In this edition of "Chewing the Fat", Brent and I ruminate over what is happening with gay teens in the popular culture. There seems to be a bit of a "moment" going on as they are popping up in various incarnations of late. Brent and I discuss the great — Luke and Noah on As The World Turns, Calvin on Greek. The barely there — possibly Ryan in High School Musical 2. And the "What you talkin' 'bout Willis — Seth in Superbad.

"Same Sex Kiss Has Fans in an Uproar"
"Is a Kiss Really Just a Kiss?"
There is a poll at the bottom of the page wherein a a full quarter of the respondents are "outraged" by the depiction of male/male affection.
The homophobes, bigots and hypocrites were out in force...
...in the reader email responses:
(From Two Scoops reader Heather.)
"As a 25+ year viewer of ATWT, while I think the show is the best it's ever been, I am very uncomfortable with the gay storyline. I understand it's something different, and it happens in real life, but some things are better left alone. I've been debating whether or not I should keep watching when the whole storyline was initially brought up, but I turned it off today, 08/17/07, and don't plan on watching the show anymore. I feel that is extremely unfair to your loyal viewers . . . simply trying to be diverse and appeal to such a very small percentage of your audience. There's something very unsettling about watching two men kiss."
(From Two Scoops Karen.)
"On 8-17-07 on "As The World Turns," I was so appalled to see two men kissing on national TV. I feel like the writers have stooped to an all-time low. I think we all know that there are gays out there, and what they do behind closed doors is their business, but I don't think anyone wants to see it on their TV screen. I have been a viewer of "As The World Turns" for many years. I would hate to give it up."
(From Two Scoops reader Lidia.)
"Today, (ATWT) went too far with Luke. I am 72 years old. I've been watching since 1956, but now I am through."
“I am outraged that ATWT would put a dramatic kiss between two male actor[s],” said ATWT fan Joanie in an email. “I have watched ATWT since I have been a young child and am disgusted with the show. It was one thing to have the characters discussing their sexual orientation but I am outraged that they would put this on the screen. I will no longer watch ATWT and I'm sure that my mother who has watched for years will feel the same as myself. I watched Y&R in the late 70's and early 80's and intend to return. You've lost a long time fan.”
“I really don't care for the close contact of Luke and Noah kissing,” writes Sheri. “My daughter watches also and I would like to see the show without the actual male to male contact. I am fine with being gay, I just would prefer not to see it on my soap that I have been watching for 30 something years. Please leave it to our imaginations. I will not watch the show if I have to watch sex and kissing among the guys. That does not make me feel sexy. I really felt uncomfortable.”
As Soapcentral.com founder Dan Kroll wrote: "Many people argue that they don’t want to see a gay storyline on television because they are not gay and cannot relate. I’m a pretty average 32-year-old white guy, but I’ve never used the “I cannot relate” comment when watching “The Cosby Show” or “The Golden Girls.” I’ve never tried to solve a murder, but I watch “CSI.” I’ve never come back from the dead, but I watch the soaps."
Soapcentral ATWT columnist Jennifer Biller also wrote: "ATWT is trying to reflect the diversity in our culture by showcasing a gay romance. Whether viewers will go for it is anyone's guess. Some viewers have complained that this story is "morally wrong" and refuse to watch it. But, where was the same moral outrage when Emily became a hooker or Alison became a porn star? Oakdale is full of morally challenged people, and it's not up to me to decide who is morally right or wrong."
As for the poll, while 24% were "outraged", 62% approved and 13% didn't see what the big deal was. Of course, anyone can vote as many times as they want in this poll, so who knows whether the numbers truly reflect ATWT's audience or not.
As for all the haters, all I can say is, there was a time when this same outrage was over the portrayal of African-Americans on tv in any capacity other than as servants. Many people were "uncomfortable" seeing them in positions of romance and authority. Mixed-race couples were considered a big no-no to show on-screen. So to Heather, Karen, Lidia, Joanie, and Sheri, I say take a good hard look at yourselves in the mirror and reflect on your bigotry, hypocrisy and homophobia. Not a pretty sight, is it?
haters just crack me up.
haters just crack me up.
...i just love how they act like this is showtime's QAF. geez, noah and luke are angelic compared to that. PFT
This was fun
You two are so cute. And I so relate with the detergent. I used to love the way my ex smelled, and he thought it was so weird that he had an extensive collection of perfumes but I get sniffy when he wears clothes just recently washed.
Anyway, I'm going to try to watch HSM 2, even if I'm a little turned off by such blatant PR. Zac and that girl are together...Really? Probably to stem the rumors that Zac bats for our team. Did you forget about Greek?
p.s. Brent, I just got to read Geography Club. Love it. I'm going to order the next one.
Awww...thanks!

