"Gossip Girl" to have same-sex kiss. Why do I smell a ratings stunt?

Ed Westwick wearing a James Dean shirt. Is that a clue to his Gossip Girl character?

It looks like despite the fact that Gossip Girl already has one gay character the show can't find any storylines for, the show's sixth episode is going to throw in a same-sex kiss between Chuck Bass (Ed Westwick) and Josh Ellis (Neal Bledsoe). Perhaps not coincidentally, the episode might air just in time for this fall's sweeps period.

Hey, isn't that what God made lesbian kisses for?

The news of the potential smooch comes via Entertainment Weekly's Michael Ausiello who says insiders told him the kiss was being filmed this week

Fans of the Gossip Girl books know that the character of Chuck is bisexual, something which the show hasn't addressed thus far. The question here is whether the show is going to address it now, or if the rather cliched plot — Chuck's girlfriend Blair sets him up on a date with a gay guy to help her snag something she wants — is just a one time thing.

I'm guessing it's a one off-er, but Ausiello teases that after locking lips with Josh, the kiss prompts Chuck to say something very interesting to Blair.

Personally, I'm not holding my breath as this smells way too much like a publicity stunt for Season Three. But maybe I'm wrong, and Gossip Girl will be the CW teen shows to finally go "there" in a meaningful way.

Regardless of whether it is

Regardless of whether it is a ratings stunt or not...it's going to be a good thing I think! I mean like you mentioned, lesbian kisses are usual done for ratings, mainly because there is a double standard when it comes to girl on girl action, but boy on boy action is a no-no, usually followed by 'ew's and vomitting noises. So the fact that their going to do it is another sign of how things are progressing in the US :D.

wasnt it said before

that Dan was gay or bi in the GG books as well?

I had my hopes on Penn Badgley doing the honor. Ed is all right in my view. I can see how he could kiss another guy in the series though. Seems to be very open about it, like how before Eric came out being gay, he was hanging out alot with Chuck.

We shall see!

cant wait.

From what I understand...

Dan isn't gay but he kisses another guy at a party and questions his sexuality, eventually realizing he's overthinking things. However, Chuck is hinted as bisexual throughout the book, though it sounds like he lives up to the predatory bisexual stereotype. (From what I've heard, the guy who attacked Jenny in the pilot is what Chuck is like in the books.)

Smell something iffy?

Yeah, because it reaks of ratings stunt.

I would preffer if they actually explore the original sexuality, but I dont mind the one off, what I mind is the execution of the thing, there are good and bad ways to do it. Even if it is a one time thing, it helps to desensitize people, because sadly people still need to. Every little bit helps.

the kitty seems oddly appropriate. :D

Going out on a limb here...

...but I think that tween girls make up the bulk of Gossip Girl's viewership. With that in mind, which do you think they would rather see, a girl-girl kiss or a guy-guy kiss?

I would suggest

based on the tweens I know...the guy on guy kiss would be the favourite, as it would with me too

I prefer guy on guy too.

I prefer guy on guy too. Girl on girl does nothing for me.

Don't forget to include

all the tween gurls here on AE.

Stunt smooch.

Considering Ned Bledsoe doesn't have a IMDB entry for Gossip Girl I would say it is a one shot deal.  Chuck most likely needs something from the guy and this is his way of manipulating the guy.

I'm sure Chace Crawford helped him "run his lines".

It's Neal Bledsoe not Ned. :

It is Neal

You are right but it is Neal that I was looking to on IMDB.

Yeah. It says so right here..

From EW

Bledsoe, 28, will star in the sixth episode of Gossip Girl’s third season as Josh Ellis, NYU’s head of freshman affairs. Here’s what EW reports: “Since Josh is tasked with selecting an incoming student for the honor of delivering the freshman speech, he’s, shall we say, a person of interest to Blair. In fact, she’s so determined to snag the slot that she goes so far as to pimp out her boyfriend out to the gay guy in charge.”

