Michael Urie, High School Musical 2, the BAFTA's and more

Michael Urie just gave a short, but...interesting mini-interview to Greg Hernandez over at Out in Hollywood. Greg was at an Ugly Betty event at the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences as was Urie. The two had a brief unscheduled chat (which seems to be the only way to interview Urie, as we've been trying forever) and Greg got to ask Michael a few questions about Urie's character Marc St. James, working with Patti LuPone, and Marc's coming out episode. Then there was this little item:

Then we have an exchange that threatened to leave me red-faced but Urie handled it with grace:
Greg: "You're out..."
Urie: Nods his head no.
Greg: "Are you out?"
Urie: Nods his head no.
Greg: "Do you not really discuss your personal life?"
Urie: "Not really, no. You read that magazine that was like...you know..."
Greg: "Really, I don't care. i just thought you might have something to say about it.
Urie: "I think it's important to be completely honest with the ones around you and yourself. Mark, by not being honest with his mother was not being honest with himself."

Like I said, interesting. Tomorrow Greg chats with Mark Indelicato who plays Justin on the show.

Speaking of Ugly Betty, the show is planning an all musical episode ala Scrubs and Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Here is praying it's more Scrubs than than the Buffster. And speaking of musicals, the very gay seeming, but strangely not gay at all High School Musical is set to hit on August 17th.

Tongues are wagging about tabloid rag The Globe's latest "news" concerning Tobey Maguire and Leonardo DiCaprio. There is precious little reason to suspect this is anymore true than the homophobic garbage they recently printed about the VTU killer being gay. This is one nasty paper.

Isaiah Washington's gay publicist says the actor will be doing two public service announcements for GLAAD and that they are broadening the message a little bit. Hmm, I wonder what that means exactly? Speaking of Isaiah, Michael Ausiello over at TVGuide.com confirms that there will be be some big reveals in the season finale of Grey's Anatomy. He lists a number of possibilities including both T.R. Knight and Washington leaving the show, but won't give any hints as to which are most likely.

Now here is a surprise: Torchwood, a show set in Cardiff, Wales, produced by BBC Wales, and created by Welshman Russell T. Davies swept the BAFTA Wales Awards. I'm just speechless! One point of contention--how did David Tennant, who just joined Doctor Who beat out Torchwood's John Barrowman?

And as long as we're talking superhero types, my recent post on creating your own superhero resulted in two very cool heroes that I thought everyone should see. Meet Crimson Canuck:

Of course, a Canadian would choose such a modest name. Not exactly the case for our next hero:

So basically this Greg guy

So basically this Greg guy outed Michael? But I thought he was openly bisexual.

No

His Myspace said bisexual before he became a "star" on Ugly Betty, but that is gone now. Then a tabloid story came out all about what a shock it is that he's straight and dating some woman.

Which way does Urie want to be seen?

If he's straight, as that absurd tabloid article (bragging about how he's straight and has a girlfriend) claims, why doesn't he say it? Instead he almost seemed to be saying, "I'm gay, but I'm not out, so just follow the publicity that said otherwise." What is he? If he's straight, why can't he just say it? This really is Sean Hayes all over again, only he's even less talented, which is saying something.

I know there are more important things to be discussing, but...

...you did NOT just hate on the BUFFY musical episode...

I've got half a mind to pull a Miss Celie in your Starbucks today, Mr. Jensen. Thank your lucky lattes that there are 46 states between us.

I loved the idea

but thought the execution rather weak and some of them***cough Buffy cough***can't sing.

Stop Hating on Once More With Feeling

Hee,  I actually liked why Joss Whedon didn't dub the non-singers -- the demon's power was to make them sing, not sing beautufully.  Although I love that Amber Benson does her ode to Willow justice, and James Marsters channels Billy Idol.
nordic balance's picture

That sums Buffy up well

The idea was always much better than the execution, especially in the later seasons. Never have I seen a show where so many actors clearly wanted to be anywhere else but on that set or around each other. Buffy and Angel are the most overrated shows of all time. Right up there with Heroes.

can't sing, but...

I bought the soundtrack to that episode. For me it's not about the singing at all. The songs were mostly funny and I loved it even more because of it. The silly lyrics and goofy dancing was endearing!

DH: Is Andrew going to be turned straight?

Do any of the Afterelton people have any thoughts on this? Ugh, as if I didn't have enough contempt for how Marc Cherry writes gay men. I wonder if all the complaining from Shawn Pyfrom is why Andrew is going to start going with women. http://www.buddytv.com/articles/desperate-housewives/desperate-housewives-perks-up-6064.aspx
Michael Jensen's picture

In our interview with Marc Cherry he

he said Andrew might be exploring his sexuality. I would normally be completely fine with they're doing that, but given how Pyfrom has gone on about the show, I'm not crazy about it.
nordic balance's picture

Exactly

Pyfrom will probably be happy to go along with any heterosexuality in Andrew. It makes me nauseous. I have seen so many gay roles turned straight, and with the way Pyfrom has repeatedly made comments to the press, and the way this show is so lazy and stereotypical in how they write gay men, I can see Cherry deciding to have Andrew go straight. Or say he's bi and then totally forget about his gay side. They can say that him knocking some girl up or marrying a mini-Bree is great conflict. The way that Andrew's homosexuality has always been used as nothing more than something to make Bree seem sympathetic and make him look bad, I have to wonder if there has been some secret desire all along on the show's part to turn him straight.

