Mika getting death threats?

Arjan did some guest blogging over at Towleroad and has a hard to get interview with British songster Mika. One of the questions Mika answers--or doesn't--is whether or not he could only get legally married in the U.S. in Massachusetts. Says Mika about his sexuality:

It's none of your frakkin' business so quit frakkin' asking me! I don’t' really discuss that. I don’t feel I really need to. My music speaks for itself.

And so does such a vague answer, but whatever. I continue to believe he is young enough and overwhelmed enough with impending pop stardom that, if he is gay, he should get some slack. But he can't pull an Elton John and get married and then come out. That would just be annoying. But not every gay boy is as forgiving as myself. According to the Metro.co.uk website Mika is getting death threats over his sexuality. Said Mika:

It was over whether I am gay or not. He wasn't happy that I won't talk about my personal life like that. Sometimes I think that I have made it, other times it is a bit worrying.

Hmm, I wonder who might be making those death threats? My money is on either Andy Towle who wants to break the story or one of the AfterElton crack team of Flying Monkeys. They're such radicals, after all.

So who do you all think? If Mika is gay, is he obligated to come out? Have you heard Grace Kelly so many times you're considering making death threats yourself? And should I have Thai or Chinese for lunch?

He's Gay

I think he's gay, but is still trying to decide if coming out will help or hurt his career.

I don't think that he has an obligation to come out, but unfortunately, if he wants to be famous he's going to have to deal with the loss of privacy that comes with fame.

Definitely Thi for lunch.

why is this such a big deal...

Do we really need to turn everything into a huge Big Brother type circus? When have we lost the right to refuse to discuss something so personal. His refusal to discuss his sexuality has nothing to do with politics but with not telling the whole flipping world who he goes to bed with because it's nobody's business. Do you guys really ask people you've only just met (in a bar, at work etc.) who they have sex with? - of course you don't and you don't expect them to tell you either. So why is Mika suddenly disappointing or whatever 'cos he doesn't want to tell everyone what floats his boat. People should just mind their own business. Andrea

I'm just about to eat

and you settled it for me. Now Pad Thai or Bathing Rama. Hmmmm

I'm kind of disapointed in

I'm kind of disapointed in him.  He's right, it shouldn't matter, but on the other hand, refusing to talk about it does matter - it makes it seem like it's still something too sensitive to talk about.  If he really belevied it didn't matter, he'd be honest about it.  Being a popstar is more than just being a musician, it's also being a STAR, with all the razzle-dazzle and privacy loss.

And Chinese, for sure.   Potstickers, yum.

Next....

Show me the heterosexual who says, "I don't want to discuss my sexual identity."

He's had all the attention he deserves from the gay community. I'm not that excited by his music either.

I love his music but

I have to say I wish he would come out if he's gay. Again, I don't get angry at him for not, but it's frustrating. I am puzzled by the refusal. It's not like he's breaking any barriers. Perhaps there are family/religious issues involved.

Pad Thai

sounds really good, but you have probably eaten by now.  What did you have?

Anyhow.  I agree that it would be nice if he would just come out.  It would probably be a nice boost to the community also.

It also may just be the advice of his publicity machine.  You know, air of mystery and all that good crap.  I'll just adopt a wait and see attitude on this one.

nordic balance's picture

C'mon

Oh, please. He's a showman. Air of mystery, etc. Whenever asked about his sexuality, he is coy and cheeky, and the reason it's funny is because he is so utterly flamboyant while performing. When he says "my music speaks for itself" or whatever, he's just cracking, "come on, do you even have to ask?" Eveyone knows he's gay, he knows that everyone knows he's gay, and that's all there is to it. Just because he doesn't talk to Oprah about it doesn't mean he's hiding anything.

But seriously, death threats? I'm sure that's hyperbole, but it's still insane-sounding. What if he'd been getting such messages because he WAS out? If anyone even suggested that one should just keep their sexuality to themselves, I can only imagine the response it would get on this site.

