Daniel Craig says no same-sex shagging for James Bond

Bad news Bond fans: in an interview posted today on the Guardian film blog, Daniel Craig took some readers' questions about the upcoming Bond movie Quantum of Solace including this one:

Question: Over the years, we've seen Bond shag many beautiful birds along the way. Do you think Bond will ever shag a bloke? (from Paul1970)

Daniel Craig: This is that question that keeps eternally coming up. No. Kill him and then seduce him [laughs] but not seduce him. It's never been on the agenda and we've never had a discussion about it. It's not something that I desire or want. No.

I don't quite follow the "kill him and then seduce him ... but not seduce him" part. Sounds like we're talking about necrophilia. And I don't even mind — much — that this 145th installment of Bond will not include anything gay with James, but I don't get that they've never even had a discussion about it. Really? We are talking a franchise that has done about everything under the sun and needs to stay relevant and fresh, and having Bond have a same-sex romance or encounter never even came up?

As for Craig, clearly when he says it's not something "he wants" he is referring to what he wants for the character of Bond as he's played gay before including in Infamous (pictured below).

Well, I guess we can still hope for a moment to top Craig's strutting from the ocean in the last flick. Or his nude torture scene. Say, how about a nude stroll out of the ocean?

And thanks to AfterElton.com reader Joseph for bringing this to our attention!

As a life-long Bond fan...

...at the very least, it would be nice if one of Bond's allies turned out to be a gay man, and 007 is totally ok with it--we've had a few too many gay villains (notably, Wint and Kidd in Diamonds Are Forever). I never expected Bond himself to have sex with or romance another guy--even the character in Ian Fleming's novels is hopelessly straight.

So Craig is actually right about Bond. And, yeah, he's played gay before, and if he's still attached to The Memoirs of Hadrian, then he'll be playing gay again.

Joseph,

I see you all the time and I've always wondered...who are the men in your icon? O_o

The men kissing in my icon...

As an avid Bond fan...

...I think it would really unnerve me to see the character of Bond with a man instead of a woman. I'm gay, but it would just change Bond too drastically. In my eyes, he's always represented this ridiculously accelerated heterosexuality and it just seems wrong to change that.

But if you want to see Daniel Craig kissing a guy, watch Infamous, and Enduring Love (where he snogs Rhys Ifans). He also plays a gay man in Love is the Devil: A Study for the Portrait of Francis Bacon. While there's no kissing in it, him and Derek Jacobi have some violent sex scenes.

And lets hope that the rumors he'll play Hadrian is true! THAT will be awesome.

Hunh?! I though HE was the one who suggested it?.. Oh well, it was gossip very probably.

A shame really.

Daniel Craig also played gay in the play "Angels In America" (in 1993 in London). There is a scene I think, where he is in bed with Jason Isaacs.

NO. WAY. That is the hottest thing I have ever heard in my life. I would cut off my pinky finger to see that. Jason Isaacs...is the sexiest man EVAR.

But when it comes to Daniel Craig's quote about having "interest" in a gay Bond, it was waaay misconstrued. A reporter asked jokingly if James Bond would have a gay love interest in the new movie, and Daniel replied with a nice "sure, why not" type quote (which I think is a lot nicer than being like "Helllllll no!"). People took it seriously and misinterpreted it.

Fuego, what can I say. You are right! ABSOLUTELY right! I had a picture of that scene once - found a link posted on either Jason's or Craig's IMdB board, but I checked, all the posts from before May 2008 or so, are gone (why?!). I saved it on my PC at the time, but I recently got a new one and don't have the picture anymore. It's probably on some USB key.. or on one of my Photobucket accounts..

I totally beat myself up over this, because I lived in the UK from 1991 to 1996 and only about an hour away from London by train. I did make the journey several times for plays, concerts and opera, but I did not hear about this play!!!!! *angrywithmyself* I remember going to the play "My Night with Reg" around that time, or possibly a little latter, but still. I don't understand how I could have missed it. Especially since I've been a fan of Jason Isaacs ever since I saw him in "Capital City".. I even once contacted the National Theatre in London to ask about a taping, but they said they only started taping plays from 1995 on (or so) and referred my back to the mini-series "Angels in America" with Al Pacino [which I loved, of course! but it's not what I wanted].

Yeah, I'm guessing that's what happend, but still, a real shame! Not that I want James Bond to turn gay - I don't think it will happen, ever and I don't think it would be a success. But we now know how Craig's Bond has been roughed up and I think Craig's Bond would be capable of anything (including getting intimate with a man), just to serve another purpose.. *wishfulthinking*

*sigh*

That's incredibly depressing. I searched and searched and searched, but I didn't find much in regards to Jason and Daniel...

In this interview, when asked about his favorite on-screen kiss, Jason Isaacs said "They're all free kisses and for a man who has been in a relationship for 17 years they're marvelous! I love them all, even snogging Daniel Craig in the play Angels in America was a free kiss!"

Also, I found these pictures of Jason with Stephen Dillane from this website (but none of Daniel Craig, at all):

There was also this website, which had some pictures but none of Jason and Daniel.

This upsets me. I want to find that picture! Maybe I'll ask the Monkey if he can do some poking around, so I can go to my grave in peace. XD

Times have changed

MI5 or MI6, dont remember exactly, is activly recruting gay personel and making sexuality a non issue.

If the franchise intends to change with the times, like they have been doing lately, they are going to have to reflect those changes in policy.

It doesnt have to be Bond, but I would like to see some inclusion. And on the good side.

LOVE Bruno Todeschini!