Hating on the Buffy musical?

Hating on the Buffy musical? :o Tsk tsk!

Maybe they weren't the best singers, but that was kinda the point... that it was just random people singing. I thought Sarah did a pretty good job. I think them actually singing it was a better choice than getting professionals to dub it over, even if the actors themselves didn't have the best voices in some instances.

Michael I was planning on

Michael I was planning on scolding you because you do not like the Buffy musical, a classic in my book. But seeing how Joss Whedon's reputation is already defended by Brian and Glenn I'll go easy on you and just say: "I'm disappointed in you Michael."

I love Buffy, but I'm sorry, I just didn't

think the musical ep worked very well. The rest of you are wrong entitled to your opinions, but mine stands!

We don't need another Hero (... well, maybe just one more)

ummm... I know I sort of missed the boat, but wanted to share my Super Hero with everyone, too. (Is that OK? It'll take just a second, promise.) :)

COMMANDER DISCO! (Tah-Dah!)

"Wally Wood’s life was forever changed when he fell victim to a freak accident in 1978. As Wally danced the night away to the disco hits at Club Europa, a loose speaker fell from the ceiling, tragically ending his dancing days forever. Or so it seemed. Moments after being knocked to the floor, Wally discovered he could channel the music somehow through his body. In the following days, Wally found that he could indeed amplify any sound with amazing ability, but he could also blast the disco hits from the other night effortlessly! As the years went on, Wally found that his body had somehow become altered, and preserved his health and sleek physique in perfect condition. And with some help of his boyfriend at a top secret laboratory, fashioned an amplification mitt, allowing him to further control his sound abilities to amplify or modulate his sounds as needed. Now the music never stops, thanks to COMMANDER DISCO!"

They Got the Mustard Out

Scrubs' musical was cute, but the Buffy musical advanced the storyline of the show, was deliberately downbeat (though several of the songs sound happy, almost all of them are about the relationships of the characters falling apart) and, as several good folks have already pointed out, was structured to be sung by amateurs, not professionals, since the point was our regular characters were being unnaturally forced into singing. Plus it has one of the most explicit same-sex love scenes I've ever seen on network t.v. (the end of the Tara-Willow song where they're, uh, well, not just kissing). The show even jokes about some of the actors' lack of singing ability, i.e. Willow's "I think this line's mostly filler." Though it has laughs, the Buffy musical is more in dark Sondheim territory. The Buffy musical is still one-of-a-kind, because Whedon assured it wasn't just a publicity stunt, but actually fit in with the development of the show's story and themes. I liked the Scrubs musical the night it showed, but that wasn't that long ago and I have to say I remember almost nothing specific about it, whereas I haven't seen the Buffy episode in at least three years, and I remember virtually every scene.

Oh no

Why are they planning a musical episode??? I like musicals, but not musicals in tv shows! Have the run out of good ideas already?

Urie...To be gay or not to be gay?

I wish Urie would just come out and set a good example instead of trying to be criptic. It's not a bad thing to be gay. Proudly embrace your gayness. It's not like he's some big movie star or anything. He's not starring in a number one show like Grey's Anatomy, infact, he's part of the cast of a series that isn't even that big of a draw with audiences. Directors are not beating down his door to offer him movie scripts, so why not just do it and come out of that dusty closet.

That's why I love the few out and proud actors in hollywood. They have put their homosexuality and dignity before fame, and I applaud them for it. The few that are out such as Chad Allen and Charlie David are far from A list actors, and most like will have to pay a price for being out and proud, but God bless them for just being themselves. That's why I will always support their low budget movies and shows because they have diginity and are not ashamed of being who they are. They have put love of self over fame, fortune and cowedice.

The price

Maxine wrote:

That is probably why Urie is still in the semi-closet and doesn't want to pay the price.

Point taken

I see your point Andros, but Urie is no Brad Pitt or Tom Cruise, and his status in terms of actors crediblity is below that of either Chad Allen or Charlie David. He doesn't have a much of a fan following or even hunk status, so why not come out? It may even give him some much needed publicity. He's lucky Afterelton is giving him some free space considering he chooses his interviews very carefully and Afterelton is not one of them.

Most people don't really care weather Urie is gay or not, he's just not that big of a star. I guess he's suffering from delusions of gradure because he's a cast member on Ugly Betty. Besides, he may as well step out of the closet since in the past he already had one foot out.

As for the beautiful Charlie David and Chad Allen...I believe their day will come. And what I really like about these two guys is that they are content to act in mostly gay productions without being afraid what it may do for their future acting careers. They have chosen to be themselves no matter what the cost.  Both these guys came out fairly young and never went back in like a certain other person.

I know a number of gay men still in the closet and it's a nasty place to be, it's just not worth it.

A Sad Case of SHD.

Sounds like Urie has come down with an unfortunate case of SHD (Sean Hayes Disease).

Maybe he wants to be on another show.

Maybe Urie is affraid he won't get cast as a co-star in the new Sarah Connor Chronicles along with Thomas Dekker?

David Tennant of Doctor Who

This is the second time I've read on this site how new David Tennant is to Doctor Who. He's not new. Doctor Who is currently in its third series in the UK. David Tennant has played the Doctor since the finale of series one. Where as Torchwood's Captain Jack Harkness, John Barrowman, has only had series one on the air. Just thought I'd let everyone know.

Thanks for the correction

Didn't realize that as we haven't seen it yet here.
