Smoking pot makes you gay! And hot! And incestuous!

Those helpful Public Service Announcements produced by the Department of Good Intentions have probably been around since cavemen first scrawled on rock walls (hunting mammoth drunk BAD!). We all remember those PSA's warning you not to touch yourself or you'd get hairy palms try drugs or you'd walk off a high rise or play Dungeons and Dragons lest you end up sacrificing babies to Beezlebub. Well, via our friend John over at New Now Next, we can tell you Canada MTV has a new anti-drug PSA out that seems to indicate toking weed will drive you to start kissing other guys--really inappropriate guys.

I can't find a YouTube clip so you'll have to go to Advertising Age to watch the whole thing. On the plus side, no one leaps up and rips out chest hair or gets whacked with a tire iron after the kiss. On the down side, what message are they sending here? At first it seems to be implying that pot will mess you up so bad that you'll kiss another guy, but then there is the "twist" and you see that twist is supposed to be the messed up aspect. Still, I think it is a pretty mixed message that doesn't entirely work. I can't say I about crazy about it. What do you think? Is my sense of humor in need of a tune up?

(FYI, there isn't any dope out there strong enough to cause me to kiss my brother! No offense, Chris!)

I don't know if it was homophobic or not, but it was completely boring.

There's nothing boring...

...about two hot guys kissing!  The one behind the wheel is so totally my type...sigh.

I asked around the

I asked around the office (I love being a professional queer activist, I work with a dozen LGBT folks) and the general consensus seems to be that it's not the most overtly homophobic thing ever, but it does play to homophobia. That if the guys hadn't been brothers, it would be obvious homophobia (because suggesting that kissing boys is the bad result of getting high is homophobic)... but instead the commercial takes focus away from the homophobia by adding incest to the mix. But it doesn't exonerate the homophobia. Would the commercial have been as "successful" if the kissing siblings had been opposite-gender? No, because we presume that these two guys are also straight, and that the kiss was therefore taboo and shameful on two levels: gay and incest. For the message to communicate effectively ("pot makes you do stupid things") the advertisers are really expecting you to believe that kissing another dude AND kissing a sibling are things you wouldn't normally want to do.

To completely negate the implied heterosexism, they would have had to establish the guys as gay or bisexual or curious before the kiss (i.e., "take a look at that guy, bet he's not single.") then landing the "brothers" punchline. However, that would have only reinforced stereotypes about us homos being perverts without moral, social or ethical boundaries to our sexual urges. So, no, the commercial was an offensive idea from beginning to end.

You're Kidding, Right?

I didn't see any homophobia.  All the commercial is saying is that smoking pot makes you do dumb things like kiss your brother.  And why are we assuming that these guys are straight?  It doesn't allude to their sexuality.  They could've been gay and making out would've been just as wrong.  Though if that's wrong, I don't wanna be right.  Frankly, it's a cute commercial and I think this is a case of looking for homophobia where there isn't any.

I agree

Good post, Tyreseus. That ad was weird and vaguely offensive; I'm surprised it even got on the air.

I'm curious as to who the guy in the backseat is. A family friend wouldn't ask, "Aren't you guys brothers?" Is a dealer or a piece they planned on tag teaming?

I think the guy in the backseat is jealous and intended to get into the pants of both brothers. I would.
And I don't see why incest between brothers is bad. They can't have kids, which is the only reasonable reason to prevent incest.
And no, this isn't a comment on my own life :)

Years Ago...

... I dated a guy who had a gay brother and he told me that he and his brother had sex with each other from time to time. At the time I found it quite shocking, but he acted like it was no big deal (and when I met the brother and saw how smoking hot he was I understood why). I wonder if this is a usual occurrence between gay brothers.

Funny!

It made me laugh I thought it was pretty funny. I wasn't offended at all!

I think it might be quite successfully. With MTV viewers.

I don't like it

It lumps together homosexuality and incest, which is something anti-gay activists are all too quick to do. The fact that a few of the responses to this post indicate that gay incest is not a bad thing only gives ammunition to those who call the LGBT community immoral. Plus, it's not very funny. A really awkward attempt to scare adolescent males out of doing drugs. :/

That was hot!

Which means the advertisement wasn't effective. It glorified incest and drugs...

I don't really think it's

I don't really think it's hoimophobic but it does take the idea of homophobia and then turns it on his head.  It uses the straights' unease of same-sex kissing and actually mocks it.  Implicitly, it's saying that if you think 2 guys kissing is bad, there are worse things in the world.  All in all, I think we gays are very extra-sensitive to slights (not that it isn't warranted) and sometimes, we think something is homophobic when it really isn't.
