Dirt comes back, Magneto the movie, Reichen sings, and more

One Thomas Cannon has just been discovered as the 18th century's Oscar Wilde, writing such inflammatory things about same-sex love he had to flee the country lest he lose his head

One of my least favorite shows from this past season--FX's Dirt--is coming back for a second season. Oh, joy. If you remember, Courtney Cox's character had a creepy gay or bi brother who got involved with a closeted action star, then tried to blackmail him or something. I've tried to block the whole thing out as the show is just that icky. I just pray the show doesn't bring back the gay brother or any other gay character. I do not want to to follow it!

FX also announced that Eddie Izzard's The Riches is coming back as well. That show features a cross-dressing adolescent apparently based on Izzard himself.

Here is a very funny bit lampooning "journalist" Perez Hilton. It may not be entirely safe for work.

In our interview with Sir Ian McKellen last year, he told us he hoped there would be a Magneto movie. Looks like it might be happening after all, but unfortunately without McKellen (or Patrick Stewart). Instead it will focus on Magneto and Dr. Xavier as youths. Out director Bryan Singer isn't involved so it's hard to know if new director David Goyer and writer Sheldon Turner will keep up the X-Men's gay subtext.

This is a rather interesting clip of Reichen Lehmkuhl being interviewed by another male model about why folks don't take them seriously as advocates. Frankly, I expected a lot of whining, but Reichen actually says he brought this on himself by being so willing to use body to get attention. Interesting stuff. Oh, and he sings a little, too. Not that he's going to win American Idol or anything.

    Ugh

If this is not more example of just how anti-gay FX is, I don't know what would be. This worthless show had a gay man who was not only self-loathing (running back to women every time he had a problem in his life), but also childish, self-righteous, and ultimately, a crazy stalker of his own sister. Courtney Cox should be ashamed. She had nothing but gay-baiting and cheap taunting, against both gays and lesbians, on her show the entire season.

    Are we sure McKellen isn't

Are we sure McKellen isn't going to be in it? I heard that he and Stewart would be in it, and special effects would be used to make them look younger, like how they did at the beginning of X3.

    It sure doesn't

    sound like it. :-(

    Reichen

Good for him. Finally, he acknowledges that he's a whore...sorry, famewhore.

And I know that he can't help it that his voice sounds that way, but Ben Patrick Johnson bugs after a while with that super-modulated voice.  It's like listening to the movie trailer VO forever.

    Magneto & Ian McKellen

According to this article (http://www.mania.com/54496.html?fark=true) Ian McKellen will be reprising his role as Magneto. Don't know if they'll be making him younger through special effects (I kind of hope not) or if it will be told in flashbacks.

They will be. It'll be like

They will be. It'll be like the beginning of X3, which took place when Jean Grey was a child and featured a younger Xavier and Magneto going to see her.

    David Goyer

David Goyer's too macho to allow any gay subtext in this movie. A line of dialogue from his "Blade" screenplay (spoken by the hero) was: "I got news for you, butt-boy. You're already dead." The line was cut from the film, but still...

Also, McKellen might only in the film for a couple of "present day" scenes. Most of the film will be seen in flashback with younger actors.

    I'm sure a different actor

I'm sure a different actor will be used for any scenes of Magneto as a child/teenager. But any scenes as a young adult will be played by Ian McKellen; special effects will be used to make him look younger, like they did in X3.

    Dirt

I liked Dirt! I didn't find anything especially homophobic in its content. And FX isn't all gaybashing - Nip/Tuck is incredibly liberal and progressive - Liz is lesbian, Kimber is bi, Quentin was bi (albeit a serial killer too), Christian and Matt both have big gay sides, and it's written by a gay man. Dirt, I just loved Courtney's character, really.

    Ben Patrick Johnson

Thanks for featuring BPJ today. I wasn't a subscriber of his until today and I'm glad I found him. Hearing other voices is important if you insist on having a rounded view. If we only listen to that which gives us constant comfort, doesn't that just make us the same as the Neo-Con-Xtians that would see us with no rights at all?