You guys are so entertaining!
Always so much fun to watch....
However...I have to get something off my chest that has always bothered me, and which Brent gave voice to, which is that soap operas are viewed as, not just a "lesser" art form, but as basically, well, "stupid" crap. It always astonishes me that someone can totally accept/overlook the most eyerollingly ridiculous plot developments or scenarios in, say, a sci-fi or fantasy epic--say, for example, in the recent Sunshine (which you guys talked about glowingly, and I'd generally agree), which is basically constructed on an improbable concept and is propelled by a series of unbelievable coincidences. But, wait, if Rosanna wakes up from a 2 year coma on As the World Turns looking like she's just taken a short beauty rest, then that's looked down upon.
I've never been a big fan of sci-fi/fantasy films, but I would never disparage the genre by categorically denying the potential artistry of the genre. I'd like to think that the same view can be applied to the soap genre; some of the greatest moments in TV history, in my humble opinion, have occurred on soaps: Karen Wolek (Judith Light) on the witness stand confessing all on One Life to Live; Annie Dutton (Cynthia Watros) miscarrying her baby, then throwing herself down a flight of stairs to frame Reva (Kim Zimmer) on Guiding Light; the Richard III-like suicidal breakdown of Emily Stewart (Kelley Menighan-Hensley) just last year on ATWT. These, and many others like them, were gripping, unforgettable moments of genuine artistry.
Interesting Point!
But honestly, never having EVER seen a soap before, the conventions seem sooooo hackneyed and clunky to me.
But yeah, I obviously no longer see the conventions of sci-fi, which I love. So...yeah, you make a good point!

Lest you get swelled heads from too much praise...
...I'll refrain from using too many superlatives. However, you guys are a riot -- a bit hyper and somewhat neurotic at times, but very entertaining nonetheless.
An enthusiastic mars sign up from me! :D
Applause Applause
I agree, you guys are a hit. I loved the Vlog. As for the ATWT closed and shallow minds have spoken. They let their daughters watch people going to bed with everyone else's partner but when it comes to two adult consenting males kiss, well "I'm never watching this show again." Obviously they have watched too many soaps and their brain cells are numb.
And what is the secret, great smelling laundry detergent? It's probably cheaper than the new CK Cologne I just bought!
One more thing, the poll on the ATWT link above won't let me go to the page. My computer must have told them that its owner is gay and kisses other males!
Tivo and ATWT
I totally Tivo the show and just zip to the gay stuff. Well, unless one of the hotties pop up shirtless or wrapped in a towel. I couldn't even tell you the other storylines for a prize. Plus it records for the full hour so they get full credit from my cable service for the viewership. Although Tivo can tell what portions of a show are FF'd over...
Boy, that V-Blog was quite a roller coaster. Brent was full of a lot of...umm...energy. Very funny stuff.
Are there still plans to make Geography Club into a movie? Logo should back you on it.
Chewing The Fat
I'm always fascinated when I meet people who knew they were queer when they were teenagers. I hadn't a clue, but, then, I spent most of my life (and still do) AVOIDING people - I'm waiting for a better model of intelligent life to arrive and replace people...of course, then, I'd be phasing myself out too... :)
Having said this, I've heard of two of these shows, and have only seen one, and that was thirty odd years ago. Don't know this Greek or High School Musical, and I've only heard of Superbad because Seth Rogen (who I wouldn't mind being knocked up by, in either British or American sense - and I should add that, in Canada, the American meaning of pregnant, rather than just fucked in general, applies...) is involved. :)
Now, if only it had been chewing the fat gay teen characters - oh, that inconvenient colon. ;)
"And when the preacher asked, was I ready for the task, to love and honour you? Well, a girl should know better - and I do." BLONDIE
HSM
Man, you two really do crack me up! But I'm always interested in hearing what you have to say (well, ever since discovering this blog a week or two ago, anyway).
As for High School Musical not being gay, however.... well... It certainly has come across as being gay, to the teens who watched it. I had a look over at the discussions on the Internet Movie Database; I am assuming that most of the posters there are teens. The first film got a lot of comments as well, so I had a look right after the second film first aired, and boy did the boards light up. There are lots of interesting discussions there, in fact, mixed in with the shallower posts. And it's good to know that a lot of kids not only think the Ryan Character is gay, but don't see any problem whatsoever with that fact.
I am very surprised that no one has commented on Zac Efron prancing around in Capri pants, however---now THAT was pretty darn gay.
Quick change of topic: If you folks in future comment on some more young adult gay-oriented books (a subject near to Brent's heart, naturally), I'd be curious to hear what you think of Vintage - A Ghost Story by Steve Berman. I've only heard of the fellow a few days ago; I read this particular supernaturally teen-oriented book this evening, and loved it. I'm curious as to whether there are many more YA Fantasy titles with gay main characters out there; it's a genre I've only just begun to explore... Cheers!
Thanks
Thanks for the feedback (my "it's not gay" comment was partially tongue-in-cheek, but you've DEFINITELY got a point about the capri pants!)
VINTAGE is on our list. In fact, we were going to review it in our next episode, but we ran out of time...so it had to be pushed back a few weeks.
That FEEL FREE to recommend more books or movies! We're always looking for ideas.

Superbad
My take on Superbad was that it was about two high school boys who loved each other. In the first scene the mom asks "You too are going to miss each other." And the boys are very uncomfortable.
My take on Superbad it is simply about that - two straight boys who love each other as friends. Also it shows that men can be sensitive no matter what their orientation.