Anyway, Mika's awesome and extremely, unapologetically gay. Plenty of het celebs like to keep their love lives private, so he has every right to do the same. He seems smart and self-aware, so he will get all confessional if he feels he needs to. Like, to avoid death threats or something. Sheesh.

It was a spinach salad

but I'll have Pad Thai tonight!

to come out or not to come out.

mmm, i'm normally pretty hardline on this issue but seeing how the scissor sisters get ignored by usa i reckon it could be smart for mika to wait till he fleeces usa teenyboppers of their money for a month or two and then come out. give him a couple-a months and he probably will.

In a perfect world he should

In a perfect world he should already be out. It may seem stupid but maybe he should wait a few months before coming out. His album is not yet on sale in the USA. If he comes out right now and his album doesn't sell (like Scissor Sisters) it could means that the average American did not buy his CD due to his sexuality. If he is still in the closet and it doesn't sell, well it means the his music is the problem not his sexuality.

When CD will be in millions of American home(I'm sure it will be), when he'll come out people in Texas or wherever will say "He is gay? But I like his music... maybe he is not a bad person and gays aren't evil.)

My what a pretty wooden horse, open the gates, pull it in

Your words, not mine.

So here's a few things I've learned from this forum in the past few days. We should allow ourselves to be judged separate from mainstream media (see GLAAD discussion) because it would seem we're some specialty community (read - less than) and we should only be out once we've gained acceptance from the straight community, which is apparently located in Texas. How wonderful that our goal is to be like the Gestapo infiltrating the French Resistance, pretend to be just like them, gain their trust by eating lots of bread and drinking wine and then surprise! the Nazis, I mean gays have been amongst you the whole time.

Mika is a self-made success in his home country. The music industry slammed the door in his face and he set out to make his name on his own. He utilized MySpace and the blogosphere and he built up a following. His inability to discuss his sexuality, who he loves, who inspires him to write, who he is as an artist is weak and cowardly. However, this has worked wonders for Clay Aiken's career and people like Sean Hayes. As a matter of fact, if history has proven anything it's that OUT and GLAAD won't have enough awards to heap on Mika over the next year.

Say, Andros maybe

you should become a manager!

Keeping quiet vs lying

Reminds me of Pet Shop Boys back in the 80s...

As long as he doesn't lie about it, it's pretty much fine with me. Because, he is right,  the music does speak for itself.
I don't necessarily understand what the big deal is and why he doesn't just come out, but that's just me. There's probably a lot going on that we don't know about.

Lying about it would be a totally different thing though.

Mika is vaguely gay

The topic of “is he or isn’t he gay” reminded me of the excellent article that Locksley Hall did back in June 2006. I think it might apply to Mika.

Vaguely Gay: From David Bowie to Jared Leto?

“It's against the law to be vaguely gay?” Dan Rydell asks his colleague Mallory on Aaron Sorkin's 1998 sitcom Sports Night, when she tells him that his “vaguely gay” habit of singing "Happy Birthday" to his male friend Casey live on television is illegal. Turns out, it's singing "Happy Birthday" in breach of copyright that is against the law, but Dan has raised an interesting point. Is it unfair for men in the public eye to deliberately signal that they might be gay if they're not prepared to follow through by actually coming out?

It's a Lebanese thing...

...I think. Don't forget that while Lebanon - fabulous country BTW - is most certainly the most liberal of the 'arab' countries it is still pretty conversative compared to the USA. He has family there still; I can see why he would have doubts about coming out. I know many Lebanese who, while 'out' to their close social network would never, in a million years, consider being truly, publicly out and certainly not to their family. One may or may not approve of that, but it is an establish social framework in which homosexuality has co-existed with the straight world. in the Middle East, for centuries. (and I really love the album, and here in Moscow, Russia, a clubbed up version of 'Relax' is a huge hit)

why is it that pop stars

why is it that pop stars wait until they are off the charts to come out? I think being out when you're hot will definately make more strides for the community than being someone formerly popular but nobody thinks of in present-tense
McBrokie's picture

He should..

just come out & get it over with!
