"Forbidden Love" video clip update: Steroids are for cheaters!
Today's Forbidden Love update begins with the rather shocking image of Fabian (or, as Dennis likes to call him, "Bat Boy") serenading Judith, which kicks off one of the more bizarre episodes to date. But as the assorted warblings don't have much to do with Christian and Olli, let's catch up with them first. Christian is pushing forward on his boxing career with his slimy new agent. What's really great to watch here is a male couple being supportive of each other in ways that have nothing to do with their sexuality. The issue confronting Christian isn't about whether or not to come out, but how hard to push for his chance in the ring. And Olli is right there to cheer him on just like any supportive partner. And when the issue of steroids comes up, Olli is right there to have his say about that. And how great is it to see a gay boxer anyway? Pretty damned great, I'd say. So will Christian shoot up for his career? Either way, based on this promising VL news, it looks like the gay couple will still be around come August, when this rather shocking kiss will take place:
Meanwhile, back at No Limits, it's karaoke night, with the other players engaging in some of the most scattershot singing since the Buffy musical episode (yes, Willow, I'm talking to you.). Check out all the awesomeness after the break! Thanks, as ever, to Gays of Daytime and Nanna for the clip and subtitles. Submitted by on Fri, 2008-05-30 08:49. |

Poor Fabian!
He actually has beautiful eyes, but--to me--it's that atrocious haircut that works against his appeal.
What was the German song Charlie sang? (Sorry, the only German songs I know are "Lili Marlene," "Rock Me, Amadeus" and "Der Kommissar.")
Happy to see that Ollian will be with us through the summer! Yay!

Rote Rosen by Hildegard Knef
Rote Rosen by Hildegard Knef. It's totally a great old fashioned diva song. Basically it's about a person demanding that red roses shall rain down on her and that she demands that she gets to experience everything in life and all the world's miracles should happen to her, I want everything or nothing, the would should change for me, I'm not gonna be content with just small things etc...
It's perfect for Charlie.
Thanks, and another question...
...something I'm curious about vis à vis American soap operas versus European (or German, in this case) soap operas is the use of narrative overlap: I'm not talking about character interaction, which we've already seen with Christian and Olli involved in Judith's storyline, Gregor's storyline and Olivia's storyline; what I mean is do the separate stories overlap and intersect with each other, thus creating reverberations down the line.
As an example, a few years ago on As the World Turns, there was a baby-swap storyline that eventually involved practically every character on the show (Craig had switched Jennifer's baby [his son] with Gwen and Casey's baby, which Paul & Rosanna discovered, which resulted in Craig driving Rosanna off the road and into a coma, Emily helped Paul, etc., etc.). The most common technique on American soaps is a trial, often a murder trial, in which secrets are revealed, having considerable impact on nearly every character (classic examples of this are Karen Wolek's confession on the witness stand on One Life to Live in 1977 and Annie Dutton's mental breakdown on the witness stand on Guiding Light in 1996). Do such things occur on the German soaps?

Hmmm, I haven't been
Hmmm, I haven't been watching German Soaps that long and I don't watch all of them (there are A LOT of German soaps, particularly if you count telenovelas and telenovela halfbreeds too). My gut instinct is, sure, I bet there are some even though I can't think of any at the moment (but again, I for example stay away form telenovelas). Most things that come to my mind are weddings, deaths (including whodunits) and big parties. One of the most flashy outside storyline on VL for example was when a whole bunch of characters went on a cruise together (with actual location shoots in different countries), but it wasn't all characters.
I have to admit that I can't remember any storyline like the reveal of Amber's baby lie on B&B (where they had an entire week of her gathering the whole family, confessing her crime and everybody taking turns berating her and the only characters who weren't present at the confession still gossipped about it). I do think that it's very possible that this kind of thing is more frequent in the various telenovelas since they are usually more centered around a character or a storyline.
I also noticed the relative absence of serial killers and serial rapists, which I'm actually rather happy about.
Again, thanks!
And I agree: it saddens me that in American culture, violence is considered more acceptable than sexuality.

