"As the World Turns" and "American Idol" updatesTerri Colombino, Austin Peck
Two "breaking" news items just crossed my desk about shows we have been discussing in depth of late. First, Out.com just posted their contribution to the Nuke coverage currently bursting forth from the media with comments from As the World Turns's Austin Peck (Brad) and Terri Colombino (Katie). The ATWT duo get up to the sort of erotic shenanigans that fans of Nuke can only dream of locking lips, legs, and other matching body parts. Colombino says she and Peck won't suffer the same fate with their sex life because "I have a vagina." And Peck says producers were scared off because Luke and Noah are two men. He also boasted he had a vagina as well. Okay, not really, but this is a soap opera so maybe that is next. Out also quotes an unnamed actor who says the producers are in a panic about the protest and rethinking their decision to keep Nuke kiss-less. Unless they're thinking about getting rid of Nuke altogether. Nelson Branco, who wrote the article for Out, concludes by suggesting that maybe the producers will end the whole controversy by just getting rid of Nuke altogether. Well, I guess that covers all the bases!
TVGuide.com just reported that American Idol's pole dancing contestant David Hernandez won't be dumped for giving dudes lapdances. Says AI executive producer Ken Warwick, "The truth is we're never judgmental about what people do to earn a living. They've gotta put food in people's mouths.” Ken goes on to say that if David had done some sort of porn, then the outcome might be different. He also adds that the American public might not be so forgiving. "If the public doesn't like him, then they'll get rid of him." I guess this means Hillary and Barack aren't the only ones with their careers at stake with the voting public. Speaking of Hernandez, no doubt AfterElton.com's resident Idol experts Jim Verraros and Penny Frulla will have more to say on the lap dancing brouhaha in their next Idol Chat with Jim & Penny video blog. Gee....
What a surprise that ATWT is rethinking their decision!
But I love TC's comments about the whole thing. I'm only glad I wasn't drinking someone when I read it otherwise I'd need a new computer screen cause I laughed so loud!
I gotta add though that all the kisses in the world won't mean much if Luke and Noah don't get an interesting story, at least to me. Yes, they do have a story, but whether it's interesting or not is up for grabs. But one battle at a time! Sadly, campagining for a better plot won't get you much press. But I suppose you have to start somewhere and use whatever tool you have at your disposal!
As the World Terds
Holy crap
No....
wow...
how shocking, except...NOT.
sad that pressure has led to a push for something as simple as a kiss. a kiss.
did they not know about the success of Brokeback Mountain or QAF?
TSK.
Did I miss something?

I didn't see any mention of this in the article at all. Did I miss something?
Also, thanks, OUT for joining the party. God bless the gay press.
My mistake. The Out
Thanks Michael! Sorry I
Thanks Michael! Sorry I missed that.
Of course nixing the storyline altogether is a logical response to a mountain of free publicity. I really wouldn't put anything past them. All over a measly kiss.
Originally I thought this must all be about their fear of alienating loyal viewers, etc., but given the goldminethat they are potentially tossing away over a kiss, I would bet there are at least a few people in charge who are big ol' homphobes themselves.
Nothing to apologize for. I
Actually...
The OUT article ends with an exec at a rival network talking about creating a gay storyline to compete with ATWT:
Hopefully P&G is taking note. They have everything they need to tell a good gay story ALREADY, including two actors with phenomenal chemistry. All they lack is the resolve to do it. Maybe all this attention will convince them...
P&G has a simple decision to make.
They can either stay in the 1950s and just have an audience of old ladies in Iowa or enter the 21st century and cultivate an audience of young viewers longing to see their own lives portrayed and reflected.
To me, the choice is simple, as Richard quotes from the article, rival networks are enviously watching all this publicity for ATWT and wishing people were talking about their soap opera the way people are talking about ATWT. So, before One Life to Live or Days of Our Lives steals their thunder, P&G should just go all out and have our boys kiss, make love, get involved in a romantic triangle with Matt or Casey or Gray or whoever...just do it, do it well, and watch those younger viewers tune in in greater and greater numbers.
Oh, and I am so glad to know that Terri Colombino has a vagina. That will have to be one of the great quotes of all time.

