Ellen has Portia visit her show and quietly subverts AmericaIf you can't see it here, you can also try watching on Veoh
If you missed the last two episodes of The Ellen DeGeneres Show, you also missed a quiet revolution in how It's been said in the past that Ellen kept her "gayness" hidden on her show, but those days are long gone as these two clips clearly demonstrate. In them, Ellen calls Portia her wife, repeatedly discusses their marriage, acts silly, shows wedding photos and even plays The Newlywed Game with a straight couple from the audience. Pretty amazing, no? Millions and millions of average Americans watched those clips and in the process were steadily desensitized to the issue of gay marriage by seeing how utterly normal gay couples are. Actually, let's make that lesbian couples. As fantastic as Ellen is, I think gay men need this same kind of visibility and find it ironic that while we have so much more visibility when it comes to television characters than do our lesbian counterparts, we lag so far behind when it comes to real people such as Ellen, Rosie O'Donnell, Suze Orman andRachel Maddow. And that's important because, frankly, Americans are so much more frightened of gay male sexuality than they are lesbian. Here's hoping someday Neil Patrick Harris gets his own talkshow and invites David Burtka on to discuss their getting married!
BTW, don't you love that eHarmony is the sponsor for that episode of Ellen? Submitted by on Tue, 2009-03-17 07:50. |

Name One Good Marriage
I loved both segments
I love how Ellen is able to beam her life into middle America, and nobody is shocked, they just cheer her on and get up and dance with her. She completely subverts everything the AFA says about us in such a casual and fun way that she may be the best warrior we have for visibility. People who citicize her for not being more in front of the issue don't get what a powerful statement she makes just by being herself, and how she'd be so much less effective is she preached every day.
I think America could easily welcome NPH into their homes everyday if he chose to do it. There's something about the fact that we knew him as Doogie and loved him, and he's avoided the pitfalls of the child star that make him relatable. I just think he's having too much fun doing all his on little projects to settle into the grind of a daily chat fest.
Eharmony...
Yeah, I see that some people in the gay community are a bit baffled at eharmony being the sponsor. some are saying ellen should've known better....
i personally doubt ellen even knows much about eharmony and its history....someone probably just came to her, suggested it and she said okay.
EH
Probably my favorite couple ever, ngl.
I've been eagerly awaiting this interview for so long. I set it to tape and watched it about ten times. They're just the loveliest people, and the way they look at each other is incredible. Such a marvelous example of what a relationship should be, regardless of sexuality.
Not ashamed to admit that I fluttered when they were asked what the best gift their partner had given them was, and both answered "her heart." <3
It's been said in the past that Ellen kept her "gayness" hidden on her show, but those days are long gone as these two clips clearly demonstrate.
Oh, those days have been long gone since long before now. I don't get to watch the show regularly, but from what I can tell she's casually mentioned Portia pretty often for well over a year (at least), and seven months ago shared lots of footage and pictures from their wedding/honeymoon over several episodes.
The short wedding video that makes me cry every time I watch it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AsyN_FFZJQo (When Ellen says "Oh my God... Oh my God" the first time she sees Portia in the dress, I'm gone.)
Adorable monologue about their wedding: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nHpL643veh8
Hilarious monologue about alarm clocks back from when Portia first got hired for Better Off Ted that demonstrates just how mundanely normal and functional their relationship is: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RF5jUBOBLhk
So I'm the only one...
hmmm
i didn't find it awkward, except when they showed a clip of portia being all pamela anderson for the magician show. i dont know why i found it awkward, but i was like "oh god" and had to look away. weird.
seeing as they are together, i think the topics they could've discussed is limited. I mean, Portia was there to talk about her show...and they talked about being married. at times, i think portia was nervous (saw her leg rocking back and forth a few times) just because she's on her wife's show and that's intimidating all in itself.
