from scratch, and most TV archetypes have been used up on this show.  Won't be simple.

Once they clear the path of all these left over issues (most shows would just dump the issues without ceremony, I have to credit the show with attempting to write their way out), maybe we'll have room for Scotty, Kevin, and Saul.

Unfortunately, when Tommy heads to jail, Sarah will go back to attend to Ojai.  This is how the writers/creators are keeping the Ojai channels opened and Holly relevant still in the show.

I wish they would give up on keeping Patricia on as a regular and just make the character recurring and let Ojai die so the family can move on with better stories.

Holly is only "relevant"

Holly is only "relevant" because she's married to Ken Olin.

I cannot stand the woman even though the writers are trying to make us care.  It's impossible to do so, not even in an "I love to hate her Alexis Carrington" sort of way.

Jamie's picture

Holly is relevant

She's the main antagonist for the Walker clan.  Take her away, and what's left??  Watching the Walkers fight with each other isn't that interesting.  Watching Robert & Kitty, even less interesting.

Absolutely.  And, let's

Absolutely.  And, let's face it, in this situation, Holly is 100% right!  She DID try to live up to her end of the bargain... she was targeted by Tommy because he changed his mind and thought she MIGHT renege.  He did what his father did; when the going gets tough, CHEAT.

If this leads to more conflict between Holly and the Walkers, I say bring it on.

And, hey, if that means we see more of Beartastic Ken Olin, I'm all for that, too!

I'm fast forwarding even faster now

The only fun left in this show comes from reading your recaps. I've hit fast forward for about 60% of the recent episodes so thanks for the service you provide until (possibly) the writers come up with an episode worth watching all the way through.

Not looking forward to the inevitable Justin/Rebecca/Ryan triangle. This has become a soap with no bubbles.

Unwatchable without TiVo

Honestly, I'm starting to wonder why I bother.

Yet another disastrous let's-meet-somebody-new dinner party. *YAWN*

Justin's a loser for letting Rebecca get all righteous on him. What could possibly make that little airhead expect that any of the Walkers would feel any respect at all for Holly?  Because she helped "save Ojai"?!

Let's recap:  The only reason Holly isn't living in a dirty rental and working as a waitress somewhere is because William generously rewarded all those decades of hard work on her back and knees by giving her a massive inheritance which, mysteriously, Nora never challenged in court the way almost any widow in the real world would have. Holly then went on to manipulate Tommy into going into the winery business when she couldn't sucker the Ojai board into it. Given her total lack of business experience (her sole resume entry being 20+ years as a professional kept whore) it's unlikely she would have been able to get the investors without him. Then when Saul screwed up she capitalized on the resulting mayhem to effectively takeover Ojai.

Somehow, in Rebecca's twisted worldview this makes Holly deserving of the Walker's undying gratitude and admiration.  Then again, she would think so since like her mother she's stumbled into a career she's unqualified for thanks to the patronage of someone else, her mother in this case.

This only serves to lower my opinion of Rebecca, dirty little scamp, and Justin, pathetic whipped loser who could have, and should have, recited everything I wrote above rather than let her get on her high horse.

For that matter, I want to see someone out and say all that to Holly herself!

Robert is a dead man walking as far as I'm concerned.  I couldn't be more over him and now really want to see the screen time he devours taken up by someone else. But I guess Rob Lowe hasn't got any gigs lined up so he's going nowhere.

Ryan is pretty, but almost too waifish for me to get into. Nora needs to feed him more, since obviously George Lafferty didn't.  But where's the drama with him?  He's going to come between Justin and Rebecca?  Like I should care? I'm already sick to death of seeing Rebecca and Justin go at it so much when Kevin and Scotty barely even touch each other!

Speaking of whom, it was nice to see Kevin take a hard line on Tommy. There's irony here. Tommy took a hardline on Justin's drug habit, so it's only fair that everyone else should take one on Tommy's criminal behavior. Kevin is the only one showing sense here.  Sadly, other than that and his oddly chaste "marriage" to Scotty (we already know they sleep in pajamas, twin beds are just around the corner) he has very little to do.

Sarah crusading to save Tommy is just flat-out weird. After the raw deal he rolled out to her and Kevin you would think she would be willing to let him in lie in the bed he made for himself. He wanted to be William Jr and have an Ojai free of other Walkers and he got it. The old Sarah would have given him the verbal smackdown. I don't like this "kinder & gentler" Season 3 Sarah.

Sally Field does emotional outburst like nobody else, but to be honest I'm getting bored with it.  Aside from the slap I think she went off more on Saul than on Tommy.  Then again Nora has always had a tendency to vent randomly.

This one is a Down Arrow for me as well. While it wasn't horrible, it also wasn't interesting. Something that is becoming increasingly common with B&S episodes this season.

I LIKED this episode

I thought there was good "couple tension" going around and that kept my interest.  Sally Field was magnificent as always, and I'm intrigued by Ryan (as they want me to be).  My least favorite character is Holly (and next least is Tommy) and therefore I wish they would let Ojai go or at least those folks.  I was glad to see Scotty and Kevin acting like an ordinary married couple, even if in the background in this episode, and I know they'll bring them to the foreground sometime soon.

I wanted to post today in order to provide a bit of balance to the negativity going around.  We're all welcome to our comments, for sure, but I hope there's someone else out there that sees things on the brighter side as I do.

You're not alone.  I still

You're not alone.  I still enjoy this show very much, and find each episode to be very compelling.  There's plenty of people on the show I don't like (Senator Douchebag, Tommy and now Ryan...) but that's what adds to the conflict.

Overall I think the show is solidly written.  It sparks debate and conversation and walks the line between art and trash.  That's entertainment.

Have Tivo; still not watching

Did ABC mix up the writing staffs of B&S, Desperate Housewives, and Ugly Betty to come up with storylines that are absolutely impossible to believe, not to mention keep up with? Thanks for the fun recaps, but this show has completely lost my interest.  The only non-despicable character, Scotty, has gone missing and the rest of the bunch gets more dysfunctional by the week.  The only saving grace about last night's episode was that it was only one hour.  Still waiting for those oft-promised deaths...

Sally Field

While the episode was only above average at best, Sally Field's performance in this episode was magnificent. Should she get another Emmy nomination for her work on this show (even after ATAS changed the voting process yet again) this should be her submission to the Emmy voters.

I love Sally Field.  She

I love Sally Field.  She could read the phonebook and make me listen.  I love that she's "real."  She's got the gray hair and the crow's feet that says "hey, I've lived a good life."

My ONE complaint (and it's a very minor one) is her tendency to cover her mouth after she slaps someone or says something she regrets.  It's like a Pavlovian response.  Just something I've noticed.
