"Trauma" (15.10) Recap: Thank YouOn Monday night's Trauma we had the obligatory Thanksgiving episode featuring heartwarming stories (plane crash aside), but this outing also included a nice helping of gay cranberry sauce as Boone encouraged Tyler to finally come out to his parents.
I really like how the show continues to explore this aspect of their relationship. Boone is getting more comfortable with the fact Tyler is gay. In fact, check out just how comfortable.
Another nice scene between the two, and I like the way they are making Boone much more tolerant even if he still doesn't entirely get it. That being said, we have seen this sort of storyline before and I'd actually be interested in seeing these two get to the heart of Boone's homophobia — his religious beliefs. That would actually be something novel on television. There was only one scene that struck me as out of place. Yes, Tyler is a bit of an outrageous bomb thrower, but I didn't really buy his doing this. Here is the entire episode which was sweet if fairly predictable. But for our U.S. readers, if you're flying anywhere for Thanksgiving, you might not watch the whole thing. There is one more episode next week and then six more next year. Why Boone Is Homophobic
Thank You Michael Jensen!
Thank you so much for pointing out something that most gay media outlets seem to think is insignificant when it comes to African American folks who are homophobic.
We shouldn't have to wait for Rod2.0 or some other black gay journalist to point this kind of stuff out or lay it out for folks to see.
Just like with most homophobic White folks in the United States, the homophobia that exists in the African American communities stems from RELIGION, not race or ethnicity or culture.
Fundamentalist, Evangelical Christianity is the overarching cause of the homophobia that many white journalist just project far too easily and unfairly on to all Black folks (regardless of their actual views on gay rights or homosexuality)
Just like with every other demographic, homophobia is something that is taught to most Black folks through RELIGION.
Of course it is hypocritical, of course it is contradictory. Name one biased, supposedly Christian "belief" perpetuated by fundamentalist in modern society that isn't hypocritical or contradictory regardless of who's doing the "believing"
I really do hope the show goes there at some point and really breaks down the misconceptions and falsities of Boone's beliefs because I think it speaks to the heart of an issue that I feel created deep divides between African American straight folks and White gay folks and that divide was demonstrated vividly during the vote for Prop 8.
Black gays KNOW it's about religion, not race, when it comes to homophobia in Black communities.
But it's something many white gay columnists and media outlets don't seem to get or don't want to get or just dismiss.
Every single time someone on this site and others just throws out the phrase "homophobia in the Black community" without claryfing itsnature or specifing WHO the homophopbia peddlers are, it's like a smack across the face of straight Black gay allies and actual Black gay folks .
I would love to actually get to see Boone struggles with with his religious beliefs in a constructive and realistic way given what he now knows about Tyler.
Your insight is very much appreciated.
Cheers.
Much as i agree with you
on several points - it will be a cold day in you-know-where when prime time really takes on non-fringe religion.
I guess in the hysteria after prop 8 it was easy to be bitter about whole communities - hey, I'd hate to be a Mormon in a gay-predominant neighborhood.
No easy answer
Religion is a part of it for some people but I know plenty of non-religious liberal folk who are homophobes.
Homophobia is just a part of the human condition like racism. Even out of the closet gay people sometimes show a bit of homophobia. They will look down there noses to the drag queens or the really effeminate men in the gay community and stuff like that.
