"The View"'s Elisabeth Hasselbeck and Sherri Shepherd spread misinformation again
The View has never exactly been a font of accurate information and, really, what would you expect when one of the hosts (Elisabeth Hasselbeck) found fame on Survivor. But given that the show is the creation of journalist Barbara Walters, you'd think she would at least require a modicum of knowledge from Hasselbeck and co-host Sherri Shepherd before they open their traps about topics other than their kids. But such is clearly not the case as the two demonstrated on Friday's show when they spread all sorts of misinformation about California's Proposition 8. Read what the two had to say after the jump. Hasselbeck babbled first bringing up the case of Ake Green, a Swedish priest who ran afoul of that country's hate speech law when he preached that gays are a "deep cancer on society". But according to Hasselbeck what happened was:
Um excuse me, but WTF does Sweden have to do with Proposition 8? Um, different country, different laws. By that logic, I can point out that Iran puts gay people to death so that "precedent" clearly indicates Christians in America are likely to do the same if we're not careful. Not only was Hasselbeck wrong about Pastor Green's offense, but she also didn't know his conviction was overturned on appeal based on freedom of speech and freedom of religion (and I don't think he spent a single night in jail). Conservatives such as Hasselbeck love to fret over this slippery slope when, in fact, there is a very bright legal line in this country protecting religious views. We gay folks know all too well that it is the religious types who in fact are trying to use the law to give their religious beliefs preferential treatment. Clearly Hasselbeck was getting her information from some wingnut talking points and given that she's never demonstrated any interest in thinking for herself, it's no surprise she didn't bother to check the information. Not to be out done, Shepherd then proceeded to distort the ramifications of Proposition 8 by claiming:
Oh, puhleeze! All Shepherd would have to do is read a couple of newspaper articles about the initiative to know that the Proposition 8 did nothing of the sort. It only pertained to state officials, but to folks such as Shepherd, religious marriage is a state and/or civil issue and therefore laws regulating it must apply to churches. Again, someone has been reading her talking points. I used to appreciate that The View covered gay topics, but if Joy Behar isn't present and with Rosie gone, these two get away with spouting inaccurate information far too often. Frankly, if the show can't present more accurate information, they should just stick to discussing whatever lame reality show has captured Elisabeth's attention. And a special boo to Barbara herself, the one who is supposed to be a genuine journalist, for either not knowing the actual facts or for not stepping in and setting the record straight right away. Here is the clip. I haven't seen today's episode, but the show reportedly sets the record straight. Too bad they didn't make Hasselbeck and and Shepherd wear dunce caps. Thanks to Media Matters for the clip! And GoodAsYou has just posted today's clip. Submitted by on Mon, 2008-11-10 12:49. this show...Submitted by

boyd (646 points) (156 posts) on Mon, 2008-11-10 18:12.The reason The View is still on-air and makes such good television is that the show features 3 to 5 unvarnished voices, spouting opinions on everything. This set-up can prove amazingly effectively -- for example when the View Ladies just kept picking at John and Cindy McCain when the couple visited the show just after the Republican convention. The format was effective -- because the focus was on how (poorly) John and Cindy navigated the conversation. However, the show's format has ALWAYS been atrocious during Hot Topics. While I'm annoyed by the misrepresenations associated with Prop 8 and marriage equality in general in the 11/7 Hot Topic segment, have you seen these ladies tackle global warming, abortion, child predator laws, or energy indepence? Holy crap! I've seen the ladies mangle facts on all four of these important topics and claim that each topic is just a material of differing opinions. Not saying it's okay to be ill-informed and on television. Just saying that the View is built around passionate opinion-spouting. And since the show not a 'news' show, I don't see anything changing... Besides, B. Walters gave up being a journalist some time in the early 80s...
Whoopi set the recordSubmitted by
FAII (578 points) (130 posts) on Mon, 2008-11-10 17:41.Whoopi set the record straight, Sherri babbled on more about how very little she knew about this issue (but she had no problems babbling on, anyway!) and Elisabeth spread even more lies! She said 3-4 times that Prop 8 was passed by 62%. Which, as we know, is an utter lie. Not one of the other ladies had any kind of reaction to it. No one corrected Elisabeth on Pastor Åke Green, and Elisabeth, yet again, brought it up. Someone needs to start a letter writing campaign to have that lie- and hatred spewing Hasselnut taken off the show. Sherri Sheperd, Flat Earth Society MemberSubmitted by
the herald (995 points) (263 posts) on Mon, 2008-11-10 18:03.went on and on, "well, that's from GLAAD, I'd like hear from the other side..." Uh, GLAAD quoted from the actual court ruling, you complete idiot. It's not GLAAD's opinion. It's the ACTUAL court ruling. There is no "other side". Then she continued to go on about her pastor getting arrested for speaking out agains gays, without backing up this absurd hypothetical in ANY WAY AT ALL. And no one called her on it! No one said, "where do you get that information, Sherri?" NOTHING. She just flat-out made it up, or heard it from someone who made it up. I've never been more disgusted with a human being in my entire life. She willfully embraces ignorance like a badge of honor. Then she had the nerve to talk about not having gotten around to buying Ellen and Portia's wedding gift yet. Are you f**king kidding me?! "Congratulations, ladies! If I had my way, you would be forced to split up! Here, have a toater oven!"

Please remember, Babs is a Mafia Princess. Her father Lou Walters ran "The Latin Quarter" -- the chicest Mafia front nightclub in New York in the 50's. Roy was a mob lawyer and thus was there a lot -- fucking every busboy that crossed his path. He'd take Babs out on "datest" -- often as not with his fuck for the evening in tow. She would tell him how "lonely" he was going to be living alone. He'd nod sympathetically, take her home, give her a goodnight kiss, and then go back to his place with the trick to get plowed.

Charles (471 points) (94 posts) on Tue, 2008-11-11 16:31.There needs to be a better argument for firing these two bimbos. By the way, if anyone thinks me using the word bimbo is a sexist word, look up how Bill Maher used the word on the show for how I am using it now. Stupidity prevails on television so no one can really argue that they should be dumped because of that. It's time to use the argument of feminism. Women should stand up and say that by allowing these two stupid-and-proud voices to remain on television, the ABC television network is demeaning women. Unfortunately there is a group of people that actually like Hassselbeck and Shepherd. And as long as there are idiots who love drinking the Kool-Aid these idiots provide out of their mouths everyday, then they will stay on the small screen dispensing their Kool-Aid for all to digest whether we want to or not. |

That was painful
I watched on Friday and, as appalling as Elisabeth and Sherri were, I was most frustrated by how Barbara Walters seemed to use impartiality as an excuse for being uninformed. She's just repeating the arguments, but apparently it'd be partisan to try to hold up those arguments against reality. Who needs facts when you've managed to talk to "both sides"? I expect Elisabeth and Sherri to be uninformed, but my last shreds of respect for Walters completely disappeared on Friday.
As for the argument that churches would be sued to marry same-sex couples against their will... well, has anything like that happened so far? AFIK, churches are allowed to discriminate for various reasons -- for example, I believe you still can't get married in a Catholic church if you were divorced. Has there ever been an attempt to take down those restrictions?
Barbara Walters Should be ASHAMED
