Dear Elton: What the HELL Were You Thinking?

In what can only be described as a truly odd pairing, outspoken gay popstar Elton John performed Saturday night at Rush Limbaugh's fourth wedding for a cool fee of one million dollars. While it's not surprising to see Limbaugh yet again availing himself of the sacred right to marry as many women as his heart desires, two questions about the event come to mind. First, why did the notoriously antigay radio pundit hire a gay-rights advocate to perform at his wedding? Second, and more importantly, why did the British superstar accept the gig?

While only Rush and Elton know what they were thinking, it's not hard to imagine Limbaugh actually taking a perverse pleasure in having Elton sing for him. After all of the horrible things the conservative talk show host has said about gay people, one can picture Limbaugh getting a kick out of knowing that he could get John to ignore his virulently homophobic track record and entertain him for the right price.

Dance, monkey, dance!

As for Elton John, it's truly hard to imagine what led him to make such an appalling decision. It's hard to believe John doesn't know that Limbaugh has in part built his fortune on the backs of the gay community he's relentlessly attacked. So one can only assume it was the million dollars (and not because John has fond feelings for Rush or wife number four). But is John that hard up for the money?

Rush and future alimony check number four keeping marriage sacred!

Honestly, I don't care if he is completely broke — taking this gig is inexcusable even, if as some have suggested, John intends to take the million dollars and give it to his own charity, something which the singer has not given any indication of doing.

There is no denying Elton has done a massive amount of good for the GLBT community and those dealing with HIV/AIDS. But in taking money that Limbaugh made by demonizing those same groups, John just tarnished all the good he's done. He needs to return the check and apologize.