Just for the record
I'm from Iowa and I know plenty of old ladies who couldn't care less if these two guys were kissing.
:)
Did they really need to blind that?
ATWT
"A veteran actor on the show"
That would be totally in character for Liz Hubbard, except...
...the article cites the veteran actor specifically as a "he." And the way "he" speaks makes me think it's actually Michael Park (Jack).

CBS and its censors suck
None of the the previous attempts to introduce gay characters into a soap has worked out from Ryan Phillipe as Billy Douglas on One Life To Live in 1992 to Jeffey Carlson as the transexual Zarf on ALL MY CHILDREN. No gay characters survive very long. Those values groups are a well oiled machine that can swing into action all too quickly. Soaps are a huge profit center for the networks so when their advertisers are threatened, they take tho lower road with the offenders. It is interesting that there is no date to prove that these threatened boycotts actually take place, or that they work.
It is similar to the theory that gays in the military would commit treason to hide their sexuality. In the whole of history there is one example of a gay man commiting treason because of his sexuality. If you want to go to Netflix or Amazon to view the film, COLONEL REIDEL, with Klaus Maria Brandauer, about this Hungarian officer. That's right no American gay service member at any level has sold out to protect their own lives. Eat that Dick Cheney and Donald Rumsfeld!
Colonel Redl
Actually, according to historians, Col. Redl's motive for giving military secrets to the Russians wasn't necessarily because he was gay but because he was greedy.
I guess I always remain hopelessly optimistic; I know there's a lot of doom and gloom from posters here regarding ATWT, but the media blitz that many of us fans have initiated has clearly rattled TPTB at P&G (and I think it's become clear that it's P&G that is censoring the kisses, not CBS) and that they realize they have to acknowledge it and move ahead. It will happen, I believe it.

Think about it
Let's take a step back from Luke, Noah and the kiss. Is it just me or is what has been accomplished not important. Whatever happens the on-line community succeeded in bringing this to the mainstream media. They heard us. We have been demanding answers and coverage and we have gotten it. I hope that it doesn't have a negative impact on the storyline but I think it is great that we found a way to make ourselves heard. The CNN coverage was great. You've got a conservative talk show host saying what sounds to me like the gay story is okay but having them kiss would be "pushing our agenda". He then says that the site lukeandnoahfans.com was setup just to protest the lack of kissing. Obviously he has no idea what he is talking about. The silly CNN entertainment talking head makes it sound like all the soap fans are in an uproar over this. I think it's great that they don't pin it down to only gay fans. If you haven't checked it out on youtube yet you should do so.

The real takeaway for me
Is that The Blonde Obstacle has revealed exactly how it is that she has ensnared Austin From Days.
Now I just have to find one of these "vagina" things that she speaks of and he's mine!
It's a tad more complicated than that "InsideGuy"
If you take a good look at what's come to be known as "The McCarthy Era" you'll note that "anti-communism" takes the form of an anti-gay witchhunt - conducted largely by closet queens (ie. Joe McCarthy, Roy Cohn, J. Edgar Hoover.) Whittaker Chambers was gay, and Alger Hiss was a closet case. In his invaluable Digressions on Some Poems by Frank O'Hara, Joe Lesuer reveals that he (Le Seuer) once slept with Alger Hiss' boyfriend (!)
The British spies who defected to the Soviet Union were gay. Alan Bates gave the performance of his life as Guy Burgess in An Englishman Abroad, John Schlesinger's great telefilm scripted by the peerless Alan Bennett. And that's not to mention Another Country with Rupert Everett (back when he was actually interesting as an actor) as the young Guy Burgess, smooching the babe-a-licious Cary Elwes.
