News, Reviews & Commentary on Gay and Bisexual Men in Entertainment and the Media

Will Battlestar Galactica add a gay character? Should they?

Due to my recent trip, I'm only now getting caught up on everything I Tivoed while gone. One of the last shows I watched was the season finale of Battlestar Galactica. Coincidentally, the same day I happened to read The Advocate's article speculating that one of the show's secondary characters, Lt. Felix Gaeta (Alessandro Juliani) might be revealed as gay in the season finale. He wasn't and as the third season came to an end, BSG still lacked any real same-sex content.

Some might argue the show did introduce characters who were at least bisexual when a relationship was revealed between Baltar (James Callis), Caprica Six (Tricia Helfer), and Number Three (Lucy Lawless). And by revealed, I mean shown in bed together like some straight boy's fantasy. We don't learn the dynamics of their relationship, how it is viewed by the rest of the fleet, and, of course, Number Three dies like all evil bisexuals must.

As we've documented numerous times, the supposedly progressive genre of science fiction has done a frakking lousy job of addressing same-sex issues while taking on numerous racial, gender, and political topics. (We mean you, Star Trek.) Many reasons are given for this, especially the notion that sci fi is for 18-25 year old straight boys who don't want to see anything about gay men. Okay, but I'm supposed to believe these guys are also interested in story lines about race, gender, or politics, but would fall apart over a gay character?

I also think this is letting BSG off the hook way too easily. This is a smart, daring show that basically turned the first half of this season into a commentary on the Iraq War, has previously allowed President Roslin (Mary McDonnell) to steal an election (and a baby), and has had pretty much every other character confront a whole host of thorny ethical issues. But the only way it can present same-sex issues is with a very stereotypical male-female-female three-way? I think we can--and should--expect better from this show.

This lack of same-sex representation is ironic because I'm hardly the only gay man out there who loves science fiction. When picking a book to read or a movie to see, sci fi and fantasy are always first on my list. As a matter of fact, I think one of the first moments I truly grasped I might be gay was reading a book set in the future where all of humanity lives in mile high sky scrapers and several of the men pair off together (alas, I can't remember the title). Indeed, I think sci fi is so appealing to so many gay men and lesbians because we long for the future where we believe same-sex relationships will be no big deal.

Here is hoping BSG manages to get it right next season. But I'm warning them now--they better not pull a Lost which gave us a recent gay revelation that was breathtakingly pathetic. And it's not like BSG doesn't have stories to tell about gay people that would be fascinating. After all, this a show where humanity verges on the edge of extinction. How about an ongoing storyline where a gay character is pressured to have kids in order to repopulate the human race? BSG already did an interesting look at the issue of abortion in such a world (yet another hot button topic the show hasn't shied away from covering).

I don't want to rag too hard on the show. Who knows what's been going on behind the scenes. Perhaps series creator Ronald Moore has been battling TPTB to bring a gay character to the program and ran into the same problem as Tim Kring did with Heroes. But it is the 21st century and when practically every sitcom manages to do a gay episode, it really is time for science fiction to catch up to the present. Otherwise, what's the frakking point of it all?

BSG, hmmm

I love BSG. I have hope that Ron Moore et al. will present at least one gay character and do it well. The main reason being- it only makes sense. There is no way there would be no gay people among the fleet and crew. It also makes no sense that a show that addresses so many other current social issues would ignore this one. As for Gaeta- he is the only main character we know practically nothing about. We have never seen him in a relationship or even interested in anyone. We know nothing about his past. That is why I think he is the likely candidate.

At least there's Doctor Who ...

Very well put -- I agree that you'd expect the Science Fiction shows to be blazing the trail and breaking new ground instead of lagging behind sitcoms. But at least we have Russell T. Davies' Doctor Who and Torchwood, which brought us the bisexual Captain Jack, and just his past weekend had Shakespeare flirting with the Doctor!

