TCA Exclusive! NBC's "Trauma" to feature gay paramedic!
Here's some news that should gladden GLAAD's heart (not to mention ours!): I've confirmed exclusively that NBC's new medical drama Trauma is going to include a major gay character as part of its cast. Set in San Francisco, this is an "intense, action-packed look at one of the most dangerous medical professions in the world: first responder paramedics." And one of those first responders is going to be an out gay man or woman. So who might the gay be? Well, just like we did with my scoop from last year about Southland, we're going to play "Guess the Gay!" (This time I actually know the answer, but can't divulge.) So here are the candidates:
Cameron Boone (Derek Luke), a "stoic paramedic"
Tyler Briggs (Kevin Rankin) an "edgy EMT"
Glenn Morris (Taylor Kinney), a "rookie EMT"
Marisa Benez (Aimee Garcia),
as a "tough rookie helicopter pilot"
Dr. Joe Saviano (Jamey Sheridan) as the "paramedic's mentor"
Nancy Carnahan (Anastasia Griffith) a
"strong-willed paramedic"
Reuben "Rabbit" Palchuk (Cliff Curtis), a "daredevil flight
medic As I said above, I know the identity of the gay character, but you'll have to wait for now to find out who it is. However, feel free to guess away in the comments! I will tell you that the show's executive producers Dario Scardapane and Jeffrey Reiner told me it was important that a show set in San Francisco include a gay character and that they wanted to avoid the cliched coming out storyline. Kudos to them for that. I've seen the pilot and I have to say, I certainly didn't realize this character was gay and Scardapane and Reiner told me the "reveal" is fun and different. And even though I'm not a fan of medical dramas, I rather liked this one. Here's hoping it lasts longer than Kings. Trauma premieres Monday September 28th. Now let the guessing begin! All of the above,
All of the above, please.
My vote is on either of the last two though.
The rookie, please
Just being selfish, but I'm hoping for that bearded (pardon the pun) rookie, Glenn Morris. But that's just for my own fantasy life.
There are a lot of great choices there, and it would be great if they had a LGBT of color on the show. There's more than one to choose from.
Who's the gay
I'm voting for some rookie nookie! That Glenn Morris is H. O. T. !!!!
The lucky Rabbit
It has to be the Rabbit.
How singularly innocent I look this morning.
Silly rabbit...
I'll take 'daredevil' Rabbit over the Rookie any day. I'm sure he has a couple tricks up his sleeve that would keep anyone happy...

Chuckles!
OMG!
The guy with the beard! Please! My shallow side (and that's the only side that matters when I'm watching TV, sue me!) wants it to be the hottest guy.
OTOH, I absolutely hate medical shows. So if it's one of the chicks, I have no reason or responsobility to watch. Lord knows I have to watch enough TV already.......
Glenn Morris!
poor snicks....
you've been so obsessed with Gerard Butler lately... i hate to break this to you BUT HE'S MINE! GERARD BUTLER IS MINE! ALL MINE! - now where can i boil me some rabbit?
The rookie is a really cute bear. but i think he'll be the sterotypical jock of the group. but it would sure be refreshing to have the big handsome jock as the gay one.
I'm afraid
that this one is gonna go to the ladies - that female "tough rookie helicopter pilot" description just screams Hollywood-style lesbian to me.
On the other hand, kudos to the exec producers for actually including a gay character in the regular cast of a San Francisco-set show!
Kudos? Really?
Kudos, for putting a gay character on a San Fran based show? My snarky side says we ought to be voting on who the token straight character is.
I don't know who it is (Michael's not even sharing with us here in the Blungeon©(I owe snicks a royalty for using his word)), but I seriously doubt it's going to the ladies if Michael managed a blog post here, on the boys side. Could be wrong, but doubt it.
Hey, we gotta encourage them!!
Hmmm...
I need new glasses.
I read the title as "gay pandemic" -- which means either we actually are contagious or, sweet, a sentient, homosexual virus.
I would watch a show about either, ngl.
Re: Guess who the gay character is?
I'm wondering if it's the guy whose name is Taylor Kinney, lol. Queer As Folk fans would remember that that was the last names of the main couple on the show-Justin Taylor and Brian Kinney.
I would like it if it were him,or the woman. There aren't any lesbians on network tv-none that I can think of. I'm not talking about cable when I say that,I mean just the three major ones.
I also hope it lasts longer than Kings, and is given a better shot at succeeding.
RFLMAO, what a weird coincidence that is!
He could literally be their love child (if it were set 20 years in the future)! Too bad that's the actor's actual name, and not the character's name cuz it doesn't get us any closer to figuring out if he's the gay character on the show.
Personally, I hope its Rabbit. Having seen the actors previous work, he could definitely do very well in such a role.

RE:weird coincidence
I actually tried to edit my post to say that the writers might have been inspired to make the "gay paramedic" be the actor whose name is Taylor Kinney because it is such a funny coincidence, lol, but I guess that didn't go through.
I see you're a member of saveiantojones-me too! Save the coffeeboy, save Torchwood!
Purple Scrubs
Talk about being indecisive
You just named half the cast.