Violence Vs. Sex
Broadcast regulations in regards to sex and violence
It was pretty fascinating to read the German broadcast regulations of what can and can't be shown before 8pm. From what I remember almost all sexual restrictions mentioned nothing about what can be shown or who can do it with whom but instead was mainly concerned with depicting situationsof dubious consent (no rape where the rape victim is portrayed as enjoying themselves, no degradation of a person, no examples of violence or other forms of pressure being successful in getting somebody sex and romance, no peer pressure being portrayed as a positive thing).
Interesting that most of restrictions in the area of sex actually ended up leading back to having issues with violence.
In addition to that in section for programs for younger kids in particular they actually have restrictions AGAINST portraying stereotypical gender roles. Then there is restrictions against programs that portray situations that are atypical and abnormal from the experience of people who are in their growing up phase and that therefore might cause them anxieties in regards to what is expected of them by their future partners. Sexual experience being overemphasized in a way that a person who is considered worth less if they don't have it. Restrictions against vulgar to describe sex in a way that is demeaning to the human being or of a particular gender. Sexuals acts that are being portrayed as being performed as only one partner wanting and demanding it. Certain sexual acts not only being portrayed but being portrayed as being superior to others. Regulations against the portrayal of relationships where lust is portrayed as the singular driving foce while feelings and responsibilites in a relationship aren't just ignored but negated.
Ergh, I guess to me it's just fascinating to see the kind of things that German bureaucrats consider worth obsessing over. How it's all about the intrinsic dynamics of the relationships being portrayed rather than about how many percent of a naked boob you see.
It seems that their main care with the whole thing is to prevent from things being shown that might cause the viewer anxieties (rather than seeing morality as their main issue), whether it is about war or violence or sex.
And I thought I was old...
Hidegard Knef OMG wasn't she a German cabaret star with Marlene Deitrich. They sang a lot of great songs many of them redone of late by Ute Lemperer.
Based on your Nom de Net, perhaps you are a German resident, ergo, you have heard of Knef as a legend.
"Nichts als eine Auster"
afhickman
"It takes a village (to make Village People)"
In the 1990s, Knef recorded several songs with Max Raabe and his Palast Orchester, inlcuding "The Irritated Oyster." She first caught my eye in a German film, "Nachts auf den Strassen," and then in "Diplomatic Courier," with Tyrone Power. One of her last roles was in Billy Wilder's "Fedora." She was known for her sexy, deep voice. She also appeared in a biography on Marlene Dietrich ("Her Own Song") just a year before her death. It was directed by Dietrich's grandson, David Riva!
Excellent episode. I so
Excellent episode. I so hope that Christian doesn't get so desperate to win that he takes the steroid route. The effects can destroy the body and mind. Olli must do whatever it takes to stop Christian from making one of the worst moves of his life.
When Christian got knocked out in the boxing ring, the look of horror on Olli's face spoke volumns of how difficult it's going to get for him having to watch the love of his life taking a beating during fights.
I'm just loving that picture of Christian giving Olli a kiss in the ring. And the fact that the relationship is still kicking along beautifully into August is just awesome. I'm so looking forward to their storyline unfolding over the summer months. This Olli and Christian storyline has me in it's grip!!
Judith's singing leaves a lot to be desired. And Fabian's ears still resemble Bat Boy.
Cannot view the video on Veoh! urghhh
To Nanna, Gays of daytome & afterelton.com editors:
The vids from Veoh site used to be really slow to load before. Now for some reason the website says it is blocked in my country - Sri Lanka - and the videos won't load at all. Is it possible for me to get a link for the same subtitled VL vids on Youtube/ dailymotion/ any other video sharing site? I love these VL vids so much. Thanks.
FL on YouTube
i really hate it when some (insert very un-ladylike language) government decides what you're allowed to watch. You can find all my videos on YouTube. Here's a playlist Christian & Oliver -- their story with English subtitles .
They're basically the same as the one your can watch on AE, the one difference being that I tone our foul German language down for you guys here.
Hurray, suddenly I can post links. This is great!
VL on YouTube
Yes, thank you!!!
Nanna, I appreciate so much all your hard work translating this wonderful story for us! I've been studying French, and I love to watch French videos at youtube, now you've got me considering to study German, as well!