The Genealogy of Chuck Bass

Chuck is bi. I always imagined that after he had lost his virginity in the sixth grade to Georgina Sparks, Chuck had a big gay summer romance somewhere in Europe. However, the guy completely  fvcked him up, and Chuck still has emotional scars. Hence, this is the reason why Chuck has relationship/commitment issues with women (and men) and why he is so fvcked up: deep emotional baggage. Nabokov said: "What ever happens to a boy during the summer when he is 14, can mark him for life." So, we are talking heavy stuff here. This also explains why Chuck was so supportive of Eric when he came out and why he was willing to reach out when that Asher guy was using Eric/Jenny in season 1. (Everybody was like: Chuck and Eric are best buddies all the sudden?!).

Anyways, in my book, the big European gay love returns in season 3 finale and we get to see flashbacks from Venice in the early 2000s and how did the whole thing start and how it ended. (I already see the name of the episode: The Genealogy of Chuck Bass. This title is going to be a nod to Blair too ,cause she has to read Foucault in that  episode, but she doesn’t understand a thing ).

As for the head of freshman affairs, he is just a preview, teaser if you will for things to come, before the real story unfolds. <fantasy mode off>Of course, in the real world, CW is going to completely ruin the story with the freshman and   nothing interesting or subversive is going to happen.

I thought Chuck was gay and

I thought Chuck was gay and not bi in the books? Anyway, this sounds really exciting and cant wait for this!

I wonder what it is that Chuck says to Blair after his kiss with Josh. A threesome perhaps? ;p

Favorite pairing

On the imdb message board for Gossip Girl, there was a question about our favorite pairing, which couple we'd like to see in the next season.

Ever since Nate was living with the Humphreys I had some wild dreams about Nate and Dan hooking up. But when I posted them as my fav coupling my post got deleted for being inappropriate. So much for posting on imdb message boards.

But Nate and Chuck would be my second fav pairing. Nate (Chance) is sex on legs and shouldn't be wasted on the ladies. ;-)

Although I´m not a big fan...

...I am really looking forward to seeing this, probably because I always thought there was something gay about Ed Westwick :-)

They are preserving the sanctity of marriage, so that two gay men who’ve been together for twenty-five years can’t get married, but a guy can still get drunk in Vegas and marry a hooker at the Elvis chapel! The sanctity of marriage is saved!

Probably a ratings stunt

This is probably a ratings stunt, cause I read that Chuck and Blair will be together most of the upcoming season.

I still think it's cool they are "going there". And it's nice they use a male on male kiss to up the ratings.. Like someone said, they usually use lesbian kisses to do that. Most tween girls watch this show, and it might be the reason, cause they probably prefere male on male instead of female on female.

Chuck and Blair together? Are they ever together?

The whole deal with Chuck and Blair is how troubled and tenuous their relationship is. Adding a Bi Chuck to the mix will offer TONS more opportunities for Drama-Drama-Drama! in the grand Nighttime Soap manner that we all love.

The posibilities are endless. After all Blair's an extremely sophisticated young woman. Teh Ghey is not alien to her. She might find a Bi Chuck while emotionally troubling for her, socially advantageous at the same time. Chuck of course loves Blair -- but doesn't want to be in love with anyone. Stepping out on her with a Dude or two could be ust the ticket for him.

And us.

Keep Chuck Straight

Personally, I would prefer if the writers kept the character of Chuck Bass straight. I find him to be the most unlikable and unredeemable character on the show.. The last thing we need is another gay/bi character who reinforces homophobic stereotypes of gays/bisexuals as evil, immoral people.
David Ehrenstein's picture

Oh Come On Now

GG already has Eric (Connor Paolo) who's virtually a Gay Saint. Nobody watchs this show for "role mdoels." It's all about "bad behavior." And it takes place on a planet somewhat like our own but not inhabited by anyone we know -- save in fantasies and dreams.

There's a debate?

Of course it's a stunt!    10 years ago, it would be unthinkable for a male regular cast member to kiss another man, that was the domain of the lesbian kiss, for the titilation of straight men.  Now, young straight girls are titilated by two men kissing, so it's on.  Men being objectified only serves to put men and women on a more even playing field.  And since sexism is the root of homophobia, this only serves to benefit us actual gays, too.
Mary's picture

Just saying.

Rating's stunt or no, I'm so there.

I luff Chuck Bass, I was always resentful that they never depicted him as bisexual in the first place!
