"Nurse Jackie" Creator Says Show Still Gay; Harvey Fierstein to Guest Star

Haaz Sleimann as Mo-Mo and Edie Falco as Nurse Jackie
Earlier this week it was reported that Showtime's hit series Nurse Jackie had dropped the character of Mo-Mo (Haaz Sleimann), the gay nurse who is one of Jackie's (Edie Falco) closest friends, for the second season. No explanation was given except to say the character's storyline "had run its course."
AfterEllen.com editor Karman Kregloe spoke with Linda Wallem, the series' co-creator about what was in store for the show gay-wise, despite Sleimann's departure. Karman was kind enough to ask some questions for us and share the scoop!
AfterEllen.com: The Advocate reported this week that with the departure of Haaz Sleiman, who plays gay nurse "Mo Mo," Nurse Jackie is going to be "less gay" in the 2nd season. Care to respond?
Linda Wallem: Nothing could be further from the truth. That's an assumption on their part based on the fact that the actor is not coming back. We're a hospital, we have a ton of gay nurses!
This season, we're going to have a really great gay love triangle ... a three-part arc that is going to be great. I mean it when I say we are going into a new gear of gay this year. So that's my official response.
AE: What about Haaz Sleiman's departure from the show?
LW: The storyline with that gay nurse played itself out. But the part of Thor [played by Wallem's brother, Stephen Wallem], the other gay nurse, is even more visible this year.
As far as Jackie's friendship's go, as far as gay character's go...if anything, we've taken it up a notch. I don't to give away any secrets, but with one of our main characters, there's going to be a romance happening with an old flame, and it's definitely a gay romance. So there you go!
AE: So you don't want to say specifically whether it's a gay or lesbian romance?
LW: Right, because I don't want to give it away. I think everyone will be very happy with what we did, and we'll have a special guest star that will come on.
Also, we'll have Harvey Fierstein as a guest star, and I'm really proud of his story. It's a very simple story of a man whose husband is dying. It's very simple. People are used to Harvey being so huge and flamboyant very he's very stripped down and lovely. It's a beautiful performance of a man whose husband is dying (from old age) and what that feels like for him.
At one point, there's a line where he says, "Can I just not be gay for a minute?" Because everyone is coming up to him and trying to relate and he just wants to be the guy whose husband is dying. We love to take these stories and have the characters just be treated equally and normally.
Harvey Fierstein
AE: When will that episode air?
LW: It's one of the later episodes. If we premiere March 22, then that episode will probably premiere in May sometime. Harvey will break your heart, he's so wonderful.
AE: Can you tell me more about what will happen with the character of Thor?
LW: You're really going to get to know more about Thor this year. He isn't just a big, gay nurse! We'll learn that he's a diabetic, and diabetics have never really been portrayed in a truthful way. I'm very proud of him and what he stepped into, he's terrific.