Number Three

Number Three wasn't killed because she was a bisexual(which none of the other cylons knew about). She was killed because the actress got her own show and because the three's were not falling in line with the other cylons as far as finding out who the final five were. She only got boxed. She could still return in the future.

Battlestar world deals with race a lot differently than the real word deals with it in the sense that it's humans vs. cylons not white vs. black vs. hisbanic. They don't seem to have racial categories like that. People are identified by what planet they come from. It's quite possible that if and when a character comes out as gay that it's not the same thing in that world as it is in ours. After all men and women in their militiary are not separated by gender and the women hold very high ranking jobs. They have a women president for crying out loud and her gender is never talked about as a negative for having that position. It's possible that the characters just won't care that another character is gay. I mean there less than 40,000 of them still alive anyway. How many of them are possibly gay? The only issue I could see them having is with procreation due to their low numbers.

I'd love to see a gay

I'd love to see a gay character on BSG. Gaeta isn't really featured much, so I don't how I'd feel about him coming out as gay. It might seem like they just made him the gay character for lack of anything else to do with him.

I know I saw a LOT of comments wondering if Lee (Apollo) and Sam would have a fling after a recent episode (3.18 maybe) aired, in which there was lots of soulful eye gazing and staring at each others lips. Even the "non-slashers" saw the chemistry there.

Your comment about making Gaeta

is what I fear most. Just making him gay to make him gay. I wish he'd been gay from the beginning so it would just be part of him as opposed to defining him somehow. But it's a smart show. Hopefully, they'll get it right.

no hope for BSG, maybe Stargate 3...

I watched the pilot for BSG, hated it, saw no gay characters and have never watched an episode again. Now with that said one of my fav. scifi shows, Stargate, had tons and tons of subtext but no truly out there gay characters. But with the mention of a possible third Stargate franchise being thought of I hope that the Exec. who make the show finally include a gay character (human or alien) and that they finally explore this last frontier. Gaeta

Gaeta gets just as much airtime as any of the supporting characters. Gaeta has been in most of the episodes since the beginning of the show. Not a lot is really known about his background before the war but that could be said about most of the characters. Not every show has to have a gay character. I'll still watch it if it's a good show and BSG is. One of their producers is a lesbian so it's possible that if they add a gay character it will be a lesbian. Also, I remember an interview with one of the actors from the show saying what makes us think that their isn't already a gay character on the show who just hasn't been revealed yet. It might have been Sackoff or Bamber. Mary McDonnell did express interest in the show exploring homosexuality. The show covers a lot of political topics because the exec producers said that they were political science majors. I'm sure they'll get around to homosexuality eventually but it probably won't be approached the same way it is in shows that aren't scifi. Like I said their wouldn't be a big number of them because their are less than 40,000 humans still living.

Rag on BSG all you want Michael

The first season was amazing and a lot of other things in the following seasons have been too. But I stopped watching consistently after the first season because it became, for the most part, some ridiculous (straight) soap opera. I truly got fed up when they killed off Billy and completely changed the character of Dualla simply to give Apollo a girlfriend so no one would even begin to think he was gay. And then of course there is the straight-loser-boy bisexual sex fantasy that Michael mentions. I mean how LAME can you get?! And it just goes on and on. The possibilities offered by this setting... these excellent actors deserve better and so do we. I still have hope but I'm not holding my breath.

Canceled but sucky?

I have truly lost all respect for BSG. It has gone from being dramatic to shock theater. As far as I'm concerned, they could have canceled it twenty episodes ago. Face it, they are never going to bring in gay characters to american sci-fi. Not that the Sci-fi Channel knows the meaning of science fiction. Tell me, what does giant mutant aligators and Snakes from the middle of the sun have to do with pushing the boundries of known and accepted science?

not too far fetched

I remember from one of the podcasts that they have discussed Gaeta being gay. And thus, as stated in the Advocate article, they often have bloopers implying this. I don't think the subtext in the Gaeta and Baltar relationship is accidental. I just don't know if they need him to offically come out in an episode. This is a show that tries to do more "show" than "tell", and it's always read pretty clearly to me. Like said above, this culture just doesn't have the same gender divide as we do. I don't know if they'd have our issues.

