Republican audience boos retired gay general during CNN's YouTube debate

Keith Kerr, a 43-year military veteran and retired brigadier general was one of the ones chosen to ask a question in Wednesday nights CNN/YouTube debate. The only problem is that the Republican audience booed Kerr as they tried to shout him down during a follow-up. Classy, huh? Why should that surprise anyone. After all, it's Bush who let soldiers languish in horrendous conditions at the Walter Reed Hospital.

Kerr specifically asked the Republican candidates including Rudy Giuliani, Mitt Romney and Representative Duncan Hunter why "American men and women in uniform are not professional enough to serve with gays and lesbians?"

Romney, who was for gays in the military before he was against it, dodged the question when pressed by the debate's host Anderson Cooper. Romney said he'd have to consult with the military. Governor Mike Huckabee said, “People have a right to have whatever feelings, whatever attitudes they wish. But when their conduct could put at risk the morale or put at risk even the cohesion that Duncan Hunter spoke of, I think that’s what is at issue, and that’s why our policy is what it is.”

Huckabee referred to Hunter's convoluted response which was:

“And the reason for that, even though people point to the Israelis and point to the Brits and point to other people as having homosexuals serve, is that most Americans, most kids who leave that breakfast table and go out and serve in the military, make that corporate decision with their family, most of them are conservatives, and they have conservative values, and they have Judeo-Christian values. And to force those people to work in a small, tight unit with somebody who is openly homosexual, who goes against what they believe to be their principles -- and it is their principles -- is I think a disservice to them. And I agree with Colin Powell that it would be bad for unit cohesion.”

That makes sense since this isn't actually a Democracy or anything and the bigotry of a few should certainly trump the rights of minorities. Oy. You can see a clip of Kerr being interviewed after the jump.

    ack. too much to say!!

"most kids who leave that breakfast table and go out and serve in the military, make that corporate decision with their family, most of them are conservatives, and they have conservative values, and they have Judeo-Christian values. And to force those people to work in a small, tight unit with somebody who is openly ___________."

you know if they were to have filled in that blank with anything else people would be up in arms. oh wait, its the republicans...nevermind.

and, i'm also wondering, exactly what percentage of the armed forces are comprised of these perfectly principled conservative christians? i mean no disrespect to the people who serve honorably in the military, but it is also a well-known fact that quite a few inductees are highschool dropouts, young people with no direction, or avoiding a jail sentence. this was especially common in the small town i grew up in. they've even recently relaxed regulations saying that convicted felons can now serve since they're running so low on recruits.

actually, now that i think about it, i don't wany my homos anywhere near christians and felons.

    It's really great that a

It's really great that a Republican candidate for president has openly declared his view that the United States military is an official arm of the Christian religion. Really, that's great.

What is that noise I hear?

Is it the distant sound of the USA going down the proverbial "tubes"? I think so if they elect a conservative Republican president in 2008. I am cautiously optimistic though that there are enough Americans with common sense and decency (not to mention a thorough understanding of their country's ideals) not to let this happen. As for the comments of Mr. Hunter, what can I say? Another person who is living in an unreal world that only exists in his imagination. Cheers JBE

Liars and hypocrites, the lot of them

They booed a retired brigadier general, how classy. I'll remember that next time I see a "Support our troops" magnetic sticker on a car with a "W" sticker as well.

Mike Huckabucks is a dangerous homophobe who would sell out his grandmother to line his own pockets.  I know; I lived in Arkansas during most of his time as governor.  He was petty, self-important, and vindicative.  And those were his GOOD qualities.  He slipped into office through the back door when the REAL governor fell prey to Ken Starr and his minions.  He led the fight to get a convicted rapist (his victim was a distant cousing of Bill Clinton) out of prison so he could rape and murder again.  And he tried to shut down the only newspaper in the state that had the temerity to stand up to him.  His only claim to fame nationally, apart from his petulance and jokes at his home state's expense (he once called Arkansas a "Banana Republic" on Imus), is that he lost a hundred pounds after (rumored) bariatric surgery, then wrote a book called "Digging Your Own Grave With a Knife and Fork."  Now,  according to the press, he's the "nice guy" in the race.  He's a pip, all right.

And wait till you get a load of Dammit, Janet! (the Missus Huckster).

    Instead of Running for President

maybe he should do some real good and become the poster child for the Health Department and its' fight against obesity!  Love your comment about "And those were his GOOD qualities." (LOL).  I never thought I would say this but he makes me appreciate the Canadian politicians (even the conservative ones).

    Openly Bigoted and Discriminating A-Holes

It really is infuriating that I have to pay taxes so that these anti-gay bigots can implement policies that discriminate against people like us.

The shear hatred the Republican Party openly and proudly expresses should drive them out of office on all levels. However, apparently it does not. Why? Because too many Americans still are backward, prejudiced, bigoted A-Holes.

    People wonder

what happened to those white conservative bigots who used to vote Democratic in the South.  They switched to the Republican Party in 1980 under Ronald Reagan and remain there.  Attitudes towards gays are changing in the USA but not nearly as fast as other parts of Western Society mainly due to this block of voters and the politicians (such as Huckabee) who pander to them.

    That was a horrible display

That was a horrible display last night at the Republican Youtube debate.  I felt neaseous watching last night.  And to think the world had to see our possible next offering as president of the USA. I truly felt embarrassed for this country.

It sickens me that they keep bringing up religion and how we are a christian nation...WTF!! American is not a christian nation!! In fact, looking back at the founding fathers, this is exactly what they didn't want to happen...the mixing of religion and politics. It's so difficult for me coming from England to adjust to all this religious and family values talk in politics. And the fact that the Republicans, Evangelical christans and fundamentalist  want to deny basic human dignity and equality to others just because they are gay is so very sad. But then again, what do we expect since these same people are the ones who believe that the earth was made in seven days, Noah's arc and Eve came out of Adam's rib. I'm telling you, if religious fundamentals had a hold of this country we would still be living in the dark ages. It's bad enough that progess in this country has come to a full stop for the last seven years under this administration.

And good for the general for standing up and asking about the failure of "Don't ask, Don't tell."  But damn scary at the response from the candidates and the booing in the crowd. I just couldn't believe that they would be so disrepectful to this man who served this country for decades.  The fact that England, Israel and some other countries  have openly gay soldiers who've been serving for years and the army remains strong, professional and with great leadership, goes to show that it is pure homophobia in this country that is driving the "Don't ask, Don't tell" failed policy.

    What I found truly

scary Maxine is that they were all old, and white, and probably rich (well Romney is not old but he is certainly rich).  No women, no "visible minorities".  I was thinking to myself this could be 1960!  What sane person could honestly say they represent the majority of Americans!

Your comments about the English and Israeli armies are dead on.  I can't think of two more professional or competent fighting forces in the world, the US would be wise to follow their example.

    Cheers