I dont think the interview was supposed to be a slam dunk. I think it was supposed to be funny, and awkwardly cute (god, they butchered 'i got you babe') just because they are together and to me, it was like "what will ellen bring up? will she put portia on the spot?"
the newlywed game section was pretty lame though. the straight married couple got better qustions i thought than ellen/portia and i guess it was supposed to be funny, but i did cringe a bit. blah
damn, i went on longer than i meant. basically, i agree some parts were a bit awkward, but not the whole thing.
I thought it was awkward, but not in a bad way
i'm w/you, brian.
of course it was awkward
isn't that part of ellen's charm?
it seemed like it didn't really matter what they said in the interview, i just enjoyed watching them enjoy each other's company in such a simple way.
and have you seen some of the other songs in the bathroom concert series? in comparison, they were perfect.
Gay normalcy is the key point
Whether it's Ellen and Portia or NPH and David, it's showing same sex couples doing everyday things and doing the exact same things that straight couples do and some times take for granite. It's good to see Ellen truly in love and I pray that it always stays that way because after her big breakup with Anne H., I was worried that Ms. Dancing Feet wouldn't find that half to make a whole. NPH looks better than ever and is considered to be Hollywood's 1st gay 'IT' boy. It seems that since the big outing, he has been more visible and accessible and not only to the gay community but all over the place. Maybe Chad Allen should have took some notes because he truly was the one guy that I knew would really make an impact on the Hollywood scene. I know it's not too late for Chad but I know he has a bit of resentment watching NPH became this huge and very public gay star. It seems that being in a highly publicized relationship with David hasn't slowed him down one bit. The good part is how this dynamic duo(NPH and David) are handling the pressure of being in the limelight just fine and not shying away from big events like a Lakers game, it has to be the first we have all seen. I'm so fortunate to be living in an era that gay men and women are everywhere.
I used to feel there was this double-standard when it came down to lesbians and gay men but I have to say that my opinions have changed throughout the years. It seems that the fear that most people have of gay male couples, is the exact same fear when they think about real lesbian couples. Lindasy Lohan and her better half, Sam can't get a break and mainly because Lindasy used to be the party girl on the scene with so many male suitors left in her path. Now that she found an equal, a partner in Sam, it seems the same people that used to praise her, now are putting her down ever chance they get.
I used to be a bit jealous of my lesbians friends and at one point in time which I have to say that i had more of my share of lesbian gal pals and I couldn't ask for better companions. However my love life suffered since I was holed up in a few too many lesbians bars and clubs, which always had the hottest music and the friendliest people but there wasn't any guys for me. If they were at the lesbian establishments, they were there to meet some girl for a three-way or to try their luck at the act of conversion. Most guys that used to run or be totally afraid of me for being gay, used to march around with the 'I LOVE LESBIANS' banners. However, that entire lovefest didn't usually last long. It seems once the too-afraid-of me guys got the hint that their lesbian love interests, were private affair type gals, it was a wrap. This is were the lesbian loves of their lives were now just your average run of the mill lesbians/dykes.
Since we live in a man's world and let me make it clear and point out the facts that it's a straight man's world. They make up all rules and sometimes as they go along and without too much importances on the human conditions. It seems that straight men love to see to women do anything and forget that true-in-their-heart lesbians love women. Most of them don't want an audience in on their love-making sessions, when it's about to go down. It seems that the media and other outlets tell a different story about lesbians and the untrue tales of 'lipstick lesbians' is born. Even women that never thought or looked at a women in a sexuality way, will do the crime of being with another women. Most of the time to make a guy happy or notice a wild side of them, that turns men on. It's truly a crime if you really think about the sacrifice most women are making. However there is a flipside and that is the simple facts that no one but other gay men, like or appreciate witnessing two men kissing or caressing, which I find that to be a crime. There is nothing more sensual and sexy than seeing two men hugging or caressing one another and I don't want to even talk about kissing because that is an entirely other 'hot' topic.
I wish that kind of happiness that Ellen and Portia and NPH and David possess. I can only hope that every gay and lesbians couples would one day feel the exact same way, without any regrets or being ashamed. The only sin in life is not being able to be yourself with the person that you truly love.