He's equally fablous in Patrice Chereau's Queen Margot, Son Frere, and Those Who Love Me Can Take the Train. And Rivette's Va Savoir too.

Yep!

Mentioned it before, but Bruno Todeschini (also) plays gay in "De Soie et de Cendre" (a two part mini).

IIRC, there was talk (before Pierce Brosnan got cast) of Bond being relaunched as female (Sharon Stone) or gay (Rupert Everett).

Gotta wonder how long before Bond runs out of women. Will he take up with Dame Judi or some bored housewife?

geekluve's picture

How about an alternative

a gay bond scene would be too awkward for the character even though it'd be hot to see that it's just not for bonds character. however i doubt that a spy has never had to play gay or that there has never been a gay spy. so rather than making already established characters have gay encounters, which when said aloud is just contrived, why not create a fully developed gay spy of our own. it's a challenge that should be met. it's doubtful that body else is unsatisfied with the lack of gay spies in movies and books or whatever.

Bond & Cable & Publicists & Gay Projects - Oh my...

Well at least a person knows to save the cost of a ticket to this Bond film and just wait for it to come out on cable where no doubt Spike tv will play it over and over again until you wish you'd fallen into that piranha-filled lagoon while taking the white feline with you.

Also, rumors of actors being attached to "future, yet-to-secure-financing-for-a-budget gay projects" always crop up whenever they have a "non-gay, already in production or post-production project" coming out. You'd think publicists and marketers would and could come up with a new tactic for trying to convince gay people to go to non-gay films.

I can understand why they want a gay audience. If just a fraction of our community goes to the movie, let's say for example, if just 80 million gay people around the world go at $10 a person, that gives a filmmaker a whopping $800 million dollar blockbuster. So, you'd really think they'd put some decent gay characters and storylines in more films. Perhaps, someday...

you say that as if gay

you say that as if gay people only see gay movies if that were true then gay people would NEVER see a movie

Too much of a retcon

Bond has never been presented as even remotely gay or bi in book or movie, so I think it would be too much of a stretch for me.  It wouldn't be the same character.

This is not to say that I wouldn't like to see a gay action hero, or maybe a gay 00x agent in a Bond film (as long as he wasn't there to be gratuitously killed).  I think a gay ally would be cool, again as long as they weren't some cartoonish stereotype or a red shirt.

As for Craig's statements, we must keep in mind that he's the actor, not the writer or director.  While he might personally be okay with playing Bond in a same-sex love scene, that doesn't mean the people writing the movies are going to put one into the script.

Michael Jensen's picture

But Bond is a superspy who is able to do

anything. I fail to see why, as part of a mission, he has to seduce a man. It doesn't make him gay, he doesn't have to fall in love, but just have it be part of his mission sort of like Bruce Willis did in The Jackal, but maybe without having to kill him.

As for the argument that this was never part of Bond, that doesn't work for me at all. Hollywood constantly updates and reinvents franchises to stay with the times. When Bond was created, gay issues and our understanding of human sexuality were very different than they are now.

Psionycx's picture

The Jackal is soooo not a good example

Aside from having been blatantly homophobic, it just fed into the idea that sexuality is something people just choose to direct any way they see fit.  Bond's seductions have historically been depicted as genuine attraction and not just him forcing himself to play a role.  This is a leading reason why Bond Girls are usually hot starlets.  The whole Bond persona is built around his hyper-horny love of beautiful women, whether they're heroines or enemy spies.

Bond isn't just a genre, he's a specific character and to me this kind of change would be a big retcon that would change the fundamentals of this character and basically change him into a different one. That just doesn't work for me personally. I'm okay with introducing new gay characters into media but if someone is going to retcon an existing one then there needs to be at least some historical basis in the character or else it just seems like a lack of creativity, reusing someone else's character's name, but changing the rest of them.

Fuego's picture

On top of that...

You know how the gay community ends up really upset or disappointed (for good reason) when a gay character, whether it be from a book or from history, is de-gayed for the big screen? Wouldn't it be kind of the same thing, but reversed, with James Bond?

Insideguy's picture

Bonding with Bond

Call me weird but from DR. NO to QUANTUM OF SOLACE I have always liked my Bond straight. To me he has always the epitome of cool.  I have never wanted to sleep with straight men (ok, maybe I did before I knew there were other avalable gay men in my smalltown teenage world) and I don't want to live in GAYTOWN.  I want a world of access and acceptance, cohesive and cooperative.

A good storyline for the Bond canon would be a story where James works with another 00 agent who is gay and very cool too.  It should not be a traditional story of gay/straight adversaries trying to get along.  It should be a given that the other agent is gay and that they are working together with mutual respect. It could say a lot about how gay men can be part of any world and that sexuality has noting to do with ability.

That is stupid, they need

That is stupid, they need to get with the 21st century, James Bond needs to evolve. Honestly, I'd like to see more characters with a more fluid sexuality. They also need to realise that a lot of women would think James Bond was a lot  hotter if he was bi, then women and gay men would really like the movie, and that's like 60% of the population.

Seriously, straight he's a womanizing pig who takes advantage of women and lets woman take advantage of him because he's thinking with an organ ther than his brain. Not that appealing to girls. Bi, he's just an equal oportunity slut, and I think girls canlive with that. Because a lot of girls would think it very hot if he made out with another guy. Seriously more slutty bisexual heros, not because bisexual guys are sluts, but heroes seem to be. Like James Bond, total slut whore.

Although I'd also be fine with another secret agent character who was gay or bi, that would also be cool.
