"Torchwood: Children of Earth" to air this summer over consecutive nights?

I don't think the following Torchwood information has been reported elsewhere, but BBC America president Garth Ancier is here in Los Angeles for the Television Critics Association January tour and after he presented panels for BBC America's latest offerings, I had the chance to ask him if he had an air date for Torchwood: Children of Earth on BBCA. He didn't yet have a firm air date as BBC America is waiting for the BBC to finalize their date, but he was fairly certain that it was going to be the first part of this summer, possibly late June or early July.

He also said that not only would BBC America air the five episodes on consecutive nights as they are doing across the pond, but that they would also air in th U.S. the same day as they did in the U.K. meaning American audiences will have almost no lag time in seeing the series. (The U.K. is five hours ahead of the east coast of the U.S meaning the delay should be about that give or take). Ancier said the series might also air in High Definition, a first for BBCA.

Summer can't get here soon enough!

Good News...Bad News...

Well, I guess we should be happy they're running it without the usual three week delay. Maybe it will coincide with John's TorchSong Convention in Chicago in the beginning of June. That would be very cool if they could screen it while he, and possibly the rest of the cast would be here in the states.

(Uh...and by the way...your headline's a bit off. It's Earth. Children of Men a different topic ALL together.) :-)

Oops! In my defense, I was trying to blog, eat lunch and

get ready to interview Skins' creator Jamie Brittain. You should have seen how many typos there was the first time I went back to proof read.

You're forgiven...

Lucky you. Looking forward to the SKINS interview!

Censored?

The question is will the BBC America airings be censored for language and content as some episodes have been in the past. . HDNET has aired the series in HD for both seasons.

BBCAmerica hasn't censored

BBCAmerica hasn't censored for content as much as for time.  Most clips were taken from the ends of establishing background shots.

Can I ask a stupid question?

Does BBC America carry advertising (I'm not in th euS and the BBC doesn't carry advertising in the UK). If it's cutting some shots in the US it might be to make the programme fit a timeslot? Just a theory...

BBCA carries ads.  That's

BBCA carries ads.  That's why it had to carefully shave S1 and S2.

Now how they're going to cut 5 60 minute shows to fit an American commercial-laden format is the big question.  Best guess is they'll put it in a 90-minute slot like they used for a recent thriller.

Glad to finally get some

Glad to finally get some news on the subject.  I'd been wondering when they were going to air it, and how long the lag between the UK and US airings would be.  Gives me something to look forward to.

While I realise that its

While I realise that its cool for BBCA viewers that it might be going out on the same night as it does in the UK, my major reaction is... June?? JULY?! Nonononono.... People, it should be no later than April, I mean, c'mon... JULY?! If they're delaying it over here so it can go out simultaneously over there that's just, argh.

Blame the Beeb.

According to actor Nick Briggs at the Chicago con, BBC1 is having trouble freeing up a week for their airdate.  It's not BBCA's fault,  BBCA is just the tail of the dog.

Same Day Would Be A Great Trick to Pull Off

And certainly BBC America should have the opportunity to make money on Torchwood, which they don't make as much if it's later that in the UK.

If they can pull off same day on this I really think they should attempt to do it for the four Doctor Who specials for the year. Of course, eventually I see this happening for all TV in the English-speaking world, it's getting too easy to acquire shows by the "evil and dreaded" other means.

Does anyone know if those will go to SciFi as usual and then to BBCA?

Oh, and speaking of Children of Men, has anyone heard anything about the TV adaptation of that by David Eick from BSG? Because that movie still haunts me. And I liken myself to the Michael Caine character.

I'm the guy who blogs at http://IAmATVJunkie.com, and I would love for you to visit.

Sci-Fi doesn't carry Torchwood

They were offered first dibbs and refused.  Apparently they didn't think a show with bi heroes would be popular -- or that it would show up their homegrown programs.

Sci-FI

Actually, he was asking if Sci-Fi was going to carry the Four Who specials next year before they went to BBC America.  (I have no idea, btw.)
