TCA Update: Brothers & Sisters Scoop!

Yesterday I had the opportunity to visit the Brothers & Sisters set where I chatted with Matthew Rhys who plays Kevin Walker, Ron Rifkin who plays Uncle Saul, and the show's executive producer Jon Robin Baitz. Friday's BEST.GAY.WEEK.EVER! will have all the details, but right now I thought I'd share some news Baitz revealed during the set visit. We'd already heard that Kevin's first love interest on the show -- Scotty Wandell played by Luke MacFarlane -- would be back for an episode. But for all you Scotty lovers I have good great news -- Scotty will be back for seven episodes and Baitz told me a little more about the character. Here is everything I learned about Luke, plus a few other details.

  • The show returns Sundays at 10 PM starting September 30.
  • Eric Winters is only back for one episode, but that could change. He was actually on the set during the visit though I didn't have time to chat with him. I'm happy to report he is just as handsome in person as on TV. (And Matthew Rhys is better looking in real life. TV just doesn't do him justice!)
  • When asked if Kevin and Scotty would get back together, Baitz said: "We're really interested in exploring what it could mean for these two characters to get to know each other even more than they have. Not just romantically, but truly as friends; as people who can talk to each other. So you're going to see that storyline evolve surprisingly. I don't want to tell too much. I think having him back is such a delight. Where we find him when we come back is a man trying to pull his life together and I take really special care with those characters -- Kevin and Scotty."
  • When asked about whether Luke was back because of fan reaction and his chemistry with Matthew: "I always knew that it was extraordinary and they freedom they had is why it is working so well and they're such great strong actors. Everyone agreed. The studio. The network. The people who loved the show -- so it was a given."
More to come!

Absolutely fookin'

Absolutely fookin' great...that big oaf of a stereotypical character will be back on our screens. You wouldn't get that if this show was British, I tell ya and I don't care if Scotty is Kevin's Mr. Big. Kevin and Scotty just don't seem right even if they are only going down the 'friends' route for season 2. I mean, pfft, do your really expect us to fall for that anyway Baitz? Because we soo know that you're going to bow to fan pressure and get them together in the end. Oh pulease, where is Russel T. Davies when you need him.

/* Minces off and throws a queeny tantrum just like Scotty would do.

I would have to agree with you, Jason

You hit the nail righto on the head.  Scotty does nothing for me and I just never got how Kevin would be attracted to him.

I'm actually (probably one of the few) who is actually looking forward to Viva Laughlin, but if that show has to die in order to bring back Eric Winters, then so be it.

Hey, They Deserve Each Other

I'm still trying to figure out why anyone in their right minds would be attracted to Kevin. He's an arrogant, self-righteous, deceitful, self-deluding, pompous pr**k... and one of the less sympathetic characters on the series. I'd rather spend a week with Holly than a dinner with Kevin... and I ain't real fond of her.

I've actually been impressed that Jason Lewis and Eric Winters could convincingly play characters who found this guy appealing.

Frankly, I think Scotty is an excellent foil for Kevin. It may even make him more appealing... but I kinda doubt it.

P.S. I think Matthew Rhys is a handsome guy who does an excellent job of trying to make Kevin human and appealing, it's just more than any actor should be asked to do.

Scotty Returns

Scotty was effeminate in the beginning then became more masculine because of negative reaction.  I think he'll be masculine when he comes back on the show.  Toward the end of his run on season one I thought Scott was sincere and sweet.

Luke is such a talented actor.  I believed everything he did on that show as if it were real.

On a side note: I was channel surfing and stumbled upon T.R. Knight on Sesame Street.  He was a detective like in the 50's style shows.  He asked a woman that worked for him what the word of the day was.  She kept saying i.  He didn't understand what she meant.  Finally she took out a mirror and showed it to him.  He was an i.  Get it private eye.

Ok what are you trying to do...make me jealous?

I love Brothers & Sisters and enjoy watching all the cute guys on the show. If you have more pics of your visit to the set I'd love to see them!

PS - Matthew Rhys is so sexy!

I've been working with ABC to

get those pics and am pretty sure I'll have them for tomorrow's BGWE column. We weren't allowed to take our own pics, but they had a photographer there.

The Butch Police are really out in force today

Woe unto he who doesn't conform to the "straight-acting/straight-appearing" law! To hear if from you people you'd swear Scottie was flouncing around like Richard Simmons in a Tsunami. Jeez Louise!

Maybe Robbie Baitz should have them hire Isaiah Washington to be Matthrew Rhys boyfriend. He's just so butch.

I'm issuing a SASA warning to you David

Sorry, but the use of "Jeez Louise" is a direct violation of the "straight-acting / straight-appearing" law!

It's known as a Mary B514.3: Verbal tantrum inciting sighing, foot stomping or throwing hands in the air.

Be glad that nobody responded with a "get her" or "look at Mary spin" because then I'd have to issue an actual violation citation and "ugh!" all that writing.

I haven't got a problem with

I haven't got a problem with effeminate men, heck I love Sean off of Coronation Street. However, I've seen too many of them to know that it gives a false impression of gay men. We're trying to teach homophobes here, not add more false information to their already messed up beliefs. The only straight-acting gay men I mainly seem to see, are in Gay-oriented shows with copious amounts of sex thrown in. Here we have a lovely family show in Brothers & Sisters, a genre which I much prefer to watch, constantly bringing back a character which undoes all the good work that Kevin, Chad and Jason did to show a more well rounded impression of how gay men act. Homphobes are like children, you need to show them something consistantly again and again for them to learn! As soon as they see Scotty again they're going to think 'Haha, this is the 'real' gay man that they've been hiding from us! Kevin, Chad and Jason were all fakes!' I mean Matthew, Jason and Eric are all straight in real life (I presume) and so the homophobes probably think that straight actors are unable to act camp in order to conform to the gay man image.

Seriously, think about it. I'm just sick of being portrayed as something that I'm not.

Scotty and Kevin

Scotty, butch or not, is a very enedearing personality (and much more real than the horrific 'Just Jack,'). There's no doubt in my mind that Berlanti, Baitz, et al. know the yin and yang of things, so to speak. What Scotty does to Kevin is make him more human. Kevin is stereoypically non-comital and promiscuous (remember his tryst in boot camp?) ... The actual point here is to go beyond the butch/fem polarity, because everyone--straight or gay--are somewhere in between. You want butch? Go watch UFC. (Not that there's anything wrong with that!) Some people call Brazilian Jiu-jitsu a nelly sport because of all the body contact ...I digress:

Anyway, how good is it to have a major network television show depicting gay men as real human beings with all their parts working and as part of a network of friends, relations, i.e. in the real world doing things and making the same mistakes that real people-both nelly and butch-make.

...

Well, I knew this would happen since McFarlane's pilot bombed. I never understood why people liked Scotty so much - was it because he was the first love interest or...? I don't know. He was just as unlikeable as people say Kevin is, since he was always nagging Kevin about how he was "liek OMG not out enough!!111!" and all that. Whatever. Hopefully it's only for those seven episodes...