It has to be a guy
Otherwise Michael would not be soooo happy and there would be much less hoopla.
Im tempted to vote for the edgy EMT or the rookie, not because how they look (yeah right), but because of the description, I rather have an edgy or rookie gay character than a stoic one. (You see how I got out of that one?). Although having a non white gay character would be nice too.
Now if you excuse me, Im off to google Taylor Kinney...
Trauma Gay
Why does the gay character have to be a big secret at all if there isn't going to be a big "coming out" thing?
I remember Taylor Kinney from that crazy soap Fashion House with Morgan Fairchid and Bo Derek.
If it was Cameron Boone (Derek Luke) that would definitely be different and new for a network drauma.
Sometimes
Sometimes news or information is embargoed - they'll tell reporters so they can prepare a report, but we aren't allowed to break it until after a certain date. Actually very common in entertainment reporting (even people like Ausiello, he does it all the time), and more common than we'd like to think in reporting at large. Helps build buzz at the right time for a show/event/movie/report. If there's no "public interest" in breaking something, it's fine.
Or Michael could just enjoy torturing us. We could try and tickle it out of him.
Fashion House, I never watched, but when I lived in San Diego, they filmed in these new condo across the street from my place - cranes, etc, shut down the street, asked us to not use our stereos. Pain in the rear.
Torture! Torture! No, I mean embargo. Definitely embargo.
Thank heavens...
party fairy , part imp, part
party fairy , part imp, part fool , part unrequited lover ...
boo / hiss !!! LOL .... I'm glad you're letting us guess !!
Fashion House
Oh dear, you just made me remember that FH fans would call Kinney "the face where emotion went to die". I'll keep my fingers crossed he surprises me on Trauma the way Kristen Davis did when I saw her on SatC. Funny, I was just thinking about him too.
That show was an amazing wreck, a mix of promising actors (including a pre-Lipstick Jungle Robert Buckley), some really stiff performers (including Bo Derek) with Tippi Hendren and Morgan Fairchild delivering the camp... though it was nothing compared to the shows that followed it. Wicked Games may have been a poor American's The Life and Loves of a She-Devil but, for me, that was just perfect.
Blondie or the hot black guy!
I’m thinking that “strong-willed” blonde might be a lesbian. Her stance and the description reminds me of that no nonsense lesbian from the “Wire”. If not, I'll go with the hot black guy!
I'm hoping for...
I hope
it is Glenn. I'd watch him just sit in a chair for an hour, damn! Hot!
Nice to see Jamey Sheridan in another show.
Agree about Jamey
He wore it
No way will it be the rookie
Sorry guys, but I seriously doubt the creators would make their best eye candy--and likely biggest draw for female viewers--gay.
My bet is on the "stoic" guy...only because it would be nice to see some more gay people of color on TV.
I think it's the "edgy" guy
Like most ensemble casts, I suspect each character is created to appeal to a specific audience demographic.
The rookie EMT (a.k.a. Gerard Butler's younger brother) has the John Carter ("ER") role of newbie and male eye candy. There's no way he's the gay - the producers expect him to draw in the female viewership. The blond female will be expected to do the same for the hetero male demographic.
The stoic guy and the rookie EMT will already be flying their own ethnic minority flags so I doubt either will also take on the gay mantle. Rabbit's very nickname suggests he'll probably be providing some of the comic relief. The funny gay sidekick is so overdone, so it's unlikely he's the one.
And did Michael Jensen's own headline already rule out the older doc? Which leaves Mr. Edgy to carry the rainbow banner for us.
The Mentor
I think it is Dr. Joe Saviano (Jamey Sheridan) as the "paramedic's mentor".
Great news!
Well.. Looks like we're not sure if it's going to be a male or a female paramedic.
If it's a guy I would like it to be Glenn Morris, but I think it's more likely it will be Tyler Briggs or Reuben Palchuck. Cameron Boone would be an excellent choice too. There's not many Afro American gays on tv, so he would be a welcome contribution.
Then again.. Nancy Carnahan would be nice if the gay one is a female. She is hot!
Harvey Milk: You gotta give 'em hope.
Wow...
Are there any Asian American paramedics on this show?
Well, looks like the secret is out...
The show's creators must have forgotten to tell the cast not to spill such details themselves.
For those who don't mind being spoiled as to the identity of the gay character, Greg In Hollywood has an interview with the actor/actress who portrays that role. Apparently, on the series, the audience won't find out till several episodes in.
Game Over
D'Oh!
Something about him made me wonder, but b/c he didn't stand out, I didn't think it was. Oh well, I hope that's not the most interesting aspect of the character, considering his description.

Now, the question I have is...
Hmm, I don't see why the character has to be out from get go.
It's an ensemble show and we might not learn every detail about every character right away. Frankly, I don't think it's a bad strategy to let viewers get to know the characters before revealing that particularly piece of info.
Frankly, I think this beats having our knowing he's gay in the first episode because he advises his BFF that she looks fabulous.
And how about giving the creators credit for even having this character, who at least initially, appears to break new ground. No, I don't think we shall fall all ourselves saying "Thank you, thank you, thank you" but they do deserve credit. And I know for a fact folks at the networks read our site and the comments and it disturbs me that without even having seen a single scene, they are already being criticized.
Personally, I'll hold my fire for CBS which has no regular gay characters or the Law & Order franchises, the CSI franchises and so forth, that still have no gay characters at all. And trust me, if this turns out to be a bad character or a barely there one, we'll have plenty to say.
Breaks New Ground?
This is the Money Quote
This is the quote from the interview that tells you all you need to know about how much air-time this character is going to get:
they wanted to avoid the
they wanted to avoid the cliched coming out storyline. Kudos to them for that.
good
they are gonna have a lot of competition this time around with several new medical shows appearing this year.
Looks like the "who's the gay" embargo's been broken!
The "edgy" paramedic it is!
Unfortunately, from an interview with Kevin Rankin (the actor playing Tyler Briggs), “My character Tyler is more of a peripheral character right now."
*sigh* Of course.
