Pro-Gay "Dragon Age" + Anti-Gay Orson Scott Card = WTF?

While I haven't yet had a chance to play Dragon Age (hey, I just finished BioShock over Christmas), my significant other (aka The Flying Monkey) has been loving it and I've eagerly been looking forward to playing it. Or at least I was. My anticipation has been greatly reduced by the news that none other than raging uber homopobe Orson Scott Card has been tagged to write the comic book version of the game for IDW Publishing. Ugh, I think I just threw up a little.

Hmm, given that Card has notoriously said he would understand if folks wanted to violently overthrow the U.S. government should same-sex marriage ever become the law of the land, I'm guessing the comic book version will be as straight and narrow as a ruler.

I'd like to think that IDW (and Dragon Age's creator BioWare who likely licensed the game to IDW) is unaware of Card's homophobic beliefs and wouldn't have given him the job if they had known. If not, they are hardly the first publisher to do business with Card despite his virulent bigotry. And IDW is certainly within their rights to say Card the bigot should be separated from Card the writer, but the irony of hiring Card for this particular adaptation is particularly revolting. And I'm more than happy to call them out on it.

I reached out IDW for a comment and will you keep posted about what I hear back. But don't hold your breath. While a publisher would likely be unable to get away hiring a racist as hateful as Card is homophobic, it's been a whole lot harder to get anyone to care about Card's homophobia.
