Spoiler alert! Meet Caprica's gay character!

Sasha Roiz

After SyFy released the first episode of Caprica in May, I speculated as to who the gay character would turn out to be. Not to toot my own horn, but it turns out I was right. Meet ... Sam Adama played by Sasha Roiz!

I've been trying to confirm my guess for a while, but it was only after GLAAD gave SyFy a failing grade that the network sort of spilled the beans. In an interview with TV Guide's Matt Mitovich, Syfy's executive vice president of original content, Mark Stern promised that the network would do better and specifically mentioned Caprica which will have two queer characters.

Stern didn't say exactly who the gay characters are, but his use of the word "goodfella" to describe one cinched that it had to be Sam Adama (brother of Joseph Adama who is the father of William Adama) who is not our typical gay character.

As we learned in the first episode, Sam is an "enforcer" in the Ha'la'tha, a Tauron-based criminal organization. Basically think the mob and an enforcer is a hit man. In case you missed the first episode, Sam actually murders a corrupt government official who won't take a bribe Sam is offering.

In another interesting twist, Sam is also married to another man, something apparently not the least bit controversial in Caprican society or with the Ha'la'tha. Said Stern about Sam:

It was very interesting to me to take what is traditionally a very heterosexual role in an organization that we think of as being extremely homophobic, and put a gay character in that world in a very normalized way.

I concur wholeheartedly and love the idea of the pantheon of gay characters being big enough to include someone as morally complicated as Sam has the potential to be.

Stern also referenced another gay character in the show, but I'm given to understand this one is more slight and is part of a group communal marriage featuring "heterosexual as well as homosexual couplings."

This should be very interesting! Stay tuned for details!

Too Bad the BSG Series Finale...

was such a massive stinking pile of s***.

That series finale was so ridiculous, so nonsensical that it retroactively RUINED the entire series.

Jane Espenson has her work cut out for her to bring back viewers that were completely alienated by Ron Moore's stupidity.

Observation

I am glad to hear this. However, I find the comments for the TV Guide article amusing. The bigots are always funny. They start off telling you about how many gay friends and family members they have, and, then they say some of the nastiest thing that a homobigot can say. "Why do you want to flaunt it, etc." I have a hard time believing any of these posts are by real people with gay people in their lives. No one who is my friend would think of me being with someone as flaunting it. It would be just a natural as them wanting to date someone or marry someone. It never occurs to them that as a part of entertainment and wanting to write that want wants to show the diversity of life, and to use that as a means of telling different story. Indeed, they make bizare arguments about GLAAD having pushed this on SyFy, which is bizare since as I remember these character developments predate GLAADs report. But, bigots never let reality stop them from believing the crap they make up.

Well...

He was the frontrunner and I agree it poses some interesting possibilities plot wise. Mind you, I didnt think a killing scene could be so hot.

My second choice would have been the cop investigating the Soldiers of One, which name I forget, who could delve into the moral gray while being one of the "good" guys or simply be the straight guy (pun definitely intended). However, Sterns point is a valid one and Im looking forward to see this develop, with all the Sci Fi coming next season its going to have to be compelling. It certainly has a lot to make for to all the gay fans.

BTW in a somewhat related matter, I found out today that Tomas Vergis is going to be a Tauron and he is a nasty man, my juices are starting to flow.

Yea the finale of BSG did

Yea the finale of BSG did suck but seasons 1and 2 where some of the best tv i ever seen, the acting, music and storietelling where as good as it gets IMO and even though it was subtle in season 2 it did have admiral cain a openly lesbian character who was a very honest and real character. The movie razor realy cemented the relationship she and the 6 had prior to here betrayal, that is why i choose to belief the hole debacle with Gaeta is a series of unfortunate events rather then wilful hate.

OK on to Caprica now,as i expected i absolutly loved the first episode and that was even before i read there was a gay character but now that i know the gay character is joseph's gangster brother i belief (hope) this show is going to blow everything else on tv out of the water.

I didn't want to look

but I couldn't help myself.   Damn, you!  I agree with those who didn't care for the finale, but the 70 or so episodes before it were (nearly) all amazing and the show was my favorite ever.  I can only hope Caprica doesn't disappoint.  I love the world they've created, which is completely 100% gender-blind (and therefore not homophobic), yet still has lots of racism.  I wonder if they've tried to figure out how such a society evolved.

Gay producer of Galactica Harvey Frand died

on July 23, at the age of 68. He was the man behind Syfy's Galactica. He is survived by Bill Bowersock, described as his "domestic partner of 32 years".

So this begs the question even more, why wasn't Gaeta and Hoshi outed during the series on tv rather than in webisodes seen by only a tiny fraction of the audience. And why weren't the webisodes included in the dvd release? It's very sad.

Nice that Caprica has a gay character. It'll be interesting to learn how out he is on screen.

In this day and age

I find it hard to believe that any wathcher of BSG hasn't also seen, or at least heard about the webisodes.  While I agree it would've been nice for them to have been gay onscreen, I don't believe for a second that it was some sort of intentional slight.

This sounds very interesting

One of the long-standing traditions of written science fiction is exploration of social roles and things like gender norms. However, television science fiction has historically steered clear of this, instead maintaining "traditional" gender and sexuality roles except in exceptional cases.

So a gay mobster is actually a pretty interesting concept, and worth watching just to see how they handle it.

Gay gangsters

Gay gangsters are not that new an idea, in fiction or reality.
One of the gangsters who dominated the criminal underworld in
London's East End during the 1950s and 1960s was gay:

Also there was a TV drama over here in 2004 called 'The Long Firm'
that starred Mark Strong as a vicious London gangster who happened
to be gay - and who was probably based in part on Ronnie Kray. This
is probably still available on DVD, though it does take a strong stomach
to watch some scenes.

Didn't The Sopranos also

Didn't The Sopranos also have a gay mobster?  Perhaps the difference here is the Caprican mob doesn't care?