Gaeta and Baltar

I am a big fan of BSG and while there are some weak episodes I still think it is one of the best shows on television. They do an excellent job analyzing and challenging gender stereotypes. I see no reason why sexuality should not be included. As for Gaeta and Baltar. I can easily see Baltar, who is a hedonist on many levels, being open to any kind of pleasurable experience. As for Felix, no one really knows why he tried to kill Gaius nor why he purjered himself at Baltars trial. He seems to have really strong feelings the origins of which have been left vague. Who knows where they will go with that story line. Gaeta has quite a fan following already so we all hope he gets much more screen time in the future.

See, it just doesn't work for me to say

that show just doesn't have the same gender issues that we do or that it does more show than tell because it seems that's really only the case for the "gay" stuff. Heck, I don't even think you can make the case that is has shown Gaeta as gay because it has been barely there. And the show hasn't shied away from showing and telling us about pretty much every other topic so there is little question about what is being discussed. It's just the gay thing that seems to get that treatment. As for it being a different culture that has different rules, this isn't a documentary. It's a show created by 21st century for 21st century folks and is meant to be commentary on today's issues. BSG is a smart, well-written show that knows what it's doing. For some reason, they are ignoring this topic and it's frustrating.

Here's an Idea...

I think they should hire Matt Lucas from Little Britain to reprise his role as Daffyd, although this time on Battlestar Galactica. He could walk around telling everybody that he's "the only gay on the Battlestar." Lt. Gaeta could blatantly come on to him, but Daffyd would get all huffy and say "No, I'M the only gay on the Battlestar."
Michael Jensen's picture

Okay, that's funny

Or how about Jack and Karen from Will & Grace. It would be a hoot to see them carrying on while the Cylons attack.

Mr Moore already commented this topic

As you can all read on the official BSG website, Mr Moore was alread asked about this topic. His answer was honest (to me): "I think homosexuality definitely exists in the world of Galactica, but I frankly haven't found a way to portray it yet. It's a texture that I'd like to introduce into the series without doing "the gay episode." It's something that gets talked about internally periodically, but so far there hasn't been a good story or character arc or scene that's seemed like a good way to establish the fact without really hanging a big neon sign out that says, "See, we're doing a gay theme now!" Ultimately, it's probably a failure of imagination on my part and a reflection of the fact that I've never made this a priority for us, so pin the blame on me for not moving this bit of reality into our universe." If you ask me: I totally understand his point.

Caprica Six and Sharon

I'm only up to season three, episode three, so forgive me for the flashback here, but I really thought we would see some female Cylon on female Cylon with Sharon and Caprica Six after they hunted down Anders in that parking structure and killed Number Three with the giant rock.

But it didn't happen.

Yes, I would certainly be interested in seeing what Ron and Dave would do with a gay storyline, but like Ron says, it needs to be an organic happenstance.

Personally, I wanna see Helo and a visitor (and I am available) in a gay storyline.

Bamber actually hinted

Bamber actually hinted there may be a gay character in one of his interviews with the Advocate awhile ago.  I'm extremely disappointed they haven't addressed this yet and Lt. Gaeta is the obvious choice since his romantic inclinations have remained largely unexplored.  A lot of fans (including me) have written the producers requesting his character be the one to come out.

Still, it's clear the fratboy geeks behind BSG are much more comfortable showing Tricia Helfer's cleavage than showing Alessandro Juliani kissing some fighter pilot.  I really hope they surprise me and do something this season, but I'm not holding my breath.

That said, the premiere was frakking fantastic.

BSG

Dude come on! They made Starbuck a woman in this series!

That alone should tell you that they wanted to be absolute in keeping even the hypothetical slash gay potential low!