Oh, please, does anyone
Oh, please, does anyone believe a word of what this woman is saying?
I would bet a bundle that this is just a steaming pile of b*ullsh*t to try to prevent the gay viewership from abandoning the show before the new season even starts, due to the pointless and insulting disappearance of the only major gay character. She is tap dancing as fast a she can, but please, this is just pathetic. And, no, I don't think that she deserves the benefit of the doubt, or that anyone should believe a word she says.
I won't be bothering with this show next season.
Ridiculous
When an actor's story runs its course, it is because the writers and creators aren't willing to create the course for the character to run on. All they seem to be doing is replacing Mo-mo with Thor. Since Thor was more of a minor character than Mo-mo, what is it about Thor that makes his story more necessary to tell than Mo-mo's? Why not make Mo-mo diabetic? Why not Mo-mo be involved in a gay love triangle? The only reason I can tell Thor is there and not Mo-mo is because the actor playing Thor is the co-creator's brother. Nepotism much?
Again, shallow, trite, infantile, asinine and ridiculous.
Nurse Jackie just lost a viewer. With divas like Edie Falco, Anna Deveare-Smith, and Eve Best, who watches this show outside of the gay commmunity? They're screwed.
Bad Move
There is no doubt that this move is going to come back and bite the creators on the ass when the new season begins. There is already outrage among the fans that mo mo is gone.
I agree with those that believe there is more to this story that is not being told. They could have found a new direction to take the character but decided to cut the character.
Smells like.....
Hmm
A gay muslim's character has run it's course? Is it just me or should that have been a longer course?
Either way, still excited for the new season, Mo-Mo or not.
Escuse me?
Mo mo was interesting-- as a fine piece of ass. He wasn't an outstanding character at all, so don't get your panties in a bunch. The series is great, with or without Mo-Mo.
What upsets me is the gay they choose to stay with. Thor is insufferable. He's obnoxious. He had no story.
What story did Momo have that ran its course? Nothing. None of his interactions, especially with Jackie, were resolved.
Why did they pick Thor over Mo-Mo? Their explanation is pure bullshit. More went on that led to their cutting Mo-Mo loose.
Now, I won't stop watching the show, but I will certainly be less enthusiastic, especially knowing that Thor-- a character I despised on the first season even with his monimal screen time-- is getting bigger emphasis.
What would've done it for me is if they had cut O'Hara. I love that woman to death; she's my favorite character.
Deja Vu
Wow, Linda Wallem sounds a lot like Shonda Rhimes making excuses for her show after Erica Hahn was sent out to the parking lot of no return.
The idea that they ran out of storylines for the gay, Muslim nurse who was the only peer with whom Jackie shared a rapport (O'Hara doesn't count) means that their writing staff is just LAZY. Plus, based on what Michael Ausiello reported MoMo's absence isn't even noted in the season's opening episodes. He just disappears like Judy Winslow from Family Matters, never to be heard of again. Another sign of BAD WRITING.
I've had misgivings about this show--particularly the way Anna Deavere Smith has been woefully underused--and this latest move doesn't help. If I tune in at all, at this point, it'll be to enjoy Zoey's comic relief (which, I imagine, won't be nearly as funny without Mo there).

Their friendship
Jackie and Mo-Mo's friendship was the best thing about this series! It was what made me watch. It was a crucial part of the series too. I don't get why they would just dump such an important person in Jackie's life? And because of what? He has "run" his course? That is complete and utter BS and like everyone else have said before me, just plain bad writing. They could have done so much with Mo-Mo. He was such an intriguing character. How often do you have a muslim gay nurse on a show? Why not show him with his family? Maybe he could get sick? Or maybe they could actually show some of his love life on screen? Like I said, this character had so much potential and it's lazy of the writers to just dump him like that. And the fact that they are replacing him with the insufferable character Thor doesn't make it a whole lot better!
Harvey Milk: You gotta give 'em hope.
That´s good news
With Sleazeman gone and Thor getting more screentime that is 2 good things in one. Now I´m looking forward to the next season even more.
And while it´s true that you often hear "oh, this new season of show X is gonna be totally gay, just wait and see" and then it turns out to be nothing but pseudo-lesbian seconds for sweeps I don´t think (hope) the creators of NJ are gonna pull a cheap stunt like that. If they do I can just stop watching and have more time for masturbation. I win either way.
Wow. A lot of over investment in this thread
May I just point out that "The character has run its course"
could just be a euphemism for something else? I have NO inside info about this and am not even speculating about THIS particular situation, but in past situations where an actor gets suddenly dropped it could be for a whole host of reasons. The actor has personal problems. The actor refused to do what the role required. The actor was really really hard to work with.
And sometimes when creators/writers say the "character has run its course" they are simply being polite and not making the actor look bad.
My point is why assume the show's creators are at fault here? After all, they created the character. Surely they didn't want to just lose the character either.
Although you make a valid
Oh yeah? Well tell that to...
Ashleigh Simpson Wentz and Colin Egglesfield!
Oh wait, possibly not the best counter-examples.
I think that is a clear case
The Truth
No...
As beentheredonethat wrote - sometimes things happen behind the scenes. And obviously Linda Wallem was doing the very nice producer code speak. And perhaps Sleiman was being a diva and wanted the production to end (which as an actor with no storyline and character arc whatsoever in the series isn't beyond the bounds of possiblity).
But, putting my superficial hat on, NOOOOOOOOOOO.... he was so lovely to look at. I can't believe I won't be getting to see more of Mo-Mo. And i don't mean more like that... well perhaps a little bit. :)
Beyond that, I'm sure the second series will be as strong as the first.
