Retired 49er quarterback Steve Young and wife come out against Proposition 8

Being a lifelong professional football fan, I can't help but be all too aware of the homophobia that pervades much of the sport. So I'm always delighted when I see someone I've admired for the way they play game, also be admirable for their stance on gay rights issues.

This weekend, Steve Young and his wife, Barb Young, made it clear they don't support anti-gay discrimination in California by coming out publicly against Proposition 8 and donating $50,000 to help defeat the measure. Via Equality California, Barb Young issued a statement saying "We believe all families matter, and we do not believe in discrimination, therefore, our family will vote against Prop. 8." The lawn of the Young home also sports No on 8 signs. (Note: While it is Barb Young's name on the check to No on 8, she also made another statement making it clear that Steve agrees with and supports her.)

It should be noted that Young, a Hall of Fame player and MVP of Super Bowl XXIX, isn't just any old retired NFL quarterback. He's also a member of the Mormon Church that has poured millions of dollars into into passing Proposition 8. And Young isn't any old Mormon either — he's a direct descendant of Brigham Young (the second president of the Mormon church) and has been one of the church's most visible Mormons. Frankly, the Youngs' stance on Proposition 8 is rather shocking given how invested the Mormon church is in passing the anti-gay amendment.

Kudos to the Youngs for speaking out in favor of equality for all!

In the interest of

In the interest of disclosure, though, it appears that Mrs. Young is the force behind the opposition to Prop 8 in the Young household - Steve Young is NOT taking a stand:

From the SF Gate article:

"To expand on my earlier email, I am very passionate about this issue and Steve is completely supportive of me and my work for equality. We both love our Church and are grateful that our Church encourages us to vote our conscience. Steve prefers not to get involved politically on any issue no matter what the cause and therefore makes no endorsement."

That's a cop-out

The signs are on their lawn.  Unless the check came from her own checking account fed by her own income, he's endorsing her position.

He wants plausible deniability due to his standing with the Mormon church.  No courage. I hope the church doesn't let him get away with this tactic. It's shameful.

Steve does not take a stance politically

I have a personal friend who is very close to Steve and Barbara. Steve has not taken a stance on Prop 8 either way, his wife has!

They are both good people. They are both active members of the LDS Church.

It reads to me as

if Steve is not taking a more public stance due to his standing with the church, but is letting his wife make his feelings known very clearly. As his wife said, "Steve is completely supportive of me and my work for equality." Would it be great if he were out doing No on 8 commercials? Yes. Do I think he is still sending a message that I approve of? Again, yes.

Hiding behind skirts?

Evidently Steve is a coward.  He has no business in the Mormon church either.

SEXIST MUCH

Seriously. In 2008? "hiding behind skirts?"

If there are signs in the yard. . .

it means that he definitely is against Prop 8.  People don't normally put signs in their yard or donate a lot of money, unless everyone in the house supports the position.

It's kind of suprising that the Youngs would be so vocal about it, but I guess it shouldn't be too suprising given that they lived in San Francisco for all those years.

Kudos to the Young family for standing up for equality, and against their own church.

Steve Young and Teri Hatcher

When Teri was still married to John Tenney she had a crush on Steve Young and asked him to be a guest of LOIS AND CLARK.  To her surprise he accepted.  He just seems like a very cool guy.  Not all Mormons are bad people and for Prop 8.

God gives us free will and voting is free will, he also wants us to do the right thing. Voting on No on 8 is the right thing.

Be rational and vote your conscience.

Mormons

I say this is really great. I think it's wonderful that this couple has been public about their opposition to this.

My family is (mostly) Mormon and this has created a huge schism. The church itself has gone out of it's way to support this amendment, continuing the Mormon church's history of being on the wrong side of every civil rights issue.  I know that there are individual Mormons who don't just automatically do what the church tells them and they are to be praised for this.

DEATH TO THE RIGHT WING 's picture

Who cares? The more people who try to kill Prop 8 the better!!!

One of the greatest phenomenons since the discovery of Evolution has to be the irreducibe stipidity of the American public. Even in California, the citizens are so ignorant and clueless about what their opinions are on an idea (that is, if they even understand what an idea is, let alone the difference between and idea and a concept) they will vote against Prop 8 if they think Steve Young is against it -- and for once, their blatant idiocy might pay off here.

Make no mistake bout it, America people are historically stupid, hysterical in their fear of death, incapable of dissent, hateful toward experience and flexible thought, and are hopless romantics about living under a dictator -- even if they lie to themselves and claim they want a democracy -- which they don't. Americans don't want to think for themselves in any fassion. Yet, they are so out of touch with their own though process they don't even uderstand their own desires to live in a dictatorial republic.

Fuck America, fuck national pride, fuck monotheism, and fuck you if you think you are outiside this type of stupidity.

Fuck prop 8!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

More irony

How about:

"hopless romantics" (what good is a romantic without hop?)

"fassion"

"their own though process"

"outiside"

If someone wants to rant about the stupidity (or "stipidity") of others they should probably learn to spell first....

Yes For Prop 8

Steve Young is a great guy and in my opinion has truly really been a great example for the independent mind of the Mormon church. Mormons are great and truly try to speak their Christian values.

Yes on Prop 8!!!

Yes on Prop 8!!!

You praise Young for breaking with the Mormon church but you repeat "Yes on Prop 8" which is the Mormon church's view.  I think you meant NO on Prop 8.  NO preserves existing gay marriages in CA.  YES eliminated gay marriages but does not touch gay civil unions which we also have.

I think these two "yes's"

are precisely that: they support Prop. 8. Why they're on a gay site doing that, I don't quite know....

Please ignore the "Yes on 8" trolls...

These first-time posters will most likely never sign on again - they're just trying to stir up arguments and confusion. They'll be gone after tomorrow anyway.
