Breaking News: Isaiah Washington Fired From Grey's Anatomy

File this under the it should have happened a long time ago, but Michael Ausiello just broke the news that ABC has fired Isaiah Washington from Grey's Anatomy. I just wrote an article about the whole thing for the main page (making this a sixteen hour day--Oy!) so I'll just say it's about fricking time.

In my opinion, ABC and Shonda Rhimes have botched this from the very beginning in a variety of ways ranging from not addressing it publicly to not showing T.R. either public or private support to Rhimes' bizarre assertion at the Golden Globes that the whole thing had somehow been manufactured by the press.

Frankly, if they had simply dealt with Washington's use of the anti-gay slur with a suspension right at the start, much of this could have been avoided. But everyone involved had to drag it out until yesterday. (Let me add, I would have fired him on the spot simply for his assault on Dempsey.)

Finally canning Washington pretty much proves everything we've been saying from the beginning and gives the sordid affair the closure it should have had all along. Hopefully, other actors, networks, and producers have learned a lesson by watching, and we won't have a repeat. On the other hand, we all know how much Hollywood loves a sequel.
