BET's New Web Series "Buppies" Includes Gay Storyline

Robin Thede as Priscilla and Preston Davis as Eliot

As any regular reader of AfterElton.com already knows, one of the biggest issues we have when it comes to gay visibility in popular culture is the lack of gay men of color in our popular culture. That makes me especially happy to report that BET's new webseries Buppies includes a gay storyline — and one that the network is trying to get the word out about.

Buppies (a spin on the word "yuppie") follows five African-American friends trying to make their way in black Hollywood. One of those friends is Eliot, a sports agent and the "perfect boyfriend", who is dating Priscilla, a magazine editor.

SPOILER ALERT!

Three of the webisodes have aired so far and in the third we meet NFL football star Truth who appears to have some unfinished business with Eliot as you can see here.

And the most recent clip posted today, takes things one step further.

What's most surprising here is that it's the football player who is going after the guy when it's usually the other way around. I can't imagine Truth is actually out, but that would certainly be interesing and hopefully we'll find out down the road.

Preston Davis plays Eliot and in this clip he discusses the role and the show.

Wouldn't it be nice if the webseries were to take off and become an actual series on BET?

I'm sure it won't come as much of a surprise to find out that Buppies is the creation of an out gay man. That would be Julian Breece who along with producer Aaliyah Williams generated good buzz at this year's Sundance festival with their debut film The Young & The Evil.
