"Brothers & Sisters" Episode 306: “Bakersfield”. Or as I call it, "Fight! Fight!"
Well, that was quite the episode. Nice to see that Kevin can give as good as he gets. And I've certainly wanted to strangle Tommy more than once. Of course, that's true of most of the Walkers!
Yes, I know a lot of folks were hoping for a Nora/Holly smackdown, but frankly, I thought it was nice to see a gay guy get to mix it up a little bit. Not that violence is ever the solution to sibling squabbles. But what was Rebecca thinking in inviting Kevin and Tommy to Justin's celebration? Oy vey! Naturally, Nora was her usual meddlesome self, Saul didn't have much to do except not go to Bakersfield, and Scotty was nowhere to be seen. Nowhere! Not okay! As usual Sally Field led the field as far as the acting went, but the Robert/Kitty storyline? Bleah.... But what did you think of Will McCormac, last seen playing sexually confused on Dirt? What I want to know is who he pissed off in the wardrobe department although he didn't look to bad in that towel. What did you think of the episode? Submitted by on Mon, 2008-11-03 02:01. |

Will in the towel!
That was the best part of the episode. Otherwise, it was a rather predictable and dull episode--Nora/Kitty go on the road, so naturally they fight and embarrass themselves; Kevin/Tommy humiliate themselves; etc.
I'm really getting frustrated at the lack of airtime for Scotty; essentially, why do Robert and Rebecca appear in every episode, even though they're not blood relations, but Scotty (or, for that matter, Julia) is not integrated into the drama? This blows. And it needs to change.

i can't answer for....
i can't answer for the character of Rebecca, but Rob Lowe is a 'bigger' star, so of course he is going to get a lot of screen time, whether we like it or not.
I feel awful for the actress who plays Julia. Whenever she is in an episode, she seems to have 4 lines and then, whoosh.....that was that. Blink and you miss it.
I think Scotty's airtime isn't so bad.....i mean, he gets more than Julia. I think this show really just needs to figure out how to even out screen time between it's characters, it being such a large cast and all.
Re: Scotty
I agree it's not equitable, but I wouldn't hold my breath over the idea that Scotty or Julia will get as much screentime as Rob Lowe. Simply ain't gonna happen.
Likewise, although Rebecca is now not a blood relation, she was introduced into the show as a much more integral character, and seeing as she appeals to youth demo, she ain't going anywhere either. (I'll spare you my rant about how awful it was for them to de-Walker her character.)
Well......
I don't expect we'll see as much of Scotty as we do Rebecca and Robert simply because those characters are more intergral to the show and have more ties to the canvas and relationships outside of their partner than Scotty does. Scotty is much like Julia (or Joe, an ex-Walker spouse) in that he only exists in relation to Kevin. Those characters never had their 'own' story or anything like that.... and it'll be the same with Scotty.
In terms of the episode itself, not even the shirtless guy made it particularly good. I hated that the show went to one it's standby's: the bickering family ruin someone else's moment to shine. Kevin had legit reasons to be ticked at Tommy as his decision to fire Kevin led to a major change in Kevin's life and the show reduced it to pratfalls. I also had a problem with Nora telling that poor man about his dead wife's affair with her husband (not to mention that his son isn't his!). That scene didn't ring true and it seemed out of character for Nora to be so selfish and unfeeling towards this man. And Kitty and Robert's baby makin' storyline is sooooooooo boring, though I will say that having the birth mother turn out to be a person of color is an interesting twist. I wonder if they'll actually adopt the child or the show will find a lame way to get them out of it.
de-Walkering
UGH don't even get me started on the de-Walkering of Rebecca. I will admit that there was obvious on-screen chemistry between the actors that portray Justin and Rebecca. However, de-Walkering the character makes most of the first two seasons null and void. It was a weird decision that I don't understand. I heard a rumor that the actors are dating in real-life so I'm sure that influenced the writers, but I think just to nullify the background of the character was a bad move. I also think it diminished Holly's (P. Wettig) purpose on the show. Her background was that she has this big important love affair with the Walker dad but now apparently he was sexing everyone. I think it really decredits the stories that were already in place.
That's my opinion anyway.

Loved this Episode of Brothers and Sisters
I come from a big family that is ALL ABOUT secrets and they always come on in the end and folks get way more hurt than they woud have if the truth had been known in the beginning.
When my dad died in 2001, folks started spewing truth like their life depended on it and it was a nightmare but in the end, I know we were all better for it (even if it felt like hell at the time)
I really loved the way the family pulled together.
I loved seeing Justin taking charge.
I loved seeing Rebecca stand up for Justin and I think their romance is very sweet and nurturing.
I could always have more Scotty and less Robert but the primary target of this show is white, middle-classed straight folks so I don't really expect any episode to delve into Scotty and Kevin's relationship as much as I'd want or think it should.
Sad, but true.
Nevertheless, I really loved this episode.
